Chapter 240 - Heaven Will Not Share Him

Chapter 240 — Heaven Will Not Share Him

The camp stayed where it was.

That was Crowley's decision.

Gabriel disagreed.

For once, nobody cared.

"We need to move," Gabriel said.

Crowley sat on a fallen piece of stone near the edge of the clearing.

"We just did."

"That was a fight."

"Yes."

"They'll know where we are."

Crowley looked around at the broken trees, scorched ground, and the blood that still hadn't disappeared from the dirt.

"I think that part is obvious."

Gabriel's expression hardened.

Crowley smiled.

"See? We're communicating."

Brook sat several feet away.

Sera was cleaning the wound on his arm.

He hated every second of it.

"You're moving."

Brook looked down.

"No, I'm sitting."

"You moved."

"I adjusted."

"You moved."

Brook sighed.

Sera tightened the cloth.

He hissed.

"Fine. I moved."

Henry sat nearby with Charon.

Charon was unusually quiet.

Henry looked toward the sky every few seconds.

Crowley noticed.

"Stop doing that."

Henry looked at him.

"I can't."

"Then close your eyes."

"That doesn't solve anything."

"It solves the annoying part."

Henry looked offended.

Gabriel walked away from them.

Brook watched him go.

He looked different after the fight.

Not physically.

Something else.

Heavier.

Brook understood why.

Gabriel had spent the entire battle refusing to kill angels who had come to take him away.

Crowley had killed one.

Gabriel hadn't said anything about it since.

That silence was beginning to feel dangerous.

Brook looked at Crowley.

"You okay?"

Crowley looked at him.

"Why?"

"You've been quiet."

"I've said several things."

"Not enough."

Crowley smiled faintly.

"That's probably the nicest thing you've ever said to me."

Brook looked away.

"Don't make it weird."

"Again?"

Brook frowned.

Crowley leaned back.

"You really need new responses."

Sera finished tying the bandage.

"There."

Brook looked at his arm.

"That's it?"

"Unless you want it to get infected."

Brook stared.

"Can that happen here?"

Sera slowly looked at him.

"Yes."

Brook nodded.

"Right."

Tala stood at the edge of the clearing.

Her bare hand rested against a tree.

Brook watched her.

"You feeling anything?"

Tala didn't turn.

"Yes."

That answer made everyone look at her.

Henry stood.

"What?"

Tala slowly removed her hand.

"The Earth is quiet."

Crowley frowned.

"That's good, right?"

"No."

Brook looked toward the ground.

Tala faced them.

"The Earth isn't calm."

Nobody spoke.

Tala continued.

"It is listening."

A shadow passed across Gabriel's face.

He looked upward.

Crowley noticed.

"Oh, great."

Henry whispered,

"What now?"

Gabriel didn't answer.

Brook stood.

His injured arm protested.

Sera immediately looked annoyed.

"Sit down."

Brook ignored her.

"What is it?"

Gabriel slowly turned toward him.

"Heaven."

Crowley stood.

"I knew it."

Gabriel shook his head.

"Not physically."

Crowley frowned.

"Then what?"

Brook felt it.

Not pressure.

Not an attack.

Something opening.

Deep inside him.

Brook's breath caught.

The world around him faded.

The clearing disappeared.

He was standing inside himself.

The inner world.

Brook didn't remember choosing to enter.

That happened more often now.

The darkness stretched endlessly around him.

Not empty.

Never empty.

The space had changed since Gabriel arrived.

Brook could feel it.

The silence wasn't the same.

Something had shifted permanently.

Ahead of him—

A faint light.

Brook walked toward it.

The first figure stood beneath the white glow.

Michael.

Not Michael himself.

Brook understood that now.

The will that had manifested from the Source.

A presence carrying Michael's name.

A manifestation.

Not the being.

Not the Source itself.

Michael looked toward Brook.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Then Brook noticed something strange.

Michael wasn't looking at him.

He was looking upward.

Brook followed his gaze.

There was no sky.

Not really.

But above the inner world—

Something shone.

A distant brightness.

White.

Cold.

Watching.

Brook's stomach tightened.

Michael finally spoke.

"They have noticed."

Brook looked at him.

"Yeah."

Michael's expression remained calm.

"They noticed you before."

Brook folded his arms.

"Then why does this feel different?"

Michael looked toward the distant light.

"Because before, they wanted to understand."

The brightness above them shifted.

Brook felt it in his bones.

"And now?"

Michael finally looked at him.

"Now they want to possess."

Brook was silent.

A laugh came from the darkness.

Lucifer.

Brook turned.

Lucifer stood some distance away.

Half-hidden in shadow.

His smile was there.

But weaker than usual.

Brook noticed.

"So Heaven wants me now."

Lucifer walked closer.

"Heaven wants what Heaven cannot explain."

Brook frowned.

"That doesn't answer anything."

"It answers everything."

Brook looked toward Michael.

"You said they noticed me."

Michael nodded.

"They noticed Gabriel's silence."

Brook stared.

"Gabriel isn't silent."

"No."

Michael looked upward.

"But Heaven expected him to return."

The light above them brightened.

Brook took a step back.

He felt something.

A pull.

Not toward him.

Around him.

Like hands closing around a space.

Lucifer's smile disappeared.

"There."

Brook looked at him.

"What?"

Lucifer pointed upward.

"They are reaching."

Brook's body went cold.

"For what?"

Michael answered.

"You."

Brook laughed.

"No."

The word came out harder than he expected.

The distant brightness flickered.

Brook stepped backward.

"No."

Michael looked at him.

Brook shook his head.

"They don't get to."

Michael said nothing.

Brook looked between them.

"What does Heaven even want from me?"

Lucifer answered.

"To make you theirs."

Brook's expression darkened.

"I don't belong to Heaven."

"No," Lucifer said.

Brook turned toward him.

Lucifer's smile returned slightly.

"You don't."

Brook looked at Michael.

Michael's expression remained calm.

Brook waited.

Finally, Michael spoke.

"And Heaven will not share what it believes belongs to it."

Brook stared.

The sentence settled heavily.

Heaven will not share him.

Brook thought of Eremiel.

You are an error.

Then the retrieval unit.

The command.

Kneel.

Something inside him tightened.

Brook looked upward.

The brightness above the inner world continued to grow.

"What happens if they try?"

Michael's answer was immediate.

"They will."

Brook clenched his fists.

"That wasn't my question."

Michael looked at him.

For the first time—

Something changed in his expression.

Not fear.

Recognition.

"You'll have to decide."

Brook frowned.

"Decide what?"

Michael didn't answer.

Brook stepped closer.

"No."

Michael remained silent.

"Don't do that."

Lucifer laughed quietly.

"Do what?"

"Answer half the question."

Lucifer smiled.

"It's his favorite thing."

Brook pointed at him.

"Yours too."

Lucifer looked almost offended.

"I answer plenty."

"You answer nonsense."

"Sometimes nonsense is more useful."

Brook rubbed his forehead.

"I hate all of you."

Lucifer smiled.

"No, you don't."

Brook turned back toward Michael.

"Explain."

Michael looked at him.

Then beyond him.

Brook followed his gaze.

A dark shape stood far away.

Death.

Separate.

Always separate.

Brook couldn't see his face clearly.

He wasn't moving.

He wasn't coming closer.

He simply watched.

Brook looked back at Michael.

"Does Death know?"

Michael answered.

"Death knows what belongs to Death."

Brook frowned.

"That doesn't help."

"It isn't meant to."

Lucifer laughed again.

Brook glared at him.

Then—

Something changed.

The distant light above them pulsed.

Hard.

Brook staggered.

The entire inner world shook.

Not from Gaia.

Not from the Earth.

This was different.

Michael's head lifted.

Lucifer stopped smiling.

Death remained where he was.

The brightness above became blinding.

Brook covered his eyes.

Then suddenly—

A voice.

Not inside the inner world.

Outside.

Far away.

But reaching.

Brook couldn't understand the words.

Only the intent.

Return.

Brook froze.

The word hit the inner world like a command.

Michael's expression darkened.

Lucifer's eyes narrowed.

Brook felt something pull at him.

Not physically.

Something trying to define him.

Trying to put him somewhere.

Trying to decide where he belonged.

Brook looked upward.

"No."

The light pulsed again.

Return.

Brook's body shook.

Lucifer stepped forward.

His voice was cold.

"Heaven doesn't ask twice."

Brook turned.

"What?"

Michael answered instead.

"Heaven believes obedience is proof of order."

Brook stared upward.

The command came again.

Return.

Brook shouted,

"NO!"

The light exploded.

Brook opened his eyes.

He was back in the clearing.

Everyone was staring at him.

Henry looked terrified.

"Brook?"

Brook was breathing heavily.

Sera stood beside him.

"What happened?"

Brook looked upward.

The sky was normal.

Blue.

Clouds moving slowly.

Nothing there.

But Gabriel—

Gabriel looked pale.

Brook saw it immediately.

"You felt that."

Gabriel didn't answer.

Brook stepped toward him.

"You felt it."

Gabriel finally looked at him.

"Yes."

Crowley stood.

"What?"

Gabriel's eyes remained on Brook.

"Heaven called."

Nobody spoke.

Henry looked upward again.

"No."

Crowley grabbed the back of Henry's shirt and pulled him down.

"Stop."

Henry frowned.

"I didn't do anything."

"You were about to."

Tala watched Brook.

"What did they say?"

Brook swallowed.

"One word."

Gabriel's face tightened.

Brook looked at him.

"Return."

Silence.

Crowley laughed once.

A dark sound.

"That's funny."

Nobody joined him.

Crowley looked around.

"No?"

Sera frowned.

"What's funny?"

Crowley's eyes hardened.

"Hell says that word differently."

Brook looked at him.

"What does that mean?"

Crowley didn't answer.

Gabriel stepped toward Brook.

His voice was low.

"They're testing you."

Brook looked at him.

"With a word?"

Gabriel nodded.

"Words are powerful."

Sera's expression changed slightly.

Brook noticed.

Gabriel continued.

"Heaven has rules older than most kingdoms."

Brook looked at the sky.

"And they think those rules apply to me?"

Gabriel's silence answered.

Brook's jaw tightened.

Crowley stepped closer.

"That's the problem."

Brook looked at him.

"What?"

Crowley pointed toward the sky.

"You've got Heaven's attention."

Gabriel corrected him.

"He already had it."

Crowley looked at him.

"Then now he's got more."

Nobody argued.

Brook sat down again.

Sera immediately pointed.

"Stay."

Brook looked at her.

"I'm not a dog."

"You almost collapsed."

"Fine."

He stayed.

Tala moved closer.

She looked toward the earth.

"The ground is still listening."

Brook nodded.

"Good."

Tala looked at him.

"No."

Brook frowned.

She continued.

"Now the sky is too."

That shut everyone up.

Gabriel looked toward the clouds.

Brook watched him.

"You said Heaven won't share what it thinks belongs to it."

Gabriel turned.

Brook's eyes narrowed.

Gabriel hadn't said that aloud.

Not here.

But somehow—

He knew.

Brook saw it in his face.

"You heard them?"

Gabriel asked.

Brook looked away.

"Something like that."

Gabriel remained quiet.

Then he nodded.

"Yes."

Brook looked back.

"Yes what?"

Gabriel's expression became heavy.

"Heaven will not share you."

Brook stared.

Gabriel continued.

"Not with Hell."

Crowley's face darkened.

"Not with the Earth."

Tala's eyes narrowed.

"And not with anyone who refuses to put you back where they think you belong."

Brook stood again.

Sera opened her mouth.

Brook held up a hand.

She stopped.

He looked at Gabriel.

"Where do they think I belong?"

Gabriel stared toward the sky.

For a long moment, he said nothing.

Then—

"Heaven."

Brook's expression hardened.

"No."

Gabriel looked at him.

Brook shook his head.

"No."

The wind moved through the clearing.

Brook pointed at himself.

"I don't belong to Heaven."

Nobody spoke.

Brook looked at Crowley.

Then Tala.

Then Sera and Henry.

Then Charon.

Finally Gabriel.

"I don't belong to Hell either."

Crowley nodded once.

"Correct."

"I don't belong to the Earth."

Tala said nothing.

Brook looked at the sky.

"And I definitely don't belong to them."

Gabriel watched him carefully.

Brook lowered his hand.

"I belong where I choose."

For a moment—

Nothing happened.

Then the clouds above them shifted.

Just slightly.

Brook saw Gabriel notice.

Crowley noticed too.

Henry noticed last.

"Uh."

Everyone looked up.

The sky remained blue.

Normal.

Almost.

But for one second—

A thin white line appeared between the clouds.

Then disappeared.

Nobody moved.

Brook stared upward.

Gabriel's voice was quiet.

"They heard you."

Brook looked at him.

"Good."

Crowley smiled.

Gabriel didn't.

Because somewhere above them—

Heaven had heard Brook refuse.

And Heaven had never been good at accepting refusal.

Brook looked at the empty sky.

The retrieval unit had come.

Heaven had called.

And now the message was clear.

They didn't want to understand him.

They didn't want to protect him.

They wanted him placed somewhere.

Named.

Controlled.

Owned.

Brook closed his hand.

He looked at Gabriel.

"What happens now?"

Gabriel's answer came quietly.

"Now Heaven decides how much it's willing to take."

Brook looked back at the sky.

Above the camp—

The clouds continued moving.

But Brook could no longer see them as clouds.

They looked like a closed door.

And something on the other side was deciding whether to knock again—

Or break it down.
