Chapter 245 — Hell's Breath
By noon, the road had become hot enough to make everyone irritable.
The trees had thinned.
The grass had turned yellow.
There was no shade worth stopping beneath, so they kept walking.
Henry had stopped looking behind them.
That was deliberate.
He had spent most of the morning doing it without realizing.
Every time the wind moved through the trees, he expected to see something pale between the trunks.
Every time a root shifted beneath the dirt, his shoulders tightened.
But he kept walking.
And he did not fall.
Charon had noticed.
He had said nothing.
Which, for Charon, was practically a declaration of love.
Brook walked near the front.
His eyes were on the road.
His hands were loose at his sides.
For once, there was nothing unusual happening.
No voices.
No strange marks.
No impossible visions.
Just heat.
Dust.
Footsteps.
Then the air smelled like smoke.
Brook stopped.
Crowley stopped behind him.
Sera nearly walked into Henry.
"What?" she asked.
Brook didn't answer.
He was staring at the road.
A thin black line had appeared across the dirt.
It looked like someone had dragged a burning piece of charcoal through the earth.
The line widened.
Smoke crawled from it.
Crowley's expression changed immediately.
"That's Hell."
The crack opened.
Black fire coughed out.
Not exploded.
Coughed.
Like the earth itself had inhaled something it didn't want and was trying desperately to spit it back.
A demon came through on its hands and knees.
Then another.
Then three more.
They were wrong-shaped things.
Long limbs.
Ash-grey skin.
Teeth that didn't fit their mouths.
One dragged a broken chain behind it.
Another had black fire burning inside its ribcage.
The third stood upright.
It looked almost human.
Almost.
Its eyes opened.
"King."
Crowley's face hardened.
"Wonderful."
The demon smiled.
"Come home."
Crowley stepped forward.
"No."
The demon's smile disappeared.
The road behind it erupted.
More black fire spilled across the dirt.
"That's going to be a problem," Sera said.
Crowley sighed.
"Yes."
The demons charged.
The first one reached Sera.
Charon intercepted it.
An arm exploded from Henry's shoulder and became a blade.
The demon swung.
Charon blocked.
Metal screamed against bone.
Henry stumbled backward.
But he stayed upright.
The demon swung again.
Henry planted his feet.
"Left!"
Charon's shield formed instantly.
The blow slammed into it.
Henry pushed forward.
Charon's other arm became a hammer.
It struck the demon in the chest.
The creature flew sideways into a tree.
Henry breathed hard.
Charon looked at him.
"Still standing."
Henry grinned.
"Still standing."
A second demon came from the right.
Henry turned.
Too slow.
Charon wasn't.
The ectoplasm surged around Henry's arm, forming a thick shield.
The demon hit it.
Henry's boots dug into the dirt.
For half a second, his knees buckled.
He caught himself.
He did not fall.
"Again!" Henry shouted.
Charon obeyed.
The shield cracked outward.
The demon was thrown back.
Henry ran after it.
Across the road, Gabriel moved through three demons without killing any of them.
He caught one by the throat.
"Go back."
The demon hissed.
Gabriel threw it toward the black fire.
It twisted in midair and landed on all fours.
It charged again.
Gabriel sighed.
"Fine."
Light flashed.
The demon hit the ground unconscious.
Another came from behind.
Gabriel ducked.
Crowley appeared.
His fist struck the demon hard enough to throw it across the road.
Gabriel glanced at him.
"You could have killed it."
"I could have."
"Why didn't you?"
Crowley looked at him.
"Because you were about to give me another speech."
Gabriel smiled.
"I wasn't."
"You were thinking about it."
"I was."
"Exactly."
Crowley turned back toward the fire.
"Stay out of my Hell."
Gabriel followed.
"That doesn't make sense."
"It doesn't have to."
Sera raised both hands.
Words appeared in the air.
Not sentences.
Commands.
STOP.
BIND.
The nearest demon froze.
Black lines wrapped around its arms.
Sera clenched her fist.
The words tightened.
The demon screamed.
Another tore through the spell.
Sera turned.
"Brook!"
Brook was already moving.
He hit the demon from the side.
It crashed into the dirt.
Brook rolled, came up on one knee—
And felt it.
The heat inside him changed.
His breathing slowed.
His fingers curled.
Something smiled.
Not outside.
Inside.
The world narrowed.
The demon in front of him moved.
Slow.
Weak.
Easy.
Brook could kill it.
He knew exactly where to strike.
His body leaned forward.
A pulse went through his muscles.
Violence.
Simple.
Clean.
Hungry.
The demon crawled backward.
Brook stepped toward it.
The impulse grew.
Break it.
Brook's hand tightened.
The world around him became distant.
He could hear Lucifer.
Not clearly.
Just enough.
There.
Brook took another step.
The demon raised an arm.
Brook caught it.
His grip tightened.
Bone cracked.
The demon screamed.
Brook's eyes darkened.
He could finish this.
One movement.
One.
His body began to move.
Then Brook stopped.
Completely.
His fingers remained around the demon's arm.
His breathing was heavy.
The instinct pushed.
He could feel it.
Not as a voice telling him what to do.
As a desire.
A terrible, effortless desire.
Kill.
Brook closed his eyes.
"No."
The demon stared at him.
Brook opened his eyes.
"No."
He released its arm.
The pressure remained.
He felt his muscles trembling.
Lucifer's presence curled somewhere inside him.
You felt it.
Brook swallowed.
"I know."
And you stopped.
Brook looked at the demon.
"Yeah."
The instinct faded.
Not gone.
Just quieter.
Brook stepped back.
The demon stared at him like it couldn't understand why it was alive.
Brook pointed toward the black fire.
"Go."
It ran.
Brook exhaled.
That had been different.
Not because Lucifer had stopped him.
Lucifer hadn't.
Brook had.
The road was still burning.
Black flames crawled along the ground.
A demon burst from the fire and charged Henry.
Henry saw it.
This time, he didn't freeze.
"Charon."
A shield formed.
The impact knocked Henry backward.
His boots scraped across the dirt.
His knees bent.
His hands shook.
The demon pushed harder.
Henry gritted his teeth.
"Not today."
Charon's arm became a blade.
Henry twisted.
The blade struck the demon across the chest.
It staggered.
Henry followed with a second strike.
Then a third.
The demon collapsed.
Henry stood over it.
Breathing hard.
Still upright.
Charon appeared beside his face.
"That was impressive."
Henry wiped sweat from his forehead.
"I almost fell."
"But you didn't."
Henry looked at the ground.
"No."
He smiled.
"I didn't."
The last demon crawled out of the fire.
It was larger than the others.
Crowley recognized it immediately.
"Oh, you have got to be kidding me."
The demon stood.
Its body was covered in black cracks.
Fire leaked from its mouth.
It looked at Crowley.
"King."
Crowley rolled his shoulders.
"You're becoming repetitive."
"It calls you."
"I don't care."
"The throne waits."
Crowley's eyes hardened.
"I said no."
The demon roared.
Black fire exploded across the road.
Everyone moved.
Tala slammed her palm against the ground.
The dirt rose just enough to break the wave.
No earthquake.
No great eruption.
Just a wall of earth.
The fire hit it.
Steam and smoke filled the road.
Brook emerged through the haze.
The demon charged.
Brook moved.
Not with the Instinct.
Not with a mark.
Just his own body.
He ducked beneath the first strike.
Drove his elbow into the demon's ribs.
The creature barely moved.
It swung.
Brook blocked.
The impact sent him sliding backward.
He looked down at his boots.
Then at the demon.
"You're heavy."
The demon roared.
Brook smiled despite himself.
"Okay."
It attacked again.
Brook moved with it.
Step.
Turn.
Strike.
Block.
Move.
He wasn't stronger than it.
He didn't need to be.
He waited.
The demon overcommitted.
Brook grabbed its arm and redirected the charge.
The creature crashed into the dirt.
Crowley appeared behind it.
Hellfire gathered around his hand.
The demon looked up.
Crowley smiled without humor.
"You should have listened."
The fire struck.
The demon vanished.
The black crack in the road snapped shut.
Silence returned.
Smoke drifted across the road.
Nobody spoke for several seconds.
Then Henry coughed.
Charon raised a hand.
"I believe breakfast has been ruined."
Sera looked at him.
"Breakfast was already ruined."
Brook nodded.
"She's right."
Henry laughed.
Crowley stared at all of them.
"You people are remarkably casual about demons."
Gabriel looked at the blackened road.
"We've had a busy week."
Crowley sighed.
"That's not reassuring."
They left the road before the smell of Hell could settle into their clothes.
They walked until the smoke disappeared behind them.
Henry remained near the middle of the group.
His legs were tired.
His hands still trembled occasionally.
But he was walking.
He hadn't fallen.
Brook walked beside him.
Neither said anything.
After a while, Henry glanced over.
"You stopped yourself."
Brook knew what he meant.
"Yeah."
Henry nodded.
"Good."
Brook looked at him.
"That's all?"
Henry shrugged.
"You didn't need me to say anything else."
Brook smiled.
"Fair."
They continued walking.
Behind them, the road was empty.
The black fire was gone.
The demons were gone.
But beneath the dirt, something deep below the world had noticed the brief flare of Hell.
And farther back, where the white tree had once stood, its roots continued moving.
Slowly.
Patiently.
Following.
Brook never looked behind him.
Neither did Henry.
For different reasons.
