Chapter 171 — The Long Silence
Brook screamed.
Then—
silence.
Henry's hand tightened around his.
"Brook?"
No response.
Brook's body lay motionless.
The cuts across his skin had stopped appearing.
For several seconds, no one spoke.
Shoyo kept both hands above Brook's chest, healing light flowing steadily from her palms.
Sera remained beside her, her own magic moving carefully over Brook's body.
Crowley stood nearby.
Rick watched the trees.
Everyone was waiting.
For Brook to wake.
For something to happen.
For an answer.
Nothing came.
Henry looked at Sera.
"Is he okay?"
Sera didn't immediately answer.
Henry's face hardened.
"Sera."
She finally looked at him.
"He's alive."
Henry waited.
"But?"
Sera looked back at Brook.
"I don't know what is happening inside him."
Shoyo's healing light flickered.
Henry immediately noticed.
"What happened?"
Shoyo frowned.
Her hands remained above Brook.
"My magic…"
The light strengthened again.
Then weakened.
She looked confused.
"It isn't reaching him."
Henry stared.
"What does that mean?"
Shoyo looked toward Sera.
Sera placed her hand against Brook's chest.
Her expression slowly changed.
"He isn't rejecting the healing."
Henry's eyes narrowed.
"Then what?"
Sera looked at Brook.
"His body doesn't need healing."
Crowley spoke from behind them.
"That's supposed to be good, isn't it?"
Sera shook her head.
"No."
Henry looked down.
Brook's body had stopped bleeding.
The cuts had closed.
But Brook hadn't moved.
Hadn't opened his eyes.
Hadn't reacted.
He looked peaceful.
Too peaceful.
Sera continued.
"His body is healing itself."
Henry stared.
"Then wake him up."
Silence.
Henry looked back at her.
"Wake him up."
Shoyo slowly lowered her hands.
"I can't."
Henry's expression changed.
"What do you mean you can't?"
Shoyo looked at Brook.
"I've healed him."
Henry waited.
"He's still unconscious."
Sera added quietly:
"Whatever is keeping him asleep isn't physical."
Henry looked down at Brook.
Then squeezed his hand.
"Then what is it?"
No one answered.
They moved before night.
There was no point remaining where they were.
The aftermath of the fight with Azael still hung over everything.
Destroyed trees.
Scorched earth.
Broken stone.
The world itself looked wounded.
Brook was carried carefully.
At first Henry insisted on carrying him.
Crowley eventually forced him to stop.
"You're going to collapse."
Henry glared at him.
"I can carry him."
Crowley stared back.
"I know."
Henry remained silent.
Crowley adjusted Brook's weight.
"But you can't carry him forever."
Henry looked away.
No one argued after that.
They found shelter inside the remains of an abandoned structure.
It wasn't much.
Half of the roof was gone.
The walls were cracked.
But it was enough.
Brook was placed against the far wall.
Henry immediately sat beside him.
Shoyo and Sera began discussing spells.
Quietly.
Crowley listened.
Rick remained near the entrance.
Shoyo looked toward Sera.
"If we combine our magic…"
"It might help."
Henry looked up.
"Then do it."
Sera shook her head.
"It could also make things worse."
Henry stood.
"You said you didn't know."
"I don't."
"Then why aren't we trying?"
Sera looked at him.
"Because magic isn't something you simply throw at someone until it works."
Henry stepped forward.
"That's Brook."
The room became silent.
Henry looked at all of them.
"He saved us."
No one responded.
Henry's voice became quieter.
"And now he's dying somewhere we can't even reach."
Shoyo stood.
"He isn't dying."
Henry looked toward her.
Shoyo continued.
"I would know."
Henry looked back at Brook.
"Then what is he doing?"
Shoyo didn't answer.
Henry slowly sat down again.
The Ectoplasm around his arm moved.
Henry didn't notice.
Not immediately.
Night came.
Brook didn't wake.
The others slept in turns.
Rick stayed awake first.
Then Crowley.
Then Sera.
Henry never slept.
He sat beside Brook.
Watching him.
Waiting.
At some point—
the Ectoplasm moved.
Henry felt it.
His head snapped downward.
The black substance had stretched from his arm.
Slowly.
Quietly.
It moved across the ground.
Henry stared.
"What are you doing?"
The Ectoplasm stopped.
Then continued.
It reached Brook.
Henry immediately grabbed it.
The substance froze.
Henry's eyes narrowed.
"No."
The Ectoplasm pulled.
Not away.
Forward.
Toward Brook.
Henry slowly released his grip.
The black substance moved toward Brook's hand.
It stopped inches above his skin.
Henry watched.
Nothing happened.
The Ectoplasm remained there.
Still.
Henry reached toward it.
The moment his fingers touched it—
images entered his mind.
Brook.
Not clearly.
Pain.
Darkness.
Fire.
A blade.
Then—
Henry pulled his hand away.
The Ectoplasm returned to his arm.
Henry stood.
His breathing was fast.
"What the hell?"
Brook remained unconscious.
Henry looked down at the Ectoplasm.
It moved slightly.
Henry whispered:
"You felt him."
The Ectoplasm became still.
Henry stared.
Then looked at Brook.
Something was happening.
Not just to Brook.
To all of them.
The next day—
Brook remained unconscious.
They began moving again.
Slowly.
Carefully.
Henry walked beside Crowley as they carried Brook.
Shoyo and Sera stayed close.
Rick moved ahead.
Henry kept watching the Ectoplasm.
It had changed.
He was sure of it.
It moved more smoothly now.
It reacted faster.
When Henry stepped over broken ground, the Ectoplasm stretched against the stone and steadied him.
Henry stopped.
Crowley looked back.
"What?"
Henry stared at his arm.
The Ectoplasm slowly returned.
"I didn't tell it to do that."
Crowley frowned.
"What?"
Henry looked at him.
"The Ectoplasm."
Crowley looked at his arm.
"Okay?"
Henry shook his head.
"I didn't move it."
Crowley stared at him for a moment.
Then looked ahead again.
"Maybe you're getting better at controlling it."
Henry looked back down.
"No."
The Ectoplasm moved.
Henry watched it.
"It moved before I did."
That night—
they were attacked.
Not by an Abomination.
Something smaller.
Faster.
A creature from the forest.
Henry didn't see it until Rick shouted.
"MOVE!"
Henry turned.
The creature came through the trees.
The Ectoplasm moved first.
A black wall appeared in front of Henry.
The creature struck it.
Henry fell backward.
The Ectoplasm wrapped around the creature.
Henry hadn't commanded it.
The creature struggled.
Henry stared.
"Stop."
The Ectoplasm stopped.
Henry slowly raised his hand.
The creature fell.
Then ran into the darkness.
Henry remained where he was.
Crowley stared at him.
"You did that."
Henry shook his head.
"No."
Crowley looked at the Ectoplasm.
"Then what did?"
Henry didn't answer.
Because he didn't know.
Days passed.
Brook remained unconscious.
The cuts stopped appearing.
His breathing remained steady.
His body healed.
But he never woke.
The group kept moving.
They avoided populated areas.
Avoided the larger Abominations.
Avoided anything that could slow them down.
They needed somewhere safe.
Somewhere they could keep Brook alive.
Henry grew quieter.
But the Ectoplasm grew.
It began extending farther from him.
At first, only several feet.
Then ten.
Then farther.
Henry tested it.
He could form blades.
Shields.
Arms.
But now—
the shapes remained after he stopped concentrating.
That scared him.
Crowley noticed.
"It's changing."
Henry nodded.
"I know."
"You sure that's a good thing?"
Henry looked at Brook.
"No."
The Ectoplasm moved.
Henry continued.
"But I don't think I have a choice."
One evening—
Henry stood outside their shelter.
The sky was dark.
Brook was inside.
The others were resting.
Henry raised his hand.
The Ectoplasm moved.
It formed a blade.
Henry lowered his hand.
The blade remained.
Henry stared.
Slowly—
the Ectoplasm changed shape.
The blade became a hand.
Then an arm.
Then nothing recognizable.
Henry's breathing slowed.
"Who are you?"
The Ectoplasm stopped.
Henry laughed quietly.
"Yeah."
He shook his head.
"Stupid question."
The black substance moved.
It wrapped around his hand.
Henry stared at it.
For the first time—
he didn't see a weapon.
He saw something growing beside him.
Something learning.
Just as he was.
Henry looked through the darkness.
Then back toward where Brook was resting.
"I don't know how long this is going to take."
The Ectoplasm remained around his hand.
Henry continued.
"But when he wakes up…"
He stopped.
The Ectoplasm moved.
Henry smiled slightly.
"Yeah."
It was different.
Stronger.
But more than that—
it felt familiar.
Like it had been with him the entire time.
Growing.
Waiting.
Learning.
Far away—
inside Brook's mind—
the second crystal burned crimson.
Brook ran toward it.
Michael's sword came down.
Lucifer's Hell Flame followed.
Death's Scythe moved.
Brook disappeared.
The fight continued.
Outside—
Henry opened his eyes.
He looked at the Ectoplasm.
Then at the sleeping group.
Brook had not woken.
And Henry had changed.
Even if no one else understood it yet.
Henry stood.
The Ectoplasm moved with him.
Not behind him.
Not as a weapon.
Beside him.
