Bryar would not have been a king if he could not read a situation the moment he stepped into it.
He had been standing outside the village gate for only a few minutes now. But in truth, he had entered the forest more than half an hour earlier.
He could have flown.
The thought crossed his mind the moment he came to Vrona. One descent, wings cutting the air, and he would have reached the village in moments. But a sudden landing would have put the wolves on edge. A gargoyle dropping from the sky without warning was not how one announced a peaceful visit.
So, he chose the ground.
He trekked through the forest instead, letting the pack discover him on their own terms.
The woods were thick, branches twisting into a maze that nearly swallowed him whole. More than once, he realized he had strayed off any clear path. He knew there had to be private routes, hidden trails meant only for wolves, but he didn't know where they were.
