The King forced a smile, though it trembled at the edges.
"Perhaps… we will die today," he said quietly. "To think that the Everlasting Kingdom would fall during my reign."
His fingers tightened around the ancient device. It was the kingdom's final safeguard, the last resort meant to cleanse the land entirely, even at the cost of everything upon it. The ancestors had left grave warnings about the calamity, etched in blood and fear. He had believed himself prepared.
Reality proved him wrong.
