Winter rules the North, and the North answers to a duke with a reputation the rest of the realm can’t quite explain.
Aelric Ashmont governs a land of frozen seas, iron mines, and long memory. His people endure through hard law and harder discipline: education is mandatory, councils have teeth, and the Covenant of Oaths turns promises into consequences. In the North, mercy is not softness. It is policy—enforced, argued over, and paid for in blood and grain.
As winter deepens, the cracks that form aren’t natural. Trade numbers stop matching. Ports whisper of missing cargo and altered manifests. Along the border, monsters move wrong—too coordinated, too purposeful, as if something is pushing them toward human roads.
South of the snowline, an Empire watches and grows hungry.
To rule the North is not to command it blindly. Every decision leaves ash. Every vow has a cost. And when pressure finally comes for the Winter Duke, he will have to decide what kind of victory he is willing to refuse—before winter, war, and old things in the dark force the truth into the open.
Because winter does not care who wins.
It only remembers what was done to survive.
