Helio King never thought of himself as special. Average grades when he tried, slacker when he didn't, top 30 only because half the class treated algebra like a foreign language. Graduation night should have been forgettable.
It wasn't.
The air-conditioning bit at his face as Principal Smith called his name. He walked the stage, took the diploma, absorbed her quiet "you'll do great things," and sat back down already checked out. Ceremony over. Hugs. Goodbyes. Then the walk home through the usual alleys.
Second alley. Sketchy group. One pale, model-handsome man standing in the only sliver of light.
"Hey dickhead! Still wanna act tough?"
The stranger muttered, almost to himself, "I need to do laundry today anyway."
The next second the men were in pieces. Limbs, gore, and blood painted the brick. The stranger stood in the middle of it, not a drop on him.
Helio froze. Heart hammering. Terror so thick it felt like something crawling under his skin.
The thing turned.
"Human. Die willingly or die screaming. Either way you aren't surviving."
Helio begged. Screamed. Anything to buy a second.
"You're too loud. Shush."
Lips sealed. Body locked. Blood moving like worms in his veins.
A hand punched through his chest.
"Human, just die. I have a party to attend."
Then the bite.
Blood reversed direction, vacuumed toward a single point. Lifeforce ripping out of him in pulses. The stranger smiled like he'd found a rare vintage.
"What extravagant blood you have."
Every second stretched. Helio's last coherent thought was rage: I didn't deserve this. If I live, nothing stops me.
His eyes closed.

Helio's consciousness slammed back into a body that should have been a corpse. The hole in his chest was closing with a wet, unnatural itch. The alley was empty except for cooling blood and the lingering scent of the thing that had walked away.
A translucent window hovered in the corner of his vision, impossible to ignore.

Somewhere in the dark, something that was not quite a shadow laughed without sound.
Helio pushed himself up on shaking arms. Diploma still in his jacket pocket. Blood still on his shirt. The System window pulsed once, waiting.
He looked at the empty alley where the vampire had vanished and whispered the only thing that made sense anymore.
"I'm not done."
The System answered with a single line of text.
