Chapter 27 - Restraints

Selina Kyle:

"Easy there," I say, grabbing the sick Atlantean's hand and guiding him to the nearest cot. As I sit him down, I hear voices and turn around.

"Ahhh," Dr. Crane cries, rubbing his head as he flips through page after page in the notebook he's holding. "Where is it? Where is it!"

Iris drops to her knees and places one of her hands on his shoulder.

"What are you looking for?" She asks.

"The proper measurements for Atlantean," Dr. Crane answers, still flipping through pages. "According to The Man's notes, while Atlanteans and humans do have some similar features, their bodies are naturally tougher because of the constant ocean pressure. It means when administering medicine, I have to be careful with the dosage. Too little and it won't help them. Too much and I risk making them sick. Well, even sicker than they are now. Ahh, I found it! Ms. Iris, could you please hold this?"

Dr. Crane gives Iris the book, and she holds it open for him. While reading the book, his head snapping right and left, Dr. Crane stabs a bottle of medicine with a syringe. He slowly and carefully pulls the needle back until the tube is filled up to a certain line. Dr. Crane then tries to inject the Atlantean, but the needle bends.

"Oh, right. Tougher skin. I'm going to need some stronger needles. Where on earth is Supergirl?"

"The last time I saw her," Red Hood starts, "She was going back to the Junker to grab more medical supplies."

"I'll go and see what's keeping her," I say, running toward the Junker sub. Climbing up and dropping down the hatch, I head toward the infirmary, but stop when I find Supergirl with an armful of medical supplies.

"Kara! What are you doing here? Dr. Crane is waiting for you--"

As I approach Supergirl, I notice something. Even when I'm yelling at her, she isn't looking at me. She's looking at something else. Following her eyes, I turn and see The Man's door.

"Oh boy."

I shake my head and roll my eyes.

"Kara," I start, tapping Supergirl's on her shoulder. She snaps out of her trance and turns her head.

"What? Oh, Selina. What are you doing here?"

"I'm here for the medical supplies you were supposed to get."

Kara slaps herself on her forehead.

"Oh, right. I'm so sorry about that. I got distracted--"

"You miss him," I say, cutting Kara off. "Don't you?"

"Wha--What are you talking abo--"

I click my tongue, cross my arms, and roll my eyes.

"Oh, please. I have a harder time reading the blueprints of museums I robbed. Okay. I'm just going to be straightforward. Mostly because we don't have time. Scarecrow really needs those supplies. Supergirl, what is going on between you and the sunglasses man? Before, you two were always close, practically glued at the hip. Whenever one of you went, the other was there. Now, it's like you two can't stand to be in the same room. What happened!"

Kara opens her mouth. I think she wants to answer, but the words get stuck in her throat.

"I--I---I just---I don't know," Kara finally says, "I just don't know if I can see him anymore."

"What?"

"Selina. The man in the sunglasses. He...He killed someone. I saw him snap someone named Phantom Stranger's neck."

When I hear what Kara says, I couldn't help but freeze.

"When was this?"

"It was back in Jump City, just before Trigon's awakening. And it wasn't just that. You're not going to believe me when I say this, but--"

"If it involves the man in the sunglasses, then yeah, it's probably true, and I'll believe you."

"But the man, somehow, changed. He transformed into something like a giant beast. He was rampaging and destroying everything. The Lords of Order didn't stand a chance."

"Is that what happened to them?" I ask. "Between Trigon destroying the city and almost being captured by Superman, I guess I never got the chance to ask what exactly happened to them. But wait, what does any of this have to do with the man in the sunglasses?"

"It shouldn't bother me," Kara answers, "It really shouldn't, but I don't know why. It does! The man has secrets. A lot of them, and some of them, seem dangerous."

Kara turns and looks at the man's bedroom door again. Despite everything she just said, I still look like Kara cares about the man. She really cares about him. Reaching out, I pat Kara on her shoulder.

"I'm not going to lie," I start, "The man does scare me, too, and unfortunately, it's not a little. He clearly has secrets, and as you said, some of them, or maybe most of them, seem dangerous. But you have to remember something else."

"Remember what?"

"You have to remember that, despite all his secrets, all his powers, he really doesn't use them much."

I can see the gears turning in Kara's head as she processes what I said.

"Yeah, the man in the sunglasses can do a lot, I'm not even going to take a guess at what the list will look like, but there's one thing he does constantly. He restrains himself. In a weird and I hope not insulting way, he reminds me a little of Superman, before the fall of Metropolis. Superman always practiced restraint. He held himself back and was careful. It wasn't until Joker that he stopped. I think the man is the same way. Whenever he was with you, or anyone else, he always restrained himself, using his brain and fists instead of whatever power he had."

As I go on, Kara slowly raises her head.

"And even when he does use superpowers," I go on, "It's still nothing too powerful. If anything, it just shows much more the man is holding back."

"He really does hold back a lot," Kara says, "And sometimes, when it becomes too much to handle, that's when he really needs help. Oh my god. Oh my god!"

Out of nowhere, Kara starts twisting and turning her head, looking all over the empty hallway.

"Oh my god!"

"What," I yell. "What is it? What's wrong?"

"The man is by himself. He left alone to rescue Harleen and Aquaman."

 "So?"

"So? Selina, he is by himself, without anyone to help him."

The realization hits me like a bus.

"Oh my god. The man is by himself."

"I have to go and find him."

Before I can do or say anything, Kara pushes the armful of supplies into my arms. She walks right past me and toward the Junker's hatch.

"Kara, wait!"

Darth Slayer:

"Arghhh!"

Screaming as I shoot out my hand, I unleash a lightning storm, electrocuting a yellow lantern. Shaking as lightning bolts hit his body, I use the force to grab him. Spinning around, I throw the smoking yellow lantern into another lantern, knocking both of them into the water. However, more yellow lanterns are still approaching me, along with a few One Earth helicopters.

The yellow lanterns attack first. They surround the Rouge Shadow from all sides and shoot out their stupid yellow rings, firing energy beams.

Swinging my two lightsabers, I destroy the energy beams, shattering them into pieces before disappearing entirely. Throwing my sabers, they fly through the air, spinning and hitting the surrounding yellow lanterns. Breaking their personal shields, the shields also shatter before disappearing, and the lanterns burn and fall out of the sky.

"Proxy-2," I shout, speaking into the wrist communicator while using the force to guide my lightsabers back into one of my hands. "Are you clear to use hyperdrive?"

"Yes," Proxy-2 replies, "But I still cannot activate it."

"Why not? What's stopping you?"

"You are, sir. If I use the hyperdrive right now, while you are on top of the Rouge Shadow, you will be thrown off. Please return to the inside now."

"Understood."

I lower my hand and rush to jump back inside the Shadow. However, before I can reach the ledge, I sense something incoming. Backflipping into the air, landing on my hand before pushing myself into the air and landing on my feet, I dodge a single bright red laser beam. Turning, I see the Android flying after me.

Despite still fizzling, the nanobots in his body seeming unstable and unable to bind properly, with only one wing and a pair of sparking eyes, the Android is still in fighting condition. Armed with a nanobot copy of Hawkgirl's mace, a copy of Hal Jordan's green lantern ring, and even a copy of Wonder Woman's indestructible bracelets, the Android throws his mace at me.
