The only reason humans were able to develop to their current technological level is due to how short their lives are. If it weren't for the fact that any knowledge not passed down would disappear within a mere ~40 years, there wouldn't be such a large need to pass it on. Also, they don't have to time to just "figure it out." Most of them also lack the mental capability and would die before then.
