Chapter 222 — Brothers
Brook dreamed of fire.
Not the fire of Hell.
Not the burning cities he had seen outside the Walls.
Not the pale, impossible flame that sometimes appeared when Lucifer's presence stirred inside him.
This fire was warmer.
Older.
It filled an endless horizon without consuming anything.
There was no ground beneath Brook's feet.
No sky above him.
Only darkness and distant light.
He stood alone.
For several seconds, he simply listened.
Nothing.
Then—
"You're awake."
Brook turned.
Michael stood several dozen feet away.
The Archangel's presence was different from before.
Not weaker.
Not stronger.
Just quieter.
His enormous sword was absent.
His wings were folded behind him.
He looked toward Brook without hostility.
Brook crossed his arms.
"Where's Lucifer?"
"Here."
A voice came from behind him.
Brook turned again.
Lucifer was leaning against nothing.
Literally nothing.
One shoulder rested against an invisible wall that didn't exist.
His expression carried the same familiar amusement.
Brook sighed.
"Of course."
Lucifer smiled.
"You missed me."
"I really didn't."
"Heartbreaking."
Michael looked toward Lucifer.
"Must you always do that?"
"Do what?"
"Speak unnecessarily."
Lucifer shrugged.
"It bothers you."
"Yes."
"Then it's necessary."
Brook looked between them.
Something was different.
They were talking.
Not arguing.
Not threatening each other.
Actually talking.
Brook had spent so much time with their silence that hearing their voices inside his mind still felt unnatural.
He looked at Michael.
"So."
Michael waited.
"Gabriel."
Lucifer's smile disappeared.
Michael's expression became still.
Brook noticed immediately.
"That's the first time you've both looked serious since I got here."
Lucifer pushed away from the invisible wall.
"Gabriel has always been serious."
"Didn't look serious yesterday."
"He wasn't."
Brook frowned.
"How can you tell?"
Lucifer looked at him.
"Because that's Gabriel."
Michael nodded.
"He has always been like that."
Brook stared at them.
"Like what?"
Michael didn't answer immediately.
Lucifer did.
"Warm."
Brook raised an eyebrow.
"Warm?"
"Yes."
Lucifer's expression softened.
"Annoyingly warm."
Michael almost smiled.
"That is accurate."
Brook looked between them.
"So you two actually like him."
Lucifer laughed quietly.
"That's one way to put it."
Michael looked toward the distant fire.
"He was always different."
"Different how?"
Michael paused.
Then he said,
"He cared."
Brook waited.
Lucifer continued.
"More than most."
"About Heaven?"
"About everyone."
Brook frowned.
"Everyone?"
"Angels. Humans. Creatures. Things Heaven didn't even consider worth noticing."
Lucifer's voice had lost its usual teasing edge.
"Gabriel would notice."
Michael nodded.
"He would listen."
Brook thought about the previous day.
Gabriel sitting with Sera.
Gabriel giving Charon time.
Gabriel refusing to push Brook for answers.
Gabriel standing beside him on the wall.
"He still does that."
Lucifer looked at him.
"Yes."
Brook's expression changed slightly.
"You knew he'd be like that."
"We knew who he was."
Michael looked at Brook.
"We did not know what he would become."
Brook caught the distinction.
"Become?"
Neither answered.
Brook's eyes narrowed.
"You two do that a lot."
Lucifer smiled faintly.
"Do what?"
"Say something that sounds important, then stop."
"Perhaps it's because you ask questions that aren't yours to answer yet."
Brook's irritation returned.
"I hate that phrase."
"I know."
Michael turned toward Lucifer.
"You haven't changed."
Lucifer's smile widened.
"Neither have you."
Brook looked between them.
There was history in that exchange.
A tremendous amount of it.
History Brook could feel without understanding.
He leaned against an invisible surface that appeared behind him.
"So what was Gabriel like?"
Michael looked away.
"For a long time, he was the easiest of us to speak to."
Lucifer laughed.
"Not me?"
"You were difficult."
"I was honest."
"You were difficult."
Lucifer shrugged.
"Both can be true."
Brook smiled despite himself.
"And Gabriel?"
Michael's expression softened.
"He made people feel heard."
Lucifer nodded.
"He could walk into a room full of frightened angels and somehow make them breathe again."
"He didn't command them?"
"No."
Michael shook his head.
"He didn't need to."
Brook considered that.
"Sounds like a leader."
Lucifer looked at him.
"He never wanted to be."
"Then why was he an archangel?"
"Because Heaven needed one."
Brook glanced at Michael.
"Did Heaven choose him?"
Michael was silent for a moment.
"God did."
The word hung there.
Brook's expression tightened.
"God."
Neither Michael nor Lucifer reacted.
Brook remembered the first time Michael had spoken of God.
The certainty.
The reverence.
The complicated emotion behind it.
Brook didn't pursue it.
Not yet.
Instead, he asked,
"Was Gabriel close to God?"
Michael looked toward the fire.
"Yes."
Lucifer's voice was quieter.
"Very."
Brook studied him.
Lucifer didn't seem pleased by the memory.
"Jealous?"
Lucifer laughed once.
"Of Gabriel?"
"Maybe."
"No."
The answer came too quickly.
Brook noticed.
Lucifer noticed that Brook noticed.
"Don't."
"Didn't say anything."
"You were about to."
"I was."
Lucifer sighed.
"I wasn't jealous of Gabriel."
Michael looked at him.
Lucifer glared back.
"What?"
"Nothing."
"That sounded like something."
Michael's expression remained calm.
"You admired him."
Lucifer went quiet.
Brook blinked.
"Really?"
Lucifer looked irritated.
"Don't make it sentimental."
"I didn't."
"You were thinking it."
"I wasn't."
"You were."
Brook smiled.
Lucifer pointed at him.
"That face."
"What face?"
"That one."
Michael's voice carried the faintest trace of amusement.
"He did."
Lucifer looked at him.
"Traitor."
For the first time, Brook saw something he had never expected.
The three of them—
Michael.
Lucifer.
Gabriel.
Had once been brothers in a way that went beyond titles.
There had been arguments.
Laughter.
Respect.
Maybe even love.
And somehow, everything had fallen apart.
Brook looked at Michael.
"What happened between you?"
Michael's face changed.
Lucifer's smile vanished.
Brook immediately understood.
Wrong question.
Michael looked toward him.
"Not today."
Brook frowned.
"Why?"
"Because we are speaking about Gabriel."
Lucifer nodded.
"Only Gabriel."
Brook wanted to push.
He didn't.
Instead, he asked,
"Then tell me why he left."
Michael's eyes lowered.
"He didn't."
Brook blinked.
"What?"
"Gabriel did not leave Heaven in the way you think."
Lucifer's voice was quiet.
"He descended."
"There's a difference?"
"A significant one."
Brook waited.
Michael continued.
"Heaven did not cast him out."
"Then why did he come here?"
"Because I went silent."
Brook's expression hardened.
"You."
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
"Why?"
Michael looked at him.
"I don't know."
Brook stared.
"You're telling me Gabriel came all the way from Heaven because you stopped talking?"
"Not only because of that."
Lucifer folded his arms.
"But it was enough."
Brook thought about Gabriel's words.
I came because Michael went silent.
He had believed there was more.
There probably was.
But Gabriel hadn't lied.
He had simply left the rest unsaid.
Brook looked at Michael.
"Did you want him to come?"
Michael was silent.
Lucifer answered.
"He needed to."
Brook frowned.
"That's not what I asked."
Michael finally spoke.
"I did not call him."
"Then why did you want him?"
Michael's eyes remained fixed on Brook.
"Because Gabriel is Gabriel."
Brook stared at him.
"That doesn't answer anything."
"It answers more than you think."
Brook exhaled through his nose.
"You're both terrible at explaining things."
Lucifer smiled.
"We've been told."
The fire around them shifted.
For a moment, Brook saw Gabriel standing somewhere within it.
Not the Gabriel he knew now.
A younger version.
Bright.
Laughing.
Surrounded by other angels.
Michael stood beside him.
Lucifer stood on the other side.
Three figures beneath an enormous golden sky.
Then the image disappeared.
Brook blinked.
"What was that?"
Michael looked at him.
"A memory."
"Yours?"
"Yes."
Brook stared into the fire.
"You were happy."
Michael didn't answer.
Lucifer did.
"We were."
Brook glanced toward him.
Lucifer's expression was strangely distant.
"Before everything?"
Lucifer nodded.
"Before everything."
Brook wanted to ask what everything meant.
He didn't.
Instead—
"Did Gabriel ever fight you?"
Lucifer laughed.
"Constantly."
Michael sighed.
"Not constantly."
"Frequently."
"That is different."
"Not when you're losing."
Michael looked at him.
"I never lost."
Lucifer smiled.
"See?"
Brook laughed.
"You two sound like children."
Lucifer pointed toward Michael.
"He started it."
Michael looked almost offended.
"I did not."
"You absolutely did."
Brook shook his head.
"How old are you?"
Neither answered.
Brook waited.
"That's what I thought."
Lucifer laughed.
Michael's expression softened again.
"Gabriel used to stop us."
"How?"
"He would simply stand between us."
Brook blinked.
"That's it?"
"That's it."
"That sounds suicidal."
"It was effective."
Lucifer nodded.
"He was the only one who could do it without making either of us angrier."
Michael looked toward the fading fire.
"He understood us."
Brook lowered his eyes.
"And now?"
Michael's voice was quiet.
"Now he understands differently."
Brook looked up.
"Meaning?"
Michael didn't elaborate.
Lucifer's gaze hardened.
"Gabriel has lived without us for a long time."
Brook felt something tighten in his chest.
"Do you think he hates you?"
Lucifer looked away.
"No."
Michael shook his head.
"No."
"Then what?"
Neither spoke for several seconds.
Finally Michael said,
"I don't know."
Brook looked at him.
That answer sounded different.
Not evasive.
Not cryptic.
Honest.
Michael truly didn't know.
Brook sat down on the invisible ground.
The fire had become smaller.
"Does Gabriel know you're awake?"
Michael looked at him.
"He knows."
"Did he hear you yesterday?"
"No."
"Can he?"
"Not normally."
Brook nodded.
"Good."
Lucifer raised an eyebrow.
"Good?"
"I don't need him hearing every conversation in my head."
Lucifer laughed.
"He probably wouldn't."
"How do you know?"
"Because that's Gabriel."
Brook smiled.
"You really like saying that."
"It's true."
Brook looked toward Michael.
"Do you trust him?"
Michael answered immediately.
"Yes."
Lucifer answered at the same time.
"Yes."
The two brothers looked at each other.
Brook noticed.
"That was fast."
Michael nodded.
"There is no hesitation."
Lucifer's expression became serious.
"Gabriel has earned my trust many times."
Brook looked down.
"And Heaven?"
Michael's silence was answer enough.
Brook looked back up.
"I'm asking about Gabriel."
Michael nodded.
"I know."
"Would you trust him now?"
"Yes."
"Even after everything?"
"Especially after everything."
Brook looked toward Lucifer.
"And you?"
Lucifer's smile was gone.
"Gabriel is one of the few beings I would trust with my back turned."
Brook blinked.
"That's saying a lot."
Lucifer looked at him.
"It is."
Brook leaned back.
"So he's really your brother."
Michael nodded.
"Yes."
Lucifer nodded.
"Yes."
Brook looked into the fire.
He remembered the question he'd asked Gabriel.
If they're your brothers, what does that make me?
He still didn't have an answer.
Michael and Lucifer clearly knew more than they were saying.
But for once, Brook didn't feel like forcing it out of them.
Because this wasn't about him.
Not today.
It was about Gabriel.
A man who had crossed Heaven to stand beside them.
A brother who had heard Michael's silence and answered it.
A brother Lucifer trusted.
A brother Michael still cared about.
Brook stood.
"One last thing."
Michael waited.
Lucifer raised an eyebrow.
"Does Gabriel know what happened to you two?"
Michael's expression darkened slightly.
"Yes."
"Does he know what I am?"
Silence.
Brook's eyes narrowed.
Michael looked directly at him.
"That is not what we are discussing."
Brook sighed.
"Of course."
Lucifer gave a small smile.
"Ask Gabriel."
"Will he answer?"
Lucifer's smile widened.
"Probably not."
Brook groaned.
"You guys are impossible."
Michael's expression softened.
"Perhaps."
The fire began to disappear.
Brook looked at them.
"Will you talk to him?"
Michael's eyes remained fixed on him.
"When the time is right."
Lucifer nodded.
"He deserves that."
Brook looked at the darkness surrounding them.
Then back at the two brothers.
"Fine."
He took one step backward.
"Only Gabriel."
Michael nodded.
"Only Gabriel."
Lucifer smiled.
"Only Gabriel."
The inner world faded.
Brook opened his eyes.
Morning sunlight crossed the room.
He remained still for several seconds.
Then he heard a knock.
Three quiet taps.
Brook sat up.
The door opened.
Gabriel stood there.
"Breakfast."
Brook stared at him.
"You're weird."
Gabriel smiled.
"I've heard."
Brook got out of bed.
As he passed Gabriel, he stopped.
For a moment, he considered telling him.
I spoke to your brothers.
He didn't.
Not yet.
Instead, he walked past.
Gabriel followed.
And somewhere deep inside Brook, two ancient voices fell silent again.
Not because they had nothing left to say.
But because, for now, there was only one name worth speaking.
Gabriel.
