Chapter 111 — Borrowed Face
Crowley didn't move.
The man standing between the shelves smiled at him.
"Hello, old friend."
Mercer.
The same face.
The same voice.
The same tired smile Crowley remembered from years ago.
For one second—
Crowley forgot.
Then his hand tightened around his weapon.
"You're dead."
Mercer's smile remained.
"That's how you remember me?"
Crowley's eyes narrowed.
"I watched you die."
"No."
The man's expression softened.
"You watched yourself leave."
Crowley raised his weapon.
"Who are you?"
Mercer tilted his head.
Crowley noticed it.
Something about the movement.
Too smooth.
Too slow.
The man smiled.
"You really don't recognize me?"
Crowley's jaw tightened.
"Mercer would never ask me that."
The smile disappeared.
Only for a moment.
Then it returned.
Different.
Wider.
Crowley's grip tightened.
The man's face changed.
Not completely.
A ripple moved beneath his skin.
Like something turning underneath wet cloth.
Crowley stepped back.
"You're not him."
The creature laughed.
"No."
Its voice was still Mercer's.
"But you wanted me to be."
Crowley attacked.
He crossed the distance in a single movement.
His blade cut through the creature's chest.
Mercer looked down.
There was no blood.
The wound opened.
Darkness moved inside it.
Then the wound closed.
Crowley jumped back.
The creature touched its chest.
"That was rude."
"Show yourself."
The creature smiled.
"Why?"
Its face began moving.
The skin shifted.
Mercer's features stretched.
The eyes changed.
The mouth disappeared.
Then reappeared.
Higher.
The creature's body twisted.
Crowley raised his weapon.
For the first time in years—
he had no idea what he was looking at.
The creature's skin continued moving.
Then—
Mercer's face returned.
Crowley's stomach tightened.
"Stop."
"Why?"
Crowley stepped forward.
"Stop wearing his face."
The creature smiled.
"Make me."
The bookshelves shook.
Crowley attacked again.
This time he didn't aim for the creature's chest.
He went for its legs.
The creature jumped backward.
Too far.
Its body bent unnaturally as it landed against the shelf.
Books fell around it.
Crowley followed.
His blade came down.
The creature caught it.
With one hand.
Crowley's eyes widened.
The creature looked at him.
"You were faster when he died."
Crowley's face changed.
The creature pushed.
Crowley was thrown across the archive.
He crashed through a table.
Wood splintered.
The creature walked toward him.
Mercer's boots touched the floor.
Crowley stared at them.
Even the boots were right.
The creature had copied everything.
"Why are you here?"
Crowley asked.
Mercer stopped.
"To see you."
"No."
Crowley pushed himself up.
"Why are you really here?"
The creature smiled.
"Because the door opened."
Crowley's expression changed.
"The thirteenth symbol."
The creature nodded.
"Things are moving again."
"What things?"
The creature's smile slowly faded.
"You'll see."
Crowley attacked again.
This time, the creature didn't fight him.
It moved.
Crowley swung.
Missed.
Mercer stepped behind him.
Crowley turned—
And stopped.
Mercer's face was gone.
Kael stood before him.
Crowley's blade froze.
The creature smiled with Kael's mouth.
Crowley's face hardened.
"Wrong person."
The creature tilted its head.
Crowley swung.
The blade cut through its shoulder.
The creature stumbled.
Its body changed again.
A woman.
An old man.
A soldier.
Then—
Crowley himself.
Crowley stopped.
The copy smiled.
"That one hurt."
Crowley stared at himself.
The copy had his face.
His voice.
His scars.
"You think you're different from me?"
Crowley raised his weapon.
"I'm not a parasite."
The copy laughed.
"No."
Its expression became cold.
"You're worse."
Crowley's jaw tightened.
The creature stepped closer.
"You borrow faces too."
Crowley attacked.
The creature ducked.
"Kings."
Crowley swung again.
"Soldiers."
The creature moved.
"Friends."
Crowley stopped.
The creature stood behind him.
Its voice became Mercer's again.
"You even borrowed his death."
Crowley's breath caught.
Outside the archives—
Henry stopped walking.
The captain beside him looked over.
"What?"
Henry frowned.
"Did you hear that?"
The captain listened.
Nothing.
Henry looked toward the palace.
"Someone's fighting."
The captain's hand moved toward her weapon.
"Where?"
Henry looked back.
"Archives."
The captain frowned.
"Nobody is supposed to be there."
Henry immediately started walking.
The captain grabbed his shoulder.
"You were told to stay here."
Henry looked at her.
"Someone is in trouble."
"There are thousands of people in trouble."
Henry looked toward the civilians.
Then toward the palace.
His face tightened.
He remembered the boy asking him if he was scared.
Because I can still be scared while helping.
Henry looked at the captain.
"Keep them moving."
"What?"
Henry began walking.
"Brook isn't here."
The captain stared at him.
"Henry."
He looked back.
"Then somebody has to go."
And he ran.
Crowley crashed into another shelf.
The creature stood over him.
This time wearing Mercer again.
Crowley looked up.
"You weren't there."
Mercer smiled.
"What?"
"When I left."
Crowley's breathing slowed.
"You weren't laughing."
The creature's smile disappeared.
Crowley stared at it.
"You were angry."
The creature said nothing.
Crowley pushed himself to his feet.
"You called me a coward."
The creature's eyes narrowed.
Crowley continued.
"You told me not to listen to Aldric."
His grip tightened.
"You told me to help you."
The creature stepped backward.
Crowley saw it.
The hesitation.
The uncertainty.
"You don't remember him."
The creature's face shifted.
Crowley smiled.
"No."
He raised his weapon.
"You remember me."
The creature's body changed.
The false Mercer disappeared.
Crowley himself returned.
Then another face.
Then another.
Trying to find one that would stop him.
Crowley walked forward.
"You don't know who Mercer was."
The creature screamed.
Its face became distorted.
Crowley raised his blade.
"But I do."
He struck.
The creature caught the blade.
Its arm split open.
Black fluid spilled across the floor.
For the first time—
it was bleeding.
Crowley stared.
The creature screamed again.
Its body expanded.
Limbs stretched.
Its spine bent.
The archive became too small for it.
Crowley jumped backward.
The thing stood.
Tall.
Thin.
Its skin constantly shifting.
Faces appeared across its body.
Some screaming.
Some laughing.
Some crying.
Crowley saw Mercer again.
Then Kael.
Then strangers.
Then—
Aldric.
Crowley froze.
Aldric's face looked directly at him.
The creature smiled.
"Do you miss him too?"
Crowley closed his eyes.
"No."
The creature stopped.
Crowley opened them.
"I hate that I do."
For the first time—
the creature didn't know what to say.
Henry burst through the archive doors.
"Crowley!"
The creature turned.
Crowley shouted:
"Don't!"
Too late.
The creature's body folded inward.
Its skin moved.
Henry stopped.
Brook stood in front of him.
Henry froze.
"Brook?"
Crowley stepped forward.
"That's not him!"
The false Brook looked at Henry.
"Henry."
The voice was perfect.
Henry's hand shook.
Brook took a step forward.
"Get away from Crowley."
Henry didn't move.
Crowley raised his weapon.
"Henry!"
The false Brook's expression hardened.
"He's lying."
Henry looked between them.
Crowley.
Brook.
He didn't know what to do.
Then Henry remembered.
The creature had no lifeline.
But Henry couldn't see lifelines.
He needed something else.
Brook walked toward him.
"Come on."
Henry stared at him.
Then smiled.
The creature frowned.
"What?"
Henry pointed at him.
"Brook would never say that."
The creature's face changed.
Crowley stared.
Henry stepped backward.
"He's terrible at comforting people."
Crowley almost laughed.
The false Brook smiled.
"That's your proof?"
Henry's hand moved toward his weapon.
"No."
He looked toward Crowley.
"That's just enough."
The creature lunged.
Henry fired.
The blast hit the creature's shoulder.
It barely slowed.
Henry jumped aside.
The creature slammed into a bookshelf.
Crowley attacked from the side.
His blade cut across its back.
The creature turned—
And became Henry.
Crowley's weapon stopped inches from Henry's throat.
The real Henry stared.
"Oh, that's annoying."
The creature kicked Crowley.
Crowley flew backward.
Henry moved.
He attacked his copy.
The copy dodged.
Henry's movements were identical.
The real Henry frowned.
"Okay, that one I don't like."
The creature copied his stance.
Henry smiled.
"Good luck."
They attacked.
Not elegant.
Not cinematic.
Henry punched the copy.
The copy punched him back.
Henry staggered.
The creature moved exactly as he did.
Henry threw another punch.
Blocked.
A kick.
Blocked.
The creature grabbed him.
Henry headbutted it.
The creature didn't expect that.
Henry noticed.
"Oh."
He smiled.
"You copy what I remember."
The creature's face shifted.
Henry elbowed it.
Hard.
The creature stumbled.
Henry grabbed a book from the floor.
And slammed it into its face.
Crowley stared.
Henry looked at him.
"What?"
Crowley raised his weapon.
"Nothing."
The creature suddenly stopped fighting.
Its body went still.
Every face disappeared.
Mercer's face returned.
Crowley froze.
Henry immediately stepped between them.
"No."
Mercer looked at Crowley.
"I forgave you."
Crowley's expression changed.
Henry looked back at him.
"Don't."
Mercer smiled.
"I never blamed you."
Crowley didn't move.
The creature stepped forward.
Henry raised his weapon.
"Don't come closer."
Mercer ignored him.
"Crowley."
Crowley looked at him.
The creature smiled softly.
"Come home."
Crowley's breathing stopped.
Henry looked at him.
"Crowley."
Crowley lowered his weapon.
Henry's eyes widened.
"Crowley!"
The creature reached toward him.
Crowley stepped forward.
Then stopped.
Mercer smiled.
Crowley looked at him.
"You're wrong."
The creature's smile faded.
Crowley raised his weapon.
"Mercer never called Shinokuni home."
The creature's face twisted.
Crowley stepped forward.
"He hated it."
The creature screamed.
Crowley struck.
His blade cut through its throat.
The creature fell.
Its body hit the floor.
Still.
Henry stood beside Crowley.
Both breathing heavily.
Henry looked at the corpse.
"Is it dead?"
Crowley stared.
"No."
Henry looked at him.
"How do you know?"
Crowley pointed.
The body was changing.
Slowly.
Mercer's face disappeared.
Then—
the creature smiled.
Its throat was still open.
But it spoke.
And the voice wasn't Mercer.
It wasn't Brook.
It wasn't Crowley.
It was something neither of them recognized.
"Thank you."
Henry frowned.
"For what?"
The creature's smile widened.
"For showing me who you are."
Crowley's expression changed.
The creature continued.
"Now I can find you again."
Its body collapsed.
Not into blood.
Not into flesh.
Into a thin black liquid that moved between the cracks in the floor.
Henry stepped back.
"Where did it go?"
Crowley stared at the floor.
"It didn't die."
Henry looked at him.
"What was that thing?"
Crowley remained silent.
For once—
it wasn't because he was hiding something.
He genuinely didn't know.
Then a word appeared across the floor.
Sera's Word Magic.
No.
This wasn't Sera.
The letters carved themselves through the stone.
BORROWED.
Henry stared.
Crowley looked toward the word.
Then another appeared.
FOUND.
The two men looked at each other.
Henry whispered:
"Brook needs to see this."
Crowley nodded.
For the first time—
they agreed without arguing.
Outside—
the words across Remus began disappearing.
One by one.
But beneath the palace—
something else was still moving.
