Chapter 182 — The Queen of Asteria
The moment Xcution passed beneath the stone marker—
Silvet stopped walking.
Miles away, far beyond the road leading into Asteria, he stood inside a dark room.
He had been reading.
A book rested open in his hands.
But his eyes were no longer on the page.
Silvet slowly closed it.
Someone had arrived.
His head tilted slightly.
For a moment, he simply listened.
Not with his ears.
The world had a rhythm.
Movement.
Life.
Death.
Power.
Silvet could feel changes in that rhythm.
And now—
something familiar had crossed into Asteria.
A smile appeared on his face.
"Xcution."
He said the name quietly.
As if greeting an old friend.
He walked toward the window.
In the distance, the lights of Asteria could be seen.
Brook had arrived.
Henry.
Sera.
Crowley.
Rick.
Shoyo.
Silvet knew their names.
Of course he did.
He knew more than that.
He knew things about them that some of them had never told anyone.
He knew what Sera feared.
He knew what Henry had seen inside the Ectoplasm.
He knew the promises Rick had broken.
The prayers Shoyo had never spoken aloud.
And Brook—
Silvet smiled.
Brook was different.
He was becoming increasingly difficult to predict.
That was interesting.
Silvet placed one hand against the window.
"The world continues."
Then he turned away.
He didn't leave.
Not yet.
He had been waiting for them.
Now that they were here—
he could continue waiting.
Xcution entered Asteria cautiously.
Brook immediately noticed the difference.
The Shinokuni wasn't like Shinokuni-01.
Its walls were newer.
Not untouched.
But newer.
Massive stone structures surrounded the settlement, reinforced with metal and sections of material Brook couldn't immediately identify.
People moved through the streets.
Merchants.
Workers.
Watchmen.
Children.
Normal life.
Almost.
Brook had learned that normal was usually a lie.
He walked beside Sera.
"Feels strange."
Sera nodded.
"New place."
"That's not what I mean."
She looked toward him.
Brook watched the people.
"They're not scared."
Sera remained quiet.
Brook understood what he meant.
Shinokuni-01 had been rebuilt after destruction.
The fear remained in the people.
Asteria was different.
There was hope here.
Not the desperate hope of people trying to survive.
Something else.
People here believed tomorrow would happen.
Brook wasn't sure if that made them lucky.
Or vulnerable.
A group of guards approached.
Everyone in Xcution immediately slowed.
Rick's hand moved toward his weapon.
Shoyo glanced toward him.
"Don't."
"I wasn't going to."
"You were."
Rick looked offended.
Brook smiled.
The guards stopped several feet away.
Their armor was unfamiliar.
The symbol of a star had been engraved across their chests.
One stepped forward.
"You entered through the eastern road."
Crowley looked at him.
"Congratulations."
Sera immediately sighed.
The guard ignored him.
"State your names."
Brook glanced toward the others.
Crowley stepped forward.
"Crowley."
The guard stared.
Crowley smiled.
"Brook."
The guard immediately looked toward him.
Brook frowned.
"What?"
The guard slowly looked down at a document in his hand.
Then back up.
"Brook."
Brook's expression changed.
"You already knew."
The guard didn't answer.
Rick's hand tightened.
Brook looked toward Crowley.
Crowley looked serious now.
The guard continued.
"Queen Hebe is expecting you."
Silence.
Brook stared.
"Expecting us?"
The guard nodded.
"Follow."
Crowley didn't move.
Brook looked toward him.
"What?"
Crowley's eyes remained on the guards.
"Nothing."
Brook narrowed his eyes.
"You've never been here."
Crowley looked at him.
"Correct."
"And yet they know who I am."
Crowley smiled.
"Welcome to Asteria."
Brook sighed.
"I hate you sometimes."
Crowley began walking.
"Get in line."
They followed the guards.
Asteria became more impressive the deeper they entered.
The streets were wide.
Buildings had been built around ancient stone structures.
Some parts of the Shinokuni looked newly constructed.
Others looked ancient enough to have existed before the walls.
Brook noticed symbols carved into the stone.
Stars.
Eyes.
Hands.
Shapes he didn't recognize.
Shoyo stopped briefly.
Brook noticed.
"What?"
Shoyo touched one of the symbols.
"Old."
Crowley raised an eyebrow.
"That your expert opinion?"
Shoyo looked at him.
"Yes."
Crowley smiled.
Brook continued walking.
But something about the symbols bothered him.
He had seen something similar.
Not here.
Somewhere else.
A dream.
The white world.
The crystals.
Brook stopped.
Henry noticed.
"You okay?"
Brook looked toward the wall.
The symbol seemed familiar.
Then—
it wasn't.
Brook shook his head.
"Yeah."
They continued.
The palace sat near the center of Asteria.
Brook wasn't sure if palace was the right word.
It wasn't extravagant.
It wasn't covered in gold.
It wasn't built to impress.
It looked like a fortress.
Stone walls.
Tall towers.
Large windows.
The guards opened the gates.
Crowley stared upward.
Brook noticed.
"You really never came here?"
Crowley shook his head.
"No."
Brook looked toward the palace.
"Why?"
Crowley was silent.
Then—
"Hell has records."
Brook looked at him.
Crowley continued.
"Names."
"Places."
"Things that shouldn't exist."
Sera frowned.
"And Asteria?"
Crowley looked toward the fortress.
"Asteria is mentioned."
Brook waited.
"But?"
Crowley's expression became serious.
"Never clearly."
They entered.
Queen Hebe was waiting.
She sat on a raised stone platform at the far end of the room.
No massive throne.
No unnecessary guards.
Only a chair made from polished dark stone.
She looked young.
That was Brook's first thought.
Too young to be Queen.
Then she looked at him.
Brook immediately changed his mind.
Her eyes had seen things.
The kind of things age couldn't measure.
Queen Hebe stood.
"Brook."
Brook stared.
She knew his name too.
"Queen Hebe."
She smiled.
"You know who I am."
Brook glanced toward the guards.
"You have an advantage."
Hebe laughed quietly.
Crowley stepped forward.
The Queen looked toward him.
Her expression changed.
"Crowley."
Crowley smiled.
"Never actually been here."
Hebe nodded.
"I know."
Crowley paused.
Brook noticed.
For once—
Crowley had nothing to say.
Hebe looked toward the rest of the group.
"Sera."
Sera nodded.
"Henry."
Henry raised his hand slightly.
Charon remained hidden.
"Rick."
Rick nodded.
"Shoyo."
Shoyo smiled politely.
Then Hebe looked back toward Brook.
"Xcution."
Brook frowned.
"You know us."
Hebe returned to her seat.
"Asteria knows many things."
Crowley immediately looked at her.
Brook noticed.
"That's vague."
"Yes."
Brook sighed.
He was beginning to hate that answer.
They spoke.
Not about Silvet.
Not immediately.
Brook asked about Asteria.
Hebe answered.
The Shinokuni had grown quickly.
Faster than most.
People from destroyed settlements had arrived.
Survivors.
Families.
Former soldiers.
People searching for a place that hadn't yet fallen apart.
Asteria welcomed them.
Brook listened.
"And now?"
Hebe looked toward the window.
"Now people are afraid."
Brook frowned.
"Why?"
Hebe looked back.
"You arrived."
Silence.
Brook stared.
Sera looked toward the Queen.
Hebe smiled.
"Not because of you."
Brook waited.
"Entirely."
Crowley stepped forward.
"What happened?"
Hebe's expression changed.
"For months, people have been dreaming."
Brook immediately went still.
Dreaming.
Hebe continued.
"Different people."
"Different ages."
"Different lives."
Crowley narrowed his eyes.
"But the dreams…"
The Queen looked toward him.
"…are the same."
Silence.
Brook looked toward Sera.
Sera's expression had hardened.
"What dreams?"
Hebe looked toward Brook.
"A new world."
Nobody spoke.
Brook remembered the voice from his own dream.
Three weeks.
Hebe continued.
"Some see the walls falling."
Rick frowned.
"Abominations?"
"No."
Hebe's voice was calm.
"Something worse."
Brook's eyes narrowed.
"What?"
Hebe didn't answer immediately.
Then—
"A future nobody understands."
Crowley looked toward the Queen.
"And why bring us here?"
Hebe smiled.
"I didn't."
Crowley froze.
Brook looked toward him.
"What?"
Hebe continued.
"You chose to come."
Brook stared.
Crowley stepped closer.
"But you expected us."
"Yes."
"How?"
The Queen looked toward Brook.
Then the room became quiet.
Too quiet.
Hebe's eyes remained on him.
"Because someone told me you would."
Brook's expression changed.
"Who?"
Hebe didn't answer.
Brook immediately understood.
"Silvet."
The name changed the room.
The guards stiffened.
Henry looked toward Brook.
Sera stepped slightly closer.
Crowley's face became cold.
Hebe slowly nodded.
Brook stared.
"He came here."
"No."
Brook frowned.
"What?"
Queen Hebe leaned forward.
"He sent nothing."
Brook waited.
"Then how?"
Hebe looked toward him.
"That is the problem."
Silence.
The Queen's expression hardened.
"Someone has been watching Asteria."
Crowley looked toward the windows.
Brook could see the concern in his face.
"Silvet."
Crowley whispered.
Hebe nodded.
"I have heard that name."
Brook looked toward her.
"From who?"
The Queen slowly leaned back.
"That is another problem."
Outside the palace—
someone walked through the streets.
Nobody noticed him.
Not because he was invisible.
People simply looked away.
Their eyes moved.
Their minds decided he wasn't important.
Silvet walked beneath the stars engraved across Asteria's buildings.
He stopped.
The air changed.
His eyes slowly moved toward the palace.
He could feel them inside.
Xcution.
All together.
Silvet smiled.
He had sensed them the moment they arrived.
Now—
he could feel something else.
A faint presence.
A thread.
A future.
Not clear.
Not yet.
Silvet looked toward the palace.
"The Book."
He whispered.
His smile disappeared.
He had searched for it for years.
A person.
Somewhere.
Someone who dreamed tomorrow.
Silvet closed his eyes.
For once—
he didn't know who he was looking for.
That was why Asteria mattered.
Because somewhere inside this Shinokuni—
the future was dreaming.
Silvet opened his eyes.
And continued walking.
Inside the palace—
Brook suddenly stopped breathing.
Not because something attacked him.
Because Death moved.
The presence inside him shifted.
Brook's hand immediately went to his chest.
Henry noticed.
"Brook?"
Brook didn't answer.
He could feel something.
Not Death's power.
Something Death was reacting to.
A lifeline.
No.
Many.
Brook looked toward the ceiling.
For one second—
he saw them.
Thousands of threads.
Connected.
Moving through Asteria.
Then—
one thread appeared differently.
Bright.
Impossible to ignore.
Brook stood.
Everyone looked toward him.
"What?"
Sera asked.
Brook slowly looked toward the Queen.
"There is someone here."
Hebe stared.
Brook shook his head.
"Not Silvet."
Crowley's expression changed.
Brook could feel the lifeline.
It was close.
But he couldn't see who it belonged to.
Then—
the vision disappeared.
Brook lowered his hand.
Silence.
Queen Hebe watched him carefully.
"What did you see?"
Brook looked toward her.
He didn't know.
But somewhere in Asteria—
someone was dreaming.
And Brook had just felt the future breathe.
