Chapter 105 - The Thing Beneath Remus

Chapter 105 — The Thing Beneath Remus

The darkness beneath the rising water moved.

Brook stood between Sera and the black pool.

His sword remained raised.

Above them, the water hung against the ceiling like a second ocean.

Drops drifted upward.

Stone fragments rose from the floor.

Nothing was falling anymore.

Everything was being pulled toward the darkness.

Hades stared into it.

For the first time since Brook had met him—

the King of Remus looked uncertain.

"What is that?" Henry asked.

Nobody answered.

The pale creature smiled.

Brook turned toward it.

"You knew."

"Of course."

"What is it?"

The creature's black eyes moved toward the darkness.

"A consequence."

Brook's expression hardened.

"Wrong answer."

He moved.

Not with Michael.

Not this time.

Brook ran.

The creature lifted one hand.

"Still."

Brook's body locked.

One foot stopped inches above the ground.

His sword froze halfway through its swing.

The creature stepped toward him.

"You rely too much on power."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

Lucifer laughed inside his mind.

He's irritating.

"Helpful."

I didn't say I was helping.

The creature leaned closer.

"Your Hell Source is impatient."

Brook's fingers twitched.

"Get away from me."

The creature smiled.

"Kneel."

The pressure hit.

Brook's legs buckled.

The stone beneath his knees cracked.

Henry took a step forward.

"Brook!"

"Stay back!" Hades snapped.

Henry froze.

Hades's eyes were fixed on the creature.

His hand slowly rose.

A word appeared above his palm.

SEVER.

The creature's head turned.

Hades spoke.

"Sever."

The command struck the air.

The invisible pressure around Brook split apart.

Brook inhaled sharply and rolled forward.

The creature moved to strike him—

Brook teleported.

He vanished.

The creature's hand cut through empty air.

Brook reappeared behind it.

This time he didn't swing his sword.

His fist drove into the creature's ribs.

The impact folded its body.

Brook grabbed the back of its head and slammed it into the stone floor.

Once.

The creature tried to speak.

Brook struck it again.

Twice.

Its mouth opened.

Brook drove his elbow across its face.

The creature rolled away.

Brook followed.

Lucifer's presence pressed closer.

The anger in Brook's chest became something sharper.

Something eager.

The creature rose.

Brook was already there.

A low kick struck its knee.

It dropped.

Brook spun and drove his heel into its chest.

The creature crashed into one of the pillars.

Stone broke.

Lucifer laughed.

Yes.

Brook stopped.

His breathing was heavier now.

He looked down at his hand.

Dark veins had begun crawling across his wrist.

Hades noticed.

"Control yourself."

Brook clenched his fist.

"I am."

Lucifer whispered.

Mostly.

Brook closed his eyes for half a second.

The veins slowly faded.

When he opened them—

the creature was gone.

Henry looked around.

"Where did it go?"

Crowley raised his weapon.

"Above."

Everyone looked up.

The creature clung to the ceiling beside the suspended water.

It smiled.

Then pointed downward.

The darkness moved.

A sound came from beneath the chamber.

Deep.

Slow.

A heartbeat.

Once.

The entire palace shook.

Twice.

Cracks spread across the floor.

Henry looked at Hades.

"Tell me that's normal."

"It isn't."

"Great."

Brook activated Death.

Lifelines appeared around him.

Henry.

Sera.

Crowley.

Hades.

The creature.

Then—

thousands.

Brook froze.

Lines spread beneath the floor.

Not from one creature.

From the entire city.

Every lifeline in Remus.

Brook could feel them.

Not just see them.

Children sleeping above.

Soldiers standing along bridges.

Merchants.

Families.

Creatures.

Thousands of lives.

And beneath them all—

something else.

A lifeline so vast that Brook couldn't see where it began or ended.

Pain hit him.

He stumbled.

Sera grabbed his arm.

"Brook!"

"Don't touch me."

She pulled back.

Brook pressed a hand against his head.

The lifelines were screaming.

Not with sound.

With pressure.

Death appeared beside him.

Brook looked at him.

"What am I seeing?"

Death's face remained expressionless.

The connection.

"Between what?"

Death looked downward.

The sanctuary and what sleeps beneath it.

Brook stared at the floor.

"Remus is alive?"

Death shook his head.

No.

A pause.

But it is connected to something alive.

The heartbeat came again.

The pale creature whispered:

"Open."

The darkness below the floor answered.

Brook's head snapped upward.

The black book on the platform began turning its pages.

Sera stared at it.

"Hades."

The King had already moved.

"Do not read anything."

"I wasn't going to."

"Good."

A page stopped.

One word appeared.

Sera's eyes widened.

Brook immediately saw it.

The word was simple.

RETURN.

The pale creature's smile disappeared.

For the first time—

it looked afraid.

Hades noticed.

Brook noticed too.

"What does it mean?" Brook asked.

Hades didn't answer.

The word changed.

RETURN.

The creature dropped from the ceiling.

It landed awkwardly.

"No."

Brook looked at it.

"That's the first useful thing you've said."

The creature turned toward the book.

"Close it."

Hades's expression hardened.

"You want me to close it?"

"Yes."

"Why?"

The creature stared at him.

"Because it wasn't supposed to remember."

Sera frowned.

"Who?"

The creature looked toward the darkness.

"Remus."

The heartbeat stopped.

Everything became quiet.

Brook slowly turned toward Hades.

"Explain."

Hades remained still.

Brook stepped closer.

"Now."

Hades looked at him.

For several seconds, nobody spoke.

Then the King walked toward the edge of the pool.

His voice was quieter.

"Remus has existed longer than the city."

Henry frowned.

"What does that mean?"

"The city was built around it."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"Around what?"

Hades looked into the darkness.

"The first foundation."

Crowley went pale.

Brook noticed immediately.

"Crowley."

Crowley didn't answer.

The pale creature laughed.

"Of course he knows."

Hades looked toward Crowley.

"You've seen it."

Brook turned.

"You've been down here before?"

Crowley's jaw tightened.

"Yes."

Henry stared.

"You really have a habit of leaving out important information."

Crowley ignored him.

Brook took another step.

"What is the first foundation?"

Crowley finally looked at him.

"Something Aldric was searching for."

Brook's expression changed.

"King Aldric knew."

Hades answered before Crowley could.

"Not everything."

The King placed his hand against the stone.

"But enough."

Symbols began appearing beneath his fingers.

A map.

Not of Remus.

The entire world.

Brook saw twelve points.

Each one connected.

Shinokuni-01.

Remus.

Ten others.

Lines ran between them.

Then Brook noticed something.

All twelve lines descended.

Downward.

Toward one place.

Something beneath the map.

Something hidden.

Brook felt his stomach tighten.

"That's what Elias is looking for."

Crowley nodded slowly.

"Probably."

The pale creature laughed.

"No."

Everyone looked at it.

It pointed at the map.

"Elias is looking for the door."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"And the Maker?"

The creature's smile disappeared.

"The Maker is looking for the house."

A voice echoed through the chamber.

Not from the darkness.

Not from the creature.

A man's voice.

Calm.

Cold.

Amused.

"A poetic description."

Brook froze.

The pale creature looked around.

"Who said that?"

Hades raised his hand.

"Reveal."

Nothing happened.

The voice laughed softly.

"Word Magic is fascinating."

Hades's expression darkened.

"You."

Brook looked at him.

"Who is it?"

Hades didn't answer.

The voice continued.

"King Hades."

Brook felt Michael become tense.

Lucifer stopped smiling.

Death turned his head.

Brook whispered:

"Azael."

The voice answered immediately.

"Brook."

Brook's grip tightened around his sword.

The voice sounded almost pleased.

"We've been expecting you."

Henry looked around.

"Where is he?"

"Not there."

Crowley raised his weapon anyway.

Brook looked toward the darkness.

"Then why are you talking to us?"

Azael paused.

"Because Elias is impatient."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"What does that mean?"

"He wanted to come himself."

The pale creature suddenly backed away.

Azael's voice changed slightly.

"But I told him no."

The creature whispered:

"No."

Brook looked at it.

"What?"

It stared at the darkness.

"He knows."

Hades's eyes narrowed.

Azael continued.

"The thing beneath Remus has remembered itself."

Brook felt a chill move down his spine.

Sera looked toward the floor.

"Can it hear us?"

"Of course."

The heartbeat returned.

One.

The suspended water trembled.

Two.

The walls cracked.

Three.

The darkness opened.

Not eyes.

A door.

A vertical line of darkness appeared beneath the water.

It slowly widened.

Brook stared.

On the other side—

something moved.

Not a creature.

A place.

For a brief moment, Brook saw a landscape through the opening.

A black sky.

A dead forest.

A mountain shaped like a broken crown.

Then it vanished.

The door slammed shut.

The chamber went silent.

Henry whispered:

"What the hell was that?"

Lucifer finally spoke.

Not Hell.

Brook looked inward.

"Then where?"

Lucifer's expression had completely changed.

For the first time, Brook had seen genuine fear in him.

Somewhere I was told never to go.

Brook stared.

The pale creature began laughing.

Quietly at first.

Then louder.

Hades turned toward it.

"What is so funny?"

The creature looked at Brook.

Then toward the closed door.

"You think you've found another sanctuary."

Brook's expression hardened.

"We did."

The creature shook its head.

"No."

It smiled.

"You found the road."

The entire chamber went dark.

And from somewhere far beneath Remus—

something began walking toward them.
