Chapter 238 - The Error

Chapter 238 — The Error

The camp did not sleep well after Heaven came looking for Gabriel.

Nobody said that out loud.

They didn't have to.

The messenger had left before nightfall, but his arrival stayed behind.

It lived in the silence between conversations.

In the way Henry looked at the sky before closing his eyes.

In the way Sera kept her book beside her instead of putting it away.

In the way Charon refused to sleep outside Crowley's coat.

And in the way Gabriel remained awake.

Brook noticed him before sunrise.

Of course he did.

Brook was awake too.

He sat near the dying remains of the fire, one knee raised, staring at the faint orange beneath the ash.

The forest around them was still dark.

Morning hadn't arrived yet.

Gabriel sat several feet away.

Not looking at the sky.

That was different.

Brook glanced at him.

"You're not going?"

Gabriel didn't look over.

"No."

"Good."

Gabriel smiled slightly.

Brook frowned.

"Don't make it weird."

"I didn't say anything."

"You smiled."

"That isn't illegal."

"It should be."

Gabriel finally looked at him.

"You wanted me to stay."

Brook looked back at the fire.

"I didn't say that."

"You said good."

"That's not the same thing."

"It sounded like the same thing."

Brook ignored him.

For several minutes, neither spoke.

Then Gabriel said quietly,

"Heaven will send someone else."

Brook looked at him.

"Another messenger?"

Gabriel shook his head.

"No."

"An army?"

"No."

That answer didn't make Brook feel better.

"What, then?"

Gabriel was silent.

Brook waited.

Finally, Gabriel said,

"Someone who wants to understand."

Crowley's voice came from the darkness.

"That's worse."

Brook looked toward him.

Crowley was awake.

Of course he was.

He sat beneath a tree with one arm resting across his knee.

Charon slept against his side.

Crowley looked exhausted.

But his eyes were open.

Gabriel sighed.

"You don't trust anyone who asks questions."

Crowley shrugged.

"I don't trust anyone who thinks they deserve answers."

Brook looked between them.

"That narrows the list."

"Exactly."

Gabriel looked toward the eastern horizon.

Morning was beginning.

A thin line of gray appeared beyond the trees.

The camp slowly woke.

Henry was first.

He stretched.

Then immediately looked upward.

Crowley laughed.

Henry frowned.

"Shut up."

"You're checking."

"No, I'm not."

"You're absolutely checking."

Henry looked back toward the sky.

"Okay. Maybe."

Sera sat up beside her things.

She rubbed her eyes.

"Nothing?"

Gabriel shook his head.

"Not yet."

Tala opened her eyes.

She had slept with one hand against the ground.

Brook looked at her.

"Did you hear anything?"

Tala slowly removed her hand from the earth.

"No."

Brook frowned.

"That sounds like a problem."

"It is."

Henry looked worried.

"Why?"

Tala stood.

"The Earth hears footsteps."

She looked toward the forest.

"Even when we don't."

Nobody said anything.

Then Charon woke.

His eyes opened.

He looked around.

Then immediately hid inside Crowley's coat.

Crowley looked down.

"Oh, come on."

Charon pulled the coat tighter around himself.

"No."

Brook stared.

"What's wrong?"

Charon didn't answer.

Crowley looked toward the trees.

His expression changed.

There.

Brook couldn't see anything.

But Crowley could.

Or maybe he simply knew.

Gabriel stood.

"Everyone stay calm."

Henry immediately stood.

"That sentence has never helped anybody."

Sera closed her book.

Tala moved closer to Brook.

Crowley remained where he was.

But one hand rested near Charon.

Brook looked into the trees.

At first—

Nothing.

Then someone stepped between them.

One person.

No wings.

No army.

No weapon.

A long pale coat moved around their legs as they walked.

They didn't appear threatening.

That was the problem.

Brook had learned that appearances meant almost nothing.

The stranger stopped several yards from the camp.

They looked young.

Too young.

Not human-young.

Something else.

Their face was calm.

Their posture relaxed.

Their eyes immediately found Gabriel.

Gabriel's expression changed.

Recognition.

Again.

Brook sighed.

"You know this one too?"

Gabriel didn't answer immediately.

"Yes."

Crowley stood.

"Wonderful."

The stranger smiled faintly.

"Crowley."

Crowley's eyes narrowed.

"I hate that Heaven knows my name."

"You're difficult to forget."

"I wasn't asking for a compliment."

"It wasn't one."

Henry quietly moved behind Sera.

Sera noticed.

She said nothing.

The stranger finally looked toward Brook.

And stopped.

Completely.

Brook felt it.

The difference.

The messenger yesterday had looked at him.

This person studied him.

Not his face.

Not his clothes.

Something deeper.

Brook's skin crawled.

Gabriel took a step forward.

"Don't."

The stranger looked at him.

"I haven't done anything."

"You're looking."

"That isn't forbidden."

"It should be."

Brook looked at Gabriel.

"Is that your answer for everything?"

Gabriel ignored him.

The stranger returned their attention to Brook.

Brook stood.

"Who are you?"

The stranger tilted their head.

"That is a complicated question."

Crowley sighed.

"Oh, we're doing this."

The stranger smiled.

"My name is Eremiel."

Brook waited.

Nothing else.

"That it?"

"For now."

Brook crossed his arms.

"Angel?"

Eremiel looked at Gabriel.

Gabriel nodded.

"Yes."

Crowley muttered,

"Obviously."

Eremiel took one step forward.

Tala immediately moved.

The ground beneath Eremiel's feet shifted.

Stone rose.

Not enough to attack.

Enough to stop.

Eremiel looked down.

Then toward Tala.

"The Earth Vessel."

Tala's face hardened.

"Don't call me that."

Eremiel considered her.

Then nodded once.

"Tala."

That was somehow worse.

Brook looked at Gabriel.

"Why does everyone know everybody?"

Gabriel almost smiled.

"Not everyone."

Crowley pointed at Eremiel.

"Ask him who I am."

Eremiel looked at Crowley.

"King of Hell."

Crowley stared at Gabriel.

"I'm going to start killing people."

Gabriel sighed.

"No."

"I was joking."

"No, you weren't."

Eremiel looked between them.

Then back toward Brook.

The humor disappeared from his face.

Brook noticed immediately.

"So."

Eremiel said.

The word was quiet.

But the camp changed around it.

Henry stopped moving.

Sera watched carefully.

Tala's fingers tightened.

Gabriel stepped closer.

Brook looked at Eremiel.

"What?"

Eremiel stared at him.

"You're the one."

Brook frowned.

"I don't know what that means."

"I don't think you do."

Gabriel's voice hardened.

"Eremiel."

The angel didn't look away from Brook.

Brook felt the attention move across him again.

It wasn't magic.

Not exactly.

But it felt like being measured.

Eremiel's eyes narrowed.

Brook's chest tightened.

The marks beneath his skin reacted.

Not brightly.

Not visibly.

A pressure.

Deep inside him.

Michael.

Lucifer.

Death.

Gaia.

All of them remained still.

Brook knew that.

And somehow—

That made Eremiel's expression worse.

"What?" Brook demanded.

Eremiel finally looked at Gabriel.

"He has them."

Gabriel said nothing.

Eremiel looked back.

"No."

Brook frowned.

"What?"

Eremiel took another step.

Tala raised one hand.

The earth moved again.

Eremiel stopped.

Brook held up his hand.

"Tala."

She looked at him.

"He's looking too hard."

Brook couldn't argue with that.

Eremiel slowly looked around the camp.

A human.

Sera.

Another human.

Henry.

A creature hiding in Crowley's coat.

The King of Hell sitting beside them.

The Earth Vessel standing beside Brook.

Gabriel—

An angel who had refused Heaven.

Then Eremiel looked at Brook again.

Something changed in his expression.

Understanding.

But not the good kind.

Brook felt it immediately.

"What?"

Eremiel spoke.

"You're wrong."

Silence.

Brook blinked.

"Excuse me?"

Eremiel shook his head slowly.

"No."

He looked toward Gabriel.

"This is wrong."

Gabriel's wings shifted.

"Careful."

Eremiel ignored him.

His attention remained on Brook.

"The order."

Brook frowned.

Eremiel took another breath.

"The silence."

Gabriel's face became completely still.

Eremiel continued.

"Michael vanished from Heaven."

Brook's jaw tightened.

"Lucifer vanished from Hell."

Crowley's expression changed.

"And now—"

Eremiel looked directly at Brook.

"You."

Brook waited.

The angel's voice became quieter.

Not louder.

That somehow made it worse.

"You are an error."

Nobody moved.

Henry stared.

Sera's fingers tightened around her book.

Crowley slowly stood.

Tala took one step toward Brook.

Gabriel moved first.

"Enough."

Eremiel looked at him.

"Gabriel."

"No."

"You brought Heaven's problem to the ground."

Gabriel's eyes hardened.

"I came because Michael went silent."

"And now Michael is inside him."

Gabriel didn't answer.

Eremiel pointed toward Brook.

Not aggressively.

Not like a weapon.

Like evidence.

"Lucifer is inside him."

Crowley's eyes narrowed.

"Careful."

Eremiel continued.

"Something older than either realm is inside him."

Tala's expression went cold.

The ground trembled.

Brook immediately looked at her.

"Tala."

She stopped.

Barely.

Eremiel noticed.

Of course he did.

His eyes returned to Brook.

"And something else is trying to arrive."

Brook felt his stomach drop.

Sera looked at him.

Gabriel stepped directly between Eremiel and Brook.

"You don't know what you're talking about."

Eremiel finally looked angry.

Not visibly.

But his calm cracked.

"I know Heaven."

Gabriel's voice was low.

"So do I."

"I know the laws."

"So did Michael."

Eremiel stopped.

The sentence landed.

Brook looked between them.

Eremiel's eyes narrowed.

Gabriel didn't move.

"You don't call him an error because you don't understand him."

Gabriel said.

"You call him an error because Heaven doesn't."

Eremiel's jaw tightened.

Crowley smiled.

"There he is."

Gabriel didn't look back.

Eremiel spoke slowly.

"If what I felt is true—"

"It isn't your job to decide."

Gabriel cut him off.

Eremiel looked at Brook again.

Brook felt something inside his chest react.

Not a Source.

Not a voice.

The faint pressure that had appeared during the previous days.

Something unfinished.

Something that had tried to write itself.

For one second—

Brook's skin burned.

He looked down.

Nothing.

Then it was gone.

But Eremiel saw it.

His face changed.

Brook knew immediately.

"Don't."

Eremiel stared at him.

"That wasn't Heaven."

Brook's voice sharpened.

"I said don't."

The angel slowly looked up.

The forest had become completely silent.

Even the birds had stopped.

Eremiel looked at Gabriel.

"You see?"

Gabriel didn't move.

"I see someone afraid."

Eremiel's eyes hardened.

"You should be."

Gabriel took one step forward.

The air changed.

Not a threat.

Not an attack.

A line.

Brook understood.

Gabriel wasn't going to fight.

But he wasn't going to move either.

Eremiel looked around the camp.

Crowley.

Tala.

Sera.

Henry.

Charon.

Brook.

Then Gabriel.

"You've chosen."

Gabriel nodded.

"Yes."

Eremiel looked at Brook.

"And he will choose what happens next?"

Brook's expression hardened.

"No."

Everyone looked at him.

Brook stepped around Gabriel.

Gabriel glanced back.

"Brook."

Brook ignored him.

He looked directly at Eremiel.

"No one gets to decide that for me."

Eremiel watched him.

Brook continued.

"Not Heaven."

Crowley's expression shifted.

"Not Hell."

Crowley smiled slightly.

"Unfortunately."

Brook looked at Tala.

"Not the Earth."

Tala nodded once.

Then back toward Eremiel.

"And apparently not angels who show up in the morning and start calling me mistakes."

Henry whispered,

"That was a good line."

Sera elbowed him.

Brook heard.

He ignored them.

Eremiel stared at him for a long time.

Then he asked,

"Do you know what you are?"

Brook's answer came immediately.

"No."

Eremiel seemed almost surprised.

Brook continued.

"But neither do you."

Silence.

Gabriel looked at him.

Something close to pride crossed his face.

Crowley looked annoyed.

"Why does everyone get dramatic speeches except me?"

"No one stopped you," Sera said.

Crowley considered that.

Then sat back down.

Eremiel looked upward.

The clouds above the forest had begun moving.

Not opening.

Just moving.

Brook watched.

"You're leaving?"

Eremiel looked back.

"For now."

Gabriel's eyes narrowed.

"That isn't an answer."

"No."

Eremiel's expression returned to calm.

"But it's all you're getting."

Crowley laughed.

"I hate him."

Eremiel looked at him.

"The feeling appears mutual."

The angel stepped backward.

Light appeared behind him.

Not the massive opening Gabriel had descended through.

Smaller.

Controlled.

A doorway.

Brook watched Eremiel step toward it.

Then the angel stopped.

He looked at Brook one final time.

"You should understand something."

Brook waited.

"Heaven makes mistakes too."

Gabriel's expression hardened.

Eremiel continued.

"And when Heaven realizes one has been made—"

Gabriel spoke.

"Leave."

Eremiel looked at him.

The two angels stared at each other.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

Then Eremiel stepped backward.

The light closed.

He was gone.

The forest remained silent.

For a long moment—

Nobody spoke.

Then Henry said,

"So."

Crowley looked at him.

"No."

"I didn't even say anything."

"You were about to."

Henry looked toward where Eremiel had disappeared.

"He called Brook an error."

"Yes."

"That feels bad."

Crowley stared at him.

"Thank you, Henry."

"You're welcome."

Brook sat back down beside the fire.

His hands were shaking slightly.

He hated that.

Sera noticed.

She didn't say anything.

She simply sat beside him.

Gabriel remained standing.

Looking toward the sky.

Brook looked up at him.

"You knew that was coming?"

Gabriel shook his head.

"No."

"Did you know he would call me that?"

Gabriel was quiet.

"No."

Brook watched him.

Gabriel finally looked down.

"But I knew Heaven would eventually try to give you a name."

Brook looked away.

"That's not my name."

"No."

Gabriel sat beside him.

"It isn't."

Tala returned her hand to the ground.

Her eyes were closed.

Brook looked at her.

"What?"

She opened them.

"The Earth heard him leave."

Brook waited.

Tala's expression remained serious.

"But it didn't relax."

Crowley looked toward the trees.

"Because now they know."

Gabriel's face darkened.

Brook looked at him.

"Who?"

Gabriel stared toward the sky.

"Heaven."

The morning continued around them.

The fire burned lower.

Henry finally started cooking again.

Charon emerged from Crowley's coat.

Sera opened her book.

The world looked normal.

Almost.

But Brook couldn't forget the words.

You are an error.

He touched his chest.

Beneath his skin, the marks remained silent.

Michael.

Lucifer.

Death.

Gaia.

And somewhere deeper—

Something that had appeared for one second.

Then disappeared.

Brook closed his hand.

An error.

Maybe Heaven believed that.

Maybe Hell would too.

Maybe everyone eventually would.

But Brook looked around the camp.

At the people who had stayed.

At the people who had chosen him.

He looked at Gabriel.

Gabriel met his eyes.

Brook spoke quietly.

"Let them call me whatever they want."

Gabriel said nothing.

Brook looked back toward the empty forest.

"They still have to come through us."

Crowley slowly smiled.

Now that—

That sounded like the beginning of a war.
