Umin had been conscious the entire time.
When that strange lady had entered their prison Umin had poured a lot of his leaking Qi in maintaining a barrier to prevent his soul from being affected by whatever strange things they intended to do.
Unfortunately this meant that Igneel fell victim to their brainwashing.
Silently he had watched as Igneel and Travis were packaged up and shipped towards the event like products meant to be on the shelves. He was also conscious as they were placed in a room along with that strange device. Unfortunately the mind control spell they mimicked was more potent than he expected.
In the end Umin was forced to shut off his senses from Igneel's body to remain unaffected. Essentially closing himself off from the world in a form of seclusion, using meditation and various mind focusing techniques to ensure he was left untouched from its strange control.
