Chapter 140 - Chapter 140: Abyssal Valley

The dark stone ground of the canyon trials slowly dissolved, fading into a swirling vortex of dense white steam. Fang Lin sat cross-legged, his breathing steady as his Peak-Solid Soul guided the lingering traces of his Nether Life Spirit Qi to repair the minor bruises on his chest.

When he opened his eyes, the Elderly Mansion Spirit was standing a few paces away. The spirit's white robe fluttered in a sudden, hot breeze that carried the sharp scent of sulfur and frost.

"You have recovered well, successor," the Mansion Spirit said, his ancient face calm. "But surviving raw weight and brute force is only the baseline. A true expert of the Core Formation must understand the clashing elements of the world and adapt their path. For your second tier, the Abyssal Valley will shift."

Fang Lin replied modestly, "Senior, you're just making me awkward. Please call me Fang Lin or Little Lin from now onwards."

The Mansion Spirit acknowledged. "Alright, if you don't mind, I shall call you Little Lin from now."

The spirit raised his hand, gesturing toward the surrounding fog. The black stone walls of the canyon began to rumble, splitting apart as glowing cracks of molten magma erupted from the bedrock. At the same time, towering glaciers of ancient blue ice rose from the volcanic fissures, clashing with the fire in a violent, explosive hiss of steam.

"This is the Burning Ice Desert," the Mansion Spirit explained. "A vault of conflicting fire and frost. The gravity remains at the ten-fold baseline, but the elemental instability will challenge your Qi circulation. I will maintain the five-fold time dilation. Go. Let us see how your frost path survives the heat."

The spirit vanished into a swirl of steam.

Fang Lin stood up, his standard steel sword held firmly in his right hand. The air around him was a chaotic, turbulent sea of extremes. To his left, volcanic heat radiated from bubbling magma pools, the air warping with intense thermal distortion. To his right, massive walls of ancient glacier ice radiated a freezing, quiet Yin-frost. The collision of these two forces filled the vault with a thick, heavy mist of hot steam that made normal breathing impossible.

Within his spiritual sea, the Dark Flame Spirit yawned, stretching her tiny crimson limbs inside the Ancient Spatial Furnace.

"Ooh, this place smells nice and warm!" she giggled. "Lots of fire energy here. It's almost like a proper forge! But Loud-Boy, that cold ice of yours is going to melt fast in this heat. You look like a drop of water on a hot iron pan."

"It is not about keeping the ice from melting," Fang Lin thought, his eyes narrowing as he surveyed the clashing landscape. "It is about understanding the boundary between the two."

Fang Lin spent four to five months adapting to the conditions of the clashing vault, forcing his meridians to endure the constant, rapid transition between the volcanic heat and the glacial cold. The ten-fold gravity pressed down on his Netherskin, while the clashing elements hammered against his Qi circulation like an anvil. During these months of intense training, he did not rush to break through, keeping his realm firmly locked at the Peak Middle Spirit Foundation while he focused entirely on mastering the temperature gradients around him.

The mist in front of him began to condense, forming three massive figures. They were Molten-Ice Sentinels, constructs whose bodies were forged from volcanic stone wrapped in layers of ancient glacier ice. Their chests glowed with a chaotic mixture of red fire runes and blue frost runes, and their arms ended in heavy stone cannons.

With deep, rumbling growls, the sentinels raised their arms. A volley of explosive fire-frost projectiles erupted from their cannons, streaking through the steam toward him.

Under the ten-fold gravity, Fang Lin could not leap away. He closed his eyes, using his Peak-Solid Soul's divine sense to map the thermal changes in the air. The incoming projectiles created sharp, burning signatures against the cold background of the glaciers.

He executed the Moonless Shadow Step.

His figure vanished from the path of the explosions, appearing ten feet to the side. As the projectiles struck the ground behind him, they detonated in a violent clash of fire and ice, sending shards of hot stone and freezing sleet flying through the air.

Fang Lin rushed forward, his sword tracing a line of frost using the Frost Trace Sword Art.

But as his blade approached the nearest sentinel, the intense heat radiating from the volcanic stone melted the frost before the strike could land. The sword struck the stone-bark armor with a dull, metallic clang, leaving only a shallow scrape. The sentinel backhanded him, the heavy impact forcing Fang Lin to slide back, his feet cracking the volcanic stone.

"The heat is too strong," Fang Lin thought, his chest heaving. "My frost Qi cannot pierce their defense if it melts before impact. I must change the timing."

He did not strike again immediately. Instead, he stood still, watching as the three sentinels gathered to surround him. They fired another volley, the heat warping the air.

Fang Lin focused his soul perception, sensing the exact boundary where the sentinel's volcanic body met the glacier ice wrapped around its limbs. The stone was scorching hot, while the ice was freezing cold.

He executed the Moonless Shadow Step, sliding past a sentinel's sweeping arm. As he did, he did not release his frost Qi. Instead, he waited until his sword was inches away from the sentinel's heated stone chest.

At the moment of impact, he released his coldest frost Qi, channeling it through the True Dark Bud in his spiritual sea.

*CRACK!*

The sudden, extreme drop in temperature caused the volcanic stone to contract violently. The thermal shock was too intense for the golem's structure; the stone-bark chest fractured, web-like cracks spreading rapidly across its body. With a final strike of his sword, Fang Lin shattered the sentinel into a pile of cold gravel.

"I see," Fang Lin muttered, a cold light flashing in his eyes. "By manipulating the temperature gradients—striking the hottest zones with the deepest cold—I can shatter their defense from within."

The remaining two sentinels rushed him, but Fang Lin was already moving. He used the Moonless Shadow Step to slide through their attacks, timing his strikes perfectly to exploit the temperature differences. Within minutes, the remaining sentinels crumbled into heaps of cracked volcanic stone.

The steam in the vault suddenly began to hiss, rising in thick, turbulent currents as a pack of simulated beasts emerged from the glacial fissures.

They were Flame-Winged Frost Serpents, their long, scaled bodies formed from ancient ice, while their wings were composed of flickering, orange flames. They glided through the hot winds and steam currents with terrifying speed, their movements silent and unpredictable.

Two serpents dived from the ceiling, their jaws open as they sprayed a mixture of fire-frost venom downward.

Fang Lin's Netherskin bore the ten-fold gravity as he rolled to the side. The venom struck the ground, melting the stone and freezing the edges in an instant. The serpents glided back into the steam, vanishing from sight.

"They are using the steam currents to hide," Fang Lin thought, his divine sense extending in a tight circle.

He could feel the hot wind currents moving around him. The serpents were gliding along the boundaries where the hot volcanic air met the cold glacial drafts, using the thermal transitions to mask their speed.

"If they use the boundaries to move, I will destroy the boundaries," he muttered.

Fang Lin stood in the center of the steam. As three serpents dived toward him from different directions, he did not use his sword to block. Instead, he gathered his frost Qi and suddenly released it into the hot steam surrounding him.

The sudden injection of extreme cold into the superheated steam triggered a violent, rapid thermal contraction and expansion.

*BOOM!*

A series of powerful steam explosions erupted in the air around him, the pressure waves blowing the mist apart. The sudden blast of expanding air threw the serpents off balance, their flame wings flickering and tearing under the thermal shock.

With their flight disrupted, the serpents fell toward the ground. Fang Lin moved like a silent breeze, executing the Moonless Shadow Step to close the distance. His sword flared with a dark, light-devouring void as he executed the Moon-Eating Shadow Blade. The blade sliced through their icy bodies, the dark energy dissolving their fire wings and leaving them to shatter on the stone floor.

"That was clever, Loud-Boy!" the Dark Flame Spirit giggled in his mind. "Using the hot air to make your own explosions. You are starting to understand how to play with fire!"

"It is simple physics," Fang Lin mentally replied, though his breathing was ragged. His Qi reserves were down by half, and the constant thermal shock was putting a massive strain on his meridians.

-

The volcanic fissures in the desert suddenly erupted, towering geysers of lava shooting forty feet into the air. At the same time, the ancient glaciers began to slide, grinding against each other with a sound like thunder.

The gravity in the vault surged once more, reaching a crushing fifteen-fold weight. Fang Lin's body was forced downward, his muscles screaming under the pressure as he struggled to stand. He circulated his Nine Nether Phantom Body, his skin taking on a deep obsidian sheen as he forced his bones to bear the load.

From the collision of lava and ice, a colossal figure rose.

It was the Lava-Frost Behemoth. Its left half was composed of bubbling, molten magma, while its right half was formed from solid, ancient glacier ice. It stood over twenty-five feet tall, its massive form radiating a terrifying pressure that warped the space around it.

The behemoth roared, its voice a mixture of hissing steam and grinding stone. It stepped forward, its giant magma fist raising to strike.

Fang Lin's sword strikes would be useless against the magma half, as the heat would melt the blade, while the glacier half was immune to ordinary cold attacks.

"I must alternate my path," Fang Lin realized.

As the giant magma fist descended, Fang Lin executed the Moonless Shadow Step, sliding toward the behemoth's right side. The heavy gravity pressed on him, but his Netherskin held.

He leaped toward the behemoth's glacier leg. He did not use frost Qi. Instead, he channeled his physical raw force and the Black Mountain Suppression Art.

He executed the Black Mountain Breaking Palm.

His palm struck the solid glacier ice. The impact, combined with the suppressive gravitational force, sent a massive shockwave through the ice. The glacier leg cracked, giant shards of blue ice breaking off as the behemoth stumbled.

The behemoth swung its left magma arm, a sweep of liquid fire that threatened to incinerate him.

Fang Lin did not retreat. He landed on his feet, using the Guard Dragon Breath to stabilize his stance. As the liquid fire approached, he gathered his deepest frost Qi and thrust his hand forward, executing a concentrated blast of freezing energy directly against the magma sweep.

The sudden collision of extreme frost and molten magma created a massive thermal contraction.

*SHATTER!*

The magma arm froze into solid, brittle obsidian rock and immediately shattered under the weight of its own momentum, chunks of black stone splattering across the floor.

The behemoth roared in pain, its stone core glowing frantically as it tried to reform its magma limb.

Fang Lin did not give it the chance. He retrieved the Night Burial Sword from his ring, the dark void of the blade humming as he channeled his remaining Qi.

He executed the Moon-Eating Shadow Blade.

He lunged forward, striking the boundary line where the magma and glacier halves met on the behemoth's chest. The dark void blade carved through the clashing elemental boundary, dissolving the core that held the two halves together.

With a final, deafening crack, the Lava-Frost Behemoth fractured down the center and collapsed, its magma half hardening into black stone while its glacier half shattered into harmless snow.

Fang Lin fell to his knees, the Night Burial Sword planting into the cracked volcanic stone to support his weight. The gravity returned to the baseline ten-fold pressure, but his Qi was completely exhausted, and his body was covered in steam burns and frostbite.

Within his spiritual sea, the grey seed hummed, its sprout mark glowing with a warm, steady light that began to soothe his burning meridians and repair his tissues.

The voice of the Elderly Mansion Spirit echoed through the dissolving steam.

"The second phase is complete, Little Lin. You have learned to manipulate the temperature gradients of the world. You have three days to recover before the final tier begins."

Fang Lin sat cross-legged, closing his eyes as he entered a deep state of cultivation, his control over his Frost Qi and physical body forever transformed by the clashing vault.
