Chapter 13 - Birthday and supernatural matters (5)

I wasn't even surprised by the profound, radical changes coursing through my body. I already knew from my previous two impromptu murders that the magnitude of the system's physical and mental improvements heavily depended on the caliber of the entity that killed me, as well as the sheer brutality of the death itself. Getting my heart vaporized by a five-thousand-year-old vampire king definitely qualified as a top-tier execution.

Walking out of the master bathroom, I shrugged into the dark suit we had miraculously found in Thorn's sprawling walk-in closet. I was understandably a bit uncomfortable wearing clothes that likely belonged to the very same ancient monster who had just turned my chest cavity into a bloody crater ten minutes ago. But, considering the alternative was strutting through a grand ballroom completely naked, it would just have to do for the rest of the night.

I stepped out into the adjacent sitting room and found Chloe. She was perched on the edge of a velvet sofa, staring blankly at the wall with a distant, deeply conflicted look in her glowing crimson eyes.

I cleared my throat softly. She snapped out of her daze, noticing that I was finally dressed and presentable.

As she turned her breathtaking face toward me, my upgraded brain immediately betrayed me. I instantly flashed back to our frantic, intensely passionate make-out session on the blood-soaked carpet just moments ago. I could still phantom-taste the metallic tang of blood and the sweet, intoxicating ozone of her perfume on my lips. If Thorn hadn't violently blasted us apart with a kinetic shockwave, I didn't even dare to imagine how incredibly far we would have gone right there on the floor.

Seeing me completely dazed and staring at her lips, a highly uncharacteristic, delicate blush crept onto her normally pale, porcelain cheeks. She quickly averted her gaze, suddenly looking everywhere except directly at me.

"What is it?" she asked, her usually composed voice wavering just a fraction.

"I was just wondering..." I started, rubbing the back of my neck awkwardly. "What exactly was that back there? The whole... mind-losing, aggressive carpet-rolling thing?"

Her blush deepened into a vibrant shade of pink. She interlaced her slender fingers, staring intently at her lap.

"This... I am truly sorry about that, Samsara. I completely lost control," she admitted, her tone laced with genuine embarrassment. "The mark was originally just meant to be a political tool. A way to explicitly indicate my claim over you to the other vampires in the city. It was supposed to be a simple, painless procedure: me taking a tiny sip of your blood while simultaneously leaving a fraction of my unique vampire signature on you."

She took a slow, deep breath, finally forcing herself to meet my gaze.

"But the absolute second I actually tasted your blood... it was like pure, concentrated ambrosia. It was intoxicating. I wanted more, and I simply couldn't stop myself. You have to understand, a vampire's fangs secrete a highly potent, supernatural agent. It's an evolutionary trait designed to bring intense, overwhelming sensations of pleasure to our victims, effectively making them docile and compliant during the feeding process. And the older, more powerful the vampire is, the more devastatingly potent that agent becomes. That is exactly why you completely lost your mind."

So it was basically a supernatural roofie mixed with an extreme aphrodisiac, I realized, piecing the puzzle together. But wait a minute...

"Okay, I totally understand my own sudden, overwhelming desire now," I said, a slow, cocky smirk spreading across my newly flawless face. "Your venom completely scrambled my brain. But what about you, Miss Crimson? Where exactly did your aggressive lust come from? Because last time I checked, you weren't the one getting bitten."

She immediately snapped her head away, aggressively avoiding my gaze once more. She completely ignored my teasing question, her aristocratic facade desperately trying to glue itself back together.

"We should get back to the party. Stella has been left alone down there for far too long," she stated briskly, standing up from the sofa and rapidly walking toward the suite's exit without looking back.

I watched her practically flee the room, and I couldn't help but chuckle softly to myself. You can act as cold and ancient as you want, Princess, but you definitely liked it.

Shaking those highly distracting, illicit thoughts from my head, I quickly caught up to her, and we took the VIP elevator back down to the grand reception room.

The massive ballroom was just as crowded and politically charged as we had left it. We navigated through the sea of silk and tailored suits, scanning the room for our blonde half-demon friend.

We eventually found Stella tucked away in a dimly lit, secluded corner of the room. But she wasn't alone. Well, she wasn't exactly participating, but she was entirely engrossed in a highly inappropriate spectacle occurring right next to her.

A vampire couple was having a phenomenally hard time keeping their hands to themselves. In fact, they weren't even trying. The man had his partner pinned aggressively against a marble pillar. His tongue was shoved deep down her throat, his hands firmly gripping her waist, while she had her long legs wrapped tightly around his hips, completely oblivious to the grand, elegant party happening just a few feet away.

Stella was sitting on a plush chair right next to them, watching the scandalous display with a deeply intoxicated, euphoric expression on her beautiful face. Her usually fair skin was flushed a deep, vibrant pink, and she seemed to be physically radiating a terrifying, pulsating aura of raw vitality.

Chloe let out a heavy, exasperated sigh and cleared her throat loudly to make Stella aware of our presence.

The blonde half-demon slowly turned her head, looking at us with a hazy, nonchalant smile. She reluctantly peeled herself away from the chair, leaving the heavily panting couple to their own devices, and strutted toward us.

But as she closed the distance, her vivid purple eyes began to glow with a devilish, hypnotic light.

Instantly, my newly reconstructed heart started to hammer violently against my ribs. A sudden, intense wave of heavy heat washed over my body. Beside me, Chloe let out a soft gasp, a dark blush rapidly returning to her cheeks. My thoughts began to slow down, entirely clouded by a thick, heavy fog of pure, unadulterated arousal. I could feel a very specific, highly inconvenient part of my anatomy starting to harden beneath my borrowed suit. I found myself staring at both Chloe and Stella with raw, hungry, predatory eyes.

Before things could rapidly spiral out of control and I ended up recreating the pillar scene with both of them, Chloe violently snapped out of the trance.

"Stella! Stop it! You are actively affecting us!!" Chloe commanded sharply, her melodic voice cutting through the heavy, suffocating haze of desire.

Stella blinked rapidly, her glowing purple eyes dimming back to their normal, stunning hue. The oppressive, aphrodisiac aura instantly vanished.

"Ah! I'm so sorry!" Stella apologized, looking genuinely flustered and embarrassed. "I got completely lost in the high. I didn't even notice I still had my aura turned on."

I let out a shaky breath, leaning against the nearby wall to steady my trembling legs. "What the hell was that?!" I asked, thoroughly startled as my rational mind desperately clawed its way back into the driver's seat.

"Ah, right. I haven't properly explained my powers yet," Stella said sheepishly, rubbing the back of her neck. "My specific demonic affinity is LUST. I can passively or actively make anyone around me feel intense desire and completely lose their rational minds. Which is actually incredibly handy for me, since I literally need to devour ambient lust and sexual energy to sustain myself and become more powerful. It's quite a convenient dietary requirement, really."

My jaw dropped slightly. "Wait. You mean the demonic side of your genetics... you're a literal Succubus?!"

Why the hell are the women in my life so incredibly, violently dangerous?! I lamented inwardly, burying my face in my hands. I had just been forcefully subjected to two different, highly potent mind-altering aphrodisiacs in the span of a single hour. My poor, mortal-turned-immortal heart couldn't take this level of stress.

Though, if I was being entirely honest with myself, I had to admit that I had seen significantly more 'action' tonight than in the entire seventeen years of my pathetic, miserable existence combined.

Behind us, now completely freed from Stella's heavy, amplifying aura, the vampire couple finally broke apart. They looked around in a complete daze, highly confused and visibly embarrassed about basically dry-humping in the middle of a formal banquet.

We quickly abandoned the awkward corner and made our way back to our secluded high-top table near the balcony.

Looking across the grand room, I noticed that Chloe's father had already returned to the ballroom. Thorn was standing near the main dais, effortlessly entertaining a line of elite guests and graciously receiving lavish, priceless birthday gifts, looking every bit the untouchable, ancient king. There wasn't a single trace of the brutal murderer who had just crushed my heart into pulp twenty minutes ago.

Now that her succubus-induced high had completely faded, Stella finally seemed to notice the subtle, lingering tension between Chloe and me. She narrowed her beautiful purple eyes, her gaze darting back and forth between us.

A highly mischievous, knowing smile slowly stretched across her face. "Well, well. It certainly looks like you two have been incredibly naughty while you were away," she teased in a playful, sing-song voice.

Chloe shifted uncomfortably, entirely failing to maintain her usual icy facade. Realizing that dodging the subject would only make Stella pry harder, she let out a defeated sigh and quietly recounted the horrifying details of what had actually transpired in the penthouse suite with her father.

Stella listened in absolute, stunned silence. When the story concluded, she turned to look at me, her eyes wide with a mixture of profound amazement and sheer disbelief.

"You are truly a total monster. You actually came back from that?" she asked, shaking her head in awe. "Getting your heart crushed and your blood superheated by the Vampire King himself?"

She leaned in closer, observing my face and my new physique with keen, analytical precision.

"It's true, though. You feel significantly more powerful than you did before your little 'accident' upstairs. Your magical signature is much denser," she noted, her eyes tracing my jawline. "You even became exponentially more gorgeous. I didn't think that was physically possible."

Hearing her remarks, Chloe finally allowed herself to openly observe me as well. Her crimson eyes scanned my borrowed suit and my radically upgraded features.

"I knew there was something profoundly weird about your ability," Chloe agreed softly. "It is exactly like the first time when Luke decapitated you in the alleyway. When I managed to track you down the following day, you had become noticeably stronger, taller, and faster. It seems your resurrection process actively forces an evolutionary leap."

Seeing these two beautiful, ancient predators actively dissecting my glitchy, reality-breaking system powers made me incredibly nervous. I just rubbed the back of my neck and laughed awkwardly, entirely refusing to confirm or deny their highly accurate theories.

Fortunately, the heavy, analytical atmosphere soon dissipated. With the immediate threat of death temporarily neutralized by my successful resurrection, we actually managed to spend the rest of the night genuinely enjoying ourselves. We drank expensive, centuries-old vintage wines, we danced a little, and we laughed at Stella's wicked, sarcastic commentary about the other elite guests.

Of course, we had to actively, purposefully ignore the burning, psychotic death glares being launched in our direction from across the room by a highly agitated Luke, and the cold, deeply calculating stares from his terrifying father, Atticus. But with Chloe and Stella by my side, I felt strangely untouchable.

We finally left the opulent Green Hotel just before dawn, as the grand birthday bash slowly came to an end. Stella had reluctantly departed a few minutes earlier, forced to ride back to the White estate in the same car as Luke and Atticus.

Chloe and I slipped into the cavernous backseat of her heavily armored luxury sedan, the silence between us comfortable and warm as her stoic driver navigated the quiet, pre-dawn streets of Nebula City toward my new Arkum district apartment.

When the car silently pulled up to my building, Chloe surprised me by stepping out of the vehicle and walking me directly to the front steps.

We stood there in the cool, crisp morning air, the sky above us painted in soft shades of bruised purple and pale gold.

"Thank you again for everything tonight, Samsara," she said softly, her voice melodic and entirely free of its usual icy edge. "And I am truly, deeply sorry about my father killing you."

Looking at her standing there in the soft light of dawn, the cool breeze playing with her raven-black hair, she looked breathtakingly, impossibly beautiful.

"Hey, no worries," I responded jokingly, offering a lopsided grin. "I already knew I was probably going to die at least once during the course of the evening. It's basically a Tuesday for me at this point."

We both shared a quiet, genuine laugh. The shared danger, the chaotic revelations, and the sheer absurdity of the night's events had undeniably drawn us much closer. We weren't just a fake couple fulfilling a dangerous contract anymore; there was a real, palpable connection thrumming between us.

I looked into her glowing crimson eyes, and a sudden, wild impulse raced through my mind. Usually, I would overthink it. I would hesitate. But tonight, I decided to just run with it. After all, life was entirely too short—literally, in my case.

I stepped into her personal space, gently cupping her surprised, porcelain face in my hands, and I leaned in, pressing my lips firmly against hers.

I gave her a deep, passionate kiss. I was fully bracing myself for a violent, supernatural slap that would send me flying across the street, but it never came. She was taken completely by surprise, freezing for a fraction of a second. But then, instead of pushing me away, her arms wrapped tightly around my neck. She pulled me even closer, melting against my chest, and eagerly reciprocated the kiss with a fiery, desperate intensity.

The amount of time we spent locked together on my front steps is entirely lost on me. It could have been ten seconds, or it could have been ten minutes. When we finally, reluctantly broke apart, breathless and slightly dazed, she offered me a stunning, enchanting smile that completely short-circuited my brain.

Without another word, she turned and walked back to her waiting car. I stood there, completely rooted to the spot, watching the sleek sedan pull away and disappear into the early morning traffic.

I stayed perfectly still on the pavement for a long while, simply processing the sheer magnitude of the night's events, before finally turning around and entering my luxury building.

I rode the private elevator up to my penthouse and walked straight into my bedroom, entirely exhausted. I collapsed onto the massive king-sized bed, not even bothering to take off the borrowed vampire suit.

But before I allowed myself to fall into a deep, well-deserved sleep, I pulled my cracked smartphone from my pocket. I opened my banking app, stared at the massive string of zeroes representing my newly acquired twenty-nine-billion-dollar inheritance, and then navigated to the recent transfer Chloe had sent me.

Without a single ounce of hesitation, I wired the entire $2,500,000 retainer directly back to her account. I didn't need her money anymore. More importantly, I didn't want our dynamic to be purely transactional.

I opened my messaging app and quickly typed out a text to her:

"I successfully refunded your deposit. I will still gladly help you deal with Luke and your father's political mess; it's just that I have absolutely no need for the money anymore. Plus, the party was actually pretty fun. Call me when you wake up."

I hit send, tossed the phone onto the nightstand, and let the heavy, peaceful darkness of sleep finally wash over me.
