Mathew's phone vibrated as he and Destiny travelled back from Ashbourne.
Margaret and Christy were with them. The journey had been quieter than any of them expected. Christy had spoken little after recounting what she remembered of the ritual, while Margaret stayed close to her, occasionally reaching across to touch her hand as if reassuring herself that her mother was really there.
Destiny sat beside Mathew, looking out of the window.
She had seen Ezra's face in the memory. She had heard Christy describe what he had done. No matter how many times she tried to separate the grandfather she had grown up with from the man she had seen in the clearing, they remained the same person.
Mathew glanced at his phone and saw Harold's name.
He answered.
"Dad, it's me. I need you and mom to meet us at the café."
There was a brief pause.
"Is something wrong?" Harold asked.
