Chapter 203 - The Sky Opens

Chapter 203 — The Sky Opens

The first sign was the wind.

It stopped.

Not slowed.

Stopped.

Every leaf in Asteria froze in place.

Clothes hanging from balconies stopped moving.

Smoke from chimneys rose into the air and remained there, perfectly still.

Even the birds disappeared.

Brook noticed before anyone else.

He was standing outside the palace with Tala when the world suddenly became motionless.

His eyes moved across the city.

"What happened?"

Tala didn't answer.

She was looking upward.

Brook followed her gaze.

The sky was blue.

Clear.

Peaceful.

Nothing unusual.

Then the fourth mark on his arm began to burn.

Brook grabbed it.

Tala immediately stepped backward.

"Brook."

"What?"

"Don't move."

Brook looked at her.

There was something in her expression he'd never seen before.

Fear.

Not caution.

Not concern.

Fear.

Brook slowly looked upward again.

"What is it?"

Tala didn't answer.

The Earth beneath them trembled.

Once.

A deep vibration passed through the entire city.

Stone cracked beneath Brook's feet.

The fourth mark brightened.

Tala placed her palm against the ground.

Her eyes widened.

"No."

Brook looked at her.

"What?"

"The Earth is pulling away."

Brook frowned.

"From what?"

Tala looked toward the sky.

"Something is coming."

Inside the palace, Hutena suddenly dropped the cup in her hand.

It shattered against the floor.

Sera turned immediately.

"Hutena?"

Hutena didn't answer.

She was staring through the window.

Henry looked at her.

"What happened?"

Hutena's breathing became shallow.

"I can't see."

Sera approached her.

"Can't see what?"

"The future."

Henry frowned.

"Again?"

Hutena shook her head.

"No."

Her voice trembled.

"This is different."

She pressed a hand against her forehead.

"I can see everything."

Sera stared.

"Everything?"

"Everything except…"

Hutena looked toward the window.

"…what is above us."

A shadow passed across the sunlight.

Henry looked up.

Nothing.

Then Charon suddenly crawled out from behind Henry's shoulder.

The ectoplasm formed a face.

Its expression was unlike anything Henry had seen from it before.

Afraid.

Henry whispered:

"Charon?"

Charon pointed upward.

"Bad."

Sera looked toward the ceiling.

"What do you feel?"

Charon slowly formed one word.

"Sky."

The bells of Asteria began ringing.

One.

Then another.

Then all of them.

The sound erupted across the city.

People poured into the streets.

Guards abandoned their posts to look upward.

Children pointed.

Merchants left their stalls.

Nobody understood what they were seeing.

Because there was nothing to see.

Yet everyone could feel it.

Something was above them.

Something enormous.

Something approaching.

Brook stepped into the palace courtyard.

Crowley was already there.

He looked up.

For once—

he wasn't smiling.

Sera joined them.

Henry came running behind her.

Tala stood several feet away.

Hutena followed slowly.

Brook looked around.

"What is everyone waiting for?"

Crowley answered without looking away from the sky.

"I don't know."

Brook frowned.

"You feel it?"

"Everyone feels it."

Crowley paused.

"But I know what it isn't."

Brook looked at him.

"Hell?"

Crowley nodded.

"It isn't Hell."

His expression darkened.

"Whatever that is…"

He looked upward.

"…it's coming from above."

The clouds began moving.

Slowly at first.

They gathered over Asteria.

One cloud.

Then another.

Then hundreds.

The blue sky disappeared beneath a massive formation of white and gray.

Thunder rolled.

But there was no lightning.

The sound was too deep.

Too distant.

Almost like something enormous moving behind the clouds.

Brook's fourth mark burned harder.

He dropped to one knee.

"Ah!"

Sera immediately moved toward him.

"Brook!"

Tala raised her hand.

"Don't touch him."

Sera stopped.

"What?"

Tala stared at Brook.

"The Earth is reacting to him."

Brook gritted his teeth.

"What is it doing?"

Tala's voice was quiet.

"Trying to hold you down."

Brook looked at her.

"Why?"

She looked upward.

"Because something is trying to pull you upward."

The pain intensified.

Brook's fingers dug into the stone.

The Earth beneath him cracked.

Roots erupted from the ground.

They wrapped around his legs.

Not attacking him.

Holding him.

Brook stared.

"Tala."

"I know."

"Make it stop."

"I can't."

"Why?"

"Because it isn't me."

The roots tightened.

Brook could barely move.

His fourth mark blazed.

Then—

the sky split.

There was no explosion.

No thunder.

No dramatic burst of light.

The sky simply opened.

A perfect line appeared across the clouds.

It stretched from one horizon to the other.

Brook stared.

Sera forgot to breathe.

Henry stepped backward.

Crowley's eyes narrowed.

Tala looked genuinely terrified.

Hutena fell to her knees.

The line widened.

Light appeared behind it.

Not sunlight.

Something purer.

Whiter.

Brighter.

The clouds began peeling apart.

The opening expanded.

The city below was illuminated.

Every shadow disappeared.

Every wall became white.

Every person in Asteria looked upward.

Then—

something appeared within the opening.

A silhouette.

Two enormous wings.

Then four.

Then six.

They unfolded slowly.

The wings were vast enough to fill the opening in the sky.

Feathers drifted downward.

They didn't fall like normal feathers.

They floated.

Slowly.

Almost peacefully.

One landed in the street.

A guard reached toward it.

The moment his fingers touched the feather—

he pulled his hand away.

It was warm.

Not burning.

Warm like sunlight.

The guard stared at it.

"What…"

He couldn't finish.

The silhouette began descending.

Brook stared.

His fourth mark suddenly went completely dark.

Then—

something shifted inside him.

Michael.

Not a voice.

Not a word.

Just presence.

Sharper than it had been moments ago.

Brook froze.

He felt Lucifer too.

Silent.

Aware.

Death remained farther away.

Watching.

Brook looked toward the descending figure.

His heart began beating faster.

He didn't understand why.

But something inside him did.

Something recognized what was coming.

The figure descended through the opening.

His wings remained spread.

The light surrounding him began fading.

His clothes became visible.

White.

Simple.

Elegant.

No armor.

No crown.

No weapon.

He didn't seem to need any of them.

His face appeared.

Young.

Calm.

Almost impossibly perfect.

Yet there was warmth there.

Something strangely human in the way he looked down at the frightened people rather than through them.

His eyes moved across Asteria.

The damaged buildings.

The guards.

The palace.

Sera.

Henry.

Charon.

Crowley.

Tala.

Hutena.

Then—

Brook.

Everything seemed to stop again.

The figure remained suspended above the city.

Brook stared upward.

Neither spoke.

The stranger slowly descended.

His feet touched the ground.

No impact.

No explosion.

Nothing.

He simply landed.

His six wings folded behind him.

The light dimmed.

The sky remained open above him.

Brook could finally see him clearly.

There was something familiar about his face.

Not physically.

Something deeper.

Like seeing a stranger who somehow belonged in a memory Brook couldn't remember having.

Brook tightened his grip.

"Who are you?"

The man looked at him.

For a moment, he said nothing.

Then his eyes moved toward Brook's arm.

The fourth mark was gone.

But the man stared at the place where it had been.

His expression changed.

Not shock.

Not yet.

Recognition mixed with uncertainty.

"So it really is you."

Brook frowned.

"What does that mean?"

The man smiled faintly.

"Nothing I should explain here."

Crowley stepped forward.

"Oh, that's reassuring."

The stranger turned toward him.

His smile widened.

"And you're Crowley."

Crowley's expression immediately changed.

"You know me."

"Yes."

"How?"

The man didn't answer.

Crowley narrowed his eyes.

"I don't like people who know my name before I introduce myself."

The stranger's smile remained.

"I know."

Henry leaned toward Sera.

"That's definitely going to piss him off."

Sera kept her eyes on the stranger.

"He already is."

Charon had disappeared behind Henry.

Henry glanced down.

"Charon?"

Two small eyes appeared from behind his leg.

"No."

Henry frowned.

"No what?"

Charon pointed toward the stranger.

"No."

The stranger noticed.

For a second, amusement touched his face.

He didn't approach.

Then he looked at Brook again.

One step.

That was all he took.

The Earth beneath his foot cracked.

Tala moved immediately.

Stone erupted between them.

The stranger stopped.

Tala stood in front of Brook.

"Don't."

The warmth in the stranger's expression remained.

"You're the Vessel."

Tala's face hardened.

"And you're Heaven."

"Part of it."

"That's enough."

The stranger looked down at the stone separating them.

"I didn't come to fight you."

"I know."

That answer seemed to interest him.

"Then why are you afraid?"

Tala didn't hesitate.

"Because the Earth doesn't know what you are."

Silence.

The stranger looked at her differently after that.

Not insulted.

Curious.

Then he glanced toward Brook.

"But something in him does."

Brook frowned.

"I don't know you."

The stranger's eyes returned to him.

"I didn't say you did."

Brook felt the distinction immediately.

Something in him.

Not Brook himself.

His Sources.

The realization hardened his expression.

"Why are you here?"

The stranger was silent for a moment.

Then:

"Someone went quiet."

Brook's breathing slowed.

He already knew the name.

"Michael."

The stranger looked directly at him.

"Yes."

One word.

That was all.

But Brook felt Michael's presence sharpen again.

No voice followed it.

No explanation.

Only awareness.

Lucifer remained equally silent.

Death watched from farther away.

Brook's fourth mark reappeared.

The stranger's eyes dropped toward it.

This time—

the warmth disappeared from his face.

He stared.

Brook noticed immediately.

"What?"

No answer.

The stranger took half a step forward.

Tala's stone barrier rose higher.

He stopped.

His eyes never left the mark.

"That…"

Brook looked at his arm.

"What about it?"

The stranger's expression became unreadable.

"You have something I wasn't expecting."

Tala immediately looked toward him.

"You know about the Source?"

The stranger glanced at her.

"I know enough to know that mark shouldn't look like that."

Brook clenched his fist.

"Everyone keeps saying that."

The stranger almost smiled again.

"I imagine that has become frustrating."

"You have no idea."

"I might."

Hutena screamed.

The sound cut through the courtyard.

Sera turned just in time to catch her.

"Hutena!"

Hutena's eyes were open.

But she wasn't seeing Asteria anymore.

The future flooded through her.

She saw the courtyard.

Brook.

The stranger.

Six wings.

Then—

another image.

Michael.

Not inside Brook.

Somewhere else.

A sword in his hand.

The image shattered.

Lucifer appeared.

Fire consumed everything around him.

That shattered too.

Then Death.

Standing alone.

Always alone.

The vision changed again.

Brook appeared.

His fourth mark burned.

The Earth opened beneath him.

The stranger reached toward him.

Then Brook vanished.

Hutena gasped.

"No."

Sera held her.

"What do you see?"

"I lost him."

"Brook?"

Hutena searched desperately through futures that were disappearing faster than she could understand them.

Brook was there.

Then gone.

There.

Gone.

There—

gone.

Entire paths were collapsing.

Others appeared in their place.

She saw six people standing together.

Then five.

Then three.

Then one.

She saw a sword.

She saw wings.

She saw blood covering Brook's hands.

She saw the Earth split.

She saw—

nothing.

The future became white.

Hutena screamed again.

The stranger turned toward her.

Their eyes met.

And for one impossible instant—

Hutena saw him clearly.

Not his face.

His place.

His importance.

A point around which thousands of futures were bending.

Then that disappeared too.

Hutena collapsed against Sera.

"The future…"

Brook stepped toward her.

"What?"

Hutena looked at him.

"It broke."

The stranger's expression became serious.

He studied Hutena.

Not recognition.

Not knowledge.

Curiosity.

Hutena noticed.

She looked away immediately.

Crowley noticed that too.

He moved subtly between them.

The stranger glanced toward him.

Crowley smiled.

It wasn't friendly.

"You came for Michael."

"Yes."

"Then keep your attention on Michael."

The stranger looked at him for several seconds.

Then nodded.

"Fair."

That response caught Crowley off guard more than an argument would have.

He said nothing.

The stranger returned his attention to Brook.

Above them, the opening in the sky widened.

Tala inhaled sharply.

The Earth recoiled.

Brook felt it this time.

Not merely movement.

Rejection.

Roots beneath Asteria pulled deeper underground.

Plants bent away from the courtyard.

The stone beneath the stranger's feet fractured outward without him doing anything.

Tala looked horrified.

"Stop."

The stranger looked at her.

"I'm not doing that."

"I know."

That was worse.

Brook looked between them.

"What is happening?"

Tala's voice lowered.

"The Earth doesn't want him here."

The stranger looked upward.

The light pouring through the sky intensified.

"And Heaven hasn't completely let me go yet."

Brook frowned.

"You're causing this just by standing here?"

"Apparently."

Crowley sighed.

"Wonderful."

The stranger smiled slightly.

"I've had warmer welcomes."

"Go back."

"Not that warm."

Despite himself, Henry laughed.

Everyone looked at him.

Henry immediately stopped.

"Sorry."

The stranger smiled at him.

Henry looked away.

"Don't make him likable," Crowley muttered.

Henry whispered back, "I'm not doing anything."

Brook's fourth mark suddenly burned.

Hard.

He doubled over.

The Earth erupted.

Roots broke through the courtyard.

Stone rose.

The ground beneath Brook's feet pushed upward while the pressure from the open sky pulled against him.

For one terrifying second, Brook felt caught between two forces.

Earth below.

Heaven above.

Neither felt willing to release him.

"Brook!"

Sera moved.

Tala grabbed her arm.

"No!"

Brook dropped to both knees.

His veins burned.

The fourth mark spread farther across his arm.

Not completing.

Growing.

The stranger's expression changed.

He stepped forward.

Tala raised both hands.

The entire courtyard lifted.

"Don't touch him!"

The stranger stopped.

His wings opened.

Not threateningly.

Instinctively.

The pressure became enormous.

Crowley summoned Hellfire.

The flames appeared—

and immediately bent away from the stranger.

Crowley stared at them.

"Oh, I really don't like you."

The stranger looked at the fire.

Then Crowley.

"I noticed."

Brook forced himself upright.

"Enough."

Nobody moved.

Brook looked at Tala first.

"Put it down."

"Heaven is pulling at your Source."

"I know."

"You don't know what it can do."

"Neither do you."

Tala froze.

Brook turned toward Crowley.

"You too."

Crowley's Hellfire disappeared.

Then Brook looked at the stranger.

"And you."

The stranger folded his wings.

The pressure eased.

Brook breathed heavily.

The Earth slowly lowered.

The roots remained around his feet.

Not restraining him anymore.

Protecting him.

Brook looked down.

Then toward the stranger.

"You came for Michael."

"Yes."

"Why?"

The stranger's expression softened.

"Because he is my brother."

Brook stared.

There it was.

The word.

Brother.

Not Source.

Not angel.

Not power.

Brother.

Something shifted inside Brook again.

Michael.

Lucifer.

Both awake.

Both silent.

Death—

apart.

Brook noticed that difference now.

He didn't understand it.

But he felt it.

Three presences.

Yet the stranger's words had only caused two to react.

Brook looked at him carefully.

"You said Michael."

"Yes."

"But something else reacted too."

For the first time, the stranger's smile changed.

It became personal.

Almost nostalgic.

"I know."

Brook's eyes narrowed.

"Lucifer."

The stranger didn't answer.

He didn't need to.

Crowley's expression changed at the name.

Tala looked between Brook and the stranger.

Sera tightened her grip around Hutena.

Henry stood perfectly still.

Even Charon peeked out again.

The stranger looked at Brook as if waiting for something.

Brook hated that.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"You're staring."

"I've waited a long time."

"For what?"

The stranger looked toward Brook's chest.

"For this."

Brook's fourth mark pulsed.

Once.

The Earth answered.

A deep tremor moved beneath Asteria.

At the same moment, the opening above them released a wave of light.

Earth and Heaven collided around Brook.

His vision flashed white.

For one instant—

the courtyard disappeared.

Brook saw darkness.

Michael standing within it.

Lucifer nearby.

Death farther away.

No one spoke.

Then Asteria returned.

Brook staggered.

The stranger watched him carefully.

Brook looked at him.

"What did you do?"

"Nothing."

"Stop saying that."

A quiet laugh escaped the stranger.

"I really didn't."

Brook's jaw tightened.

The stranger's expression softened again.

"That's why I'm concerned."

Hutena slowly stood.

Sera kept one arm around her.

Hutena looked at Brook.

Then the stranger.

Then the sky.

"I can see again."

Everyone turned toward her.

Brook stepped closer.

"What?"

"The future."

Her breathing was still uneven.

"But…"

She stopped.

"What?"

Hutena stared at the stranger.

"I can see everything around this moment."

The stranger's expression became curious.

Hutena continued.

"Before you arrived, there were thousands of paths."

Her eyes shifted toward Brook.

"Now there is one."

Brook frowned.

"One future?"

"No."

Hutena shook her head.

"One moment."

"What moment?"

Hutena's face paled.

"I don't know."

Brook stared.

"How can you see it and not know?"

"Because I can't hear it."

Silence.

Hutena looked toward the stranger.

"But I can see all of you standing here."

Brook.

The stranger.

Tala.

Sera.

Crowley.

Henry.

Charon.

Then—

Hutena's gaze became distant.

"And something inside Brook wakes."

Brook's expression changed.

The stranger's smile disappeared.

For the first time since landing—

he looked completely serious.

Brook felt it too.

Michael.

Lucifer.

Not speaking.

Waiting.

The stranger looked directly at Brook.

Brook stared back.

Neither needed to say anything yet.

The pressure in the courtyard changed.

The fourth mark burned.

The Earth beneath Brook remained tense.

The sky above Asteria stayed open.

Hutena's future narrowed toward the moment she couldn't hear.

Tala watched Heaven like it might tear the Earth apart.

Crowley stood ready to burn something he already knew Hellfire might not stop.

Sera held Hutena upright.

Henry felt Charon wrap tightly around his ankle.

Death watched from the deepest part of Brook's mind.

And the two others—

Michael and Lucifer—

were finally awake.

Still silent.

Still waiting.

The stranger took one final step toward Brook.

This time, Tala didn't stop him.

Brook didn't move.

The distance between them disappeared.

Something ancient recognized something familiar.

The Earth trembled beneath them.

The open sky blazed above.

And the moment Hutena had seen but could not hear—

was about to begin.
