Outside the world, drifting through chaos at the same pace as the reality unfolding behind him, Layton watched the fire move.
It did not travel the way ordinary fire traveled, consuming a path and dying once the path ran out. It reproduced. Each new point of contact was a complete instance of what Lilith had become, not a diminished copy carried outward from some original source, so that the fire crossing from one drifting world to the next was less spreading than arriving, independently, everywhere it touched.
