Graceful degradation is one of my favorite design philosophies. Think of a robot that is already 80% destroyed but is still dragging its body along to complete it's task. When dealing with extreme environments and situations, a few extra seconds could save numerous live.
(If you send a robot into a reactor during a meltdown, it will die)
