Chapter 4 - NEW GAME: THE ONE HE SAVED

Gunshots tore through the silence, shattering the world into instant chaos.

"MOVE!" Xara shouted, grabbing Alisa by the tactical vest and yanking her down to the floor just as a volley of bullets ripped through the wall behind them.

Glass exploded into a million shimmering pieces. Concrete cracked and splintered. The deafening sound of impact echoed through the warehouse like thunder.

Rania didn't move. Not at first. Her eyes were still locked dead ahead. On him. On Aiden. Another shot rang out, striking the floorboard inches from Rania's boot.

"VEX!" Alisa yelled over the gunfire.

The codename snapped her out of her trance. Rania dropped low, rolling behind a steel pillar just as a high-caliber round tore through the exact space she had been standing seconds ago.

"Snipers; north and east corners!" Alisa shouted, her sharp eyes rapidly scanning the rafters. "We're completely surrounded!"

"No kidding!" Xara snapped back, popping out from cover to fire blindly into the dark. "Who the hell set us up?!"

Through the storm of flying lead and debris, Aiden stood perfectly still in the center of the room. Untouched. Unbothered. It was as if the bullets knew to avoid him. Because they weren't meant for him.

Rania's eyes narrowed, the realization burning cold in her chest. "…You knew." A faint, humorless smirk touched Aiden's lips. "Of course, I did."

Pure rage flared in Xara's eyes. She stepped out from cover, raising her rifle. "I'm taking him down!"

"STOP!" Rania's voice cut sharply through the chaos. Xara froze. Alisa turned sharply to look at her leader.

And in that microscopic split second of distraction, a sniper in the eastern rafters adjusted their position. A bright red laser dot landed dead center on Alisa's chest.

"Alisa." The real name slipped from Aiden's lips. Soft. Urgent.

Time seemed too violently slow down. Aiden's cool facade shattered. For the first time since he stepped out of the shadows, there was something else in his eyes. Not mockery. Not calm superiority. It was fear.

"DOWN!" He moved. He crossed the distance faster than any of them could process. A gunshot cracked louder than the rest. Aiden lunged, shoving Alisa violently aside. A sickening impact followed as the sniper's bullet caught him in the shoulder instead.

Alisa hit the concrete hard, all the breath knocked from her lungs. She gasped, her eyes widening in absolute shock. "…What?"

Aiden staggered back a step, gripping his bleeding shoulder, but he didn't fall. Xara stared, her jaw practically hitting the floor. "…Did he just…?"

"GET UP!" Aiden snapped; the mocking tone entirely gone. His voice was raw, real, and urgent. "This place is rigged to collapse!" As if on cue, a massive explosion shook the foundation of the building. The ceiling above them groaned, raining dust and heavy debris down onto the floor.

"What are you doing?!" Xara shouted over the noise, pointing her gun at him. "He's the target!" Alisa didn't move. She pushed herself up onto her elbows, her wide eyes locked entirely on the man bleeding in front of her. "…Why?"

Aiden looked down at her. Just for a second. "…Because you were never supposed to be here." Rania stepped out from the shadows, her weapon raised and her voice dangerously low. "…You don't get to decide that."

Aiden's gaze shifted to Rania. For a fleeting moment, despite the explosions and the gunfire, the rest of the world seemed to fade away. "…You still hesitate, Vex," he said quietly. Rania steadied her aim, aiming right at his chest. "Don't mistake it for weakness."

A secondary explosion tore through the south wall. The floor trembled violently, threatening to give way completely.

"ARGH… this place is coming down!" Xara screamed, shielding her face from a shower of sparks. "We need to move, NOW!"

Aiden turned away first, limping toward a hidden access door behind a shattered concrete wall. "Go," he ordered over his shoulder. None of the girls moved. "I said GO!" This time, it wasn't a suggestion. It was a roar.

Alisa pushed herself up slowly. She was still watching him, her brilliant, calculating mind failing to make sense of what just happened. "Move!" Xara grabbed Alisa's arm, hauling her to her feet.

But Alisa dug her boots in, resisting for just a second. "…Come with us," she called out. Silence. Aiden didn't turn back. "I'm not your ally, Specter."

Alisa's chest tightened. "…You just saved my life." A heavy pause hung in the suffocating air. "…Don't make it mean something it doesn't." His words were meant to be cold, but the slight tremor in his voice betrayed him.

A massive steel beam crashed down from the ceiling. The structure groaned, screaming as it tore itself apart. Xara pulled Alisa with everything she had. "WE'RE LEAVING!"

Alisa finally ran. But her eyes remained fixed on Aiden's retreating silhouette until the smoke and shadows swallowed him whole. Rania was the last to turn. She stared at the empty doorway he had vanished through. So many questions. No answers. Then, she turned and sprinted for the exit.

The three operatives burst through the exterior doors into the pouring rain just as the warehouse collapsed entirely behind them, swallowed by a roaring inferno of fire, dust, and twisted metal.

Outside, silence slowly returned, broken only by the crackle of flames and the heavy downpour. It was a heavy, suffocating silence. Xara bent over, resting her hands on her knees as she gasped for breath. "…What the hell just happened in there?"

Alisa stood completely still in the rain. Her hands, usually so steady, were trembling slightly. "…He saved me." Rania didn't respond. She stood like a statue, staring into the burning ruins, her expression an impenetrable mask.

But inside, Rania's world was shifting. Aiden was supposed to be their enemy. He was supposed to be a traitor. And yet, when the moment came, he chose to take a bullet for one of them. Not her. Not Xara. He chose Alisa.

As Rania watched the flames reflect in the puddles, she realized that Aiden's choice was the most dangerous thing that could have happened. Because a bullet could only kill one of them but this? This was going to tear Red Veil apart.
