Chapter 2 - Chapter 1: Another day

I was awoken by the sound of the eight o'clock train yet again today, if there is only one advantage to living in this apartment it would be the convenient alarm clock. I get up and freshen up to get ready for work, can't be a degenerate who smells bad at work. When I reach the kitchen there's breakfast ready for me with a note: "Enjoy it, you need all the energy you can get."

I smile and enjoy the meal before getting dressed and heading out. "Another day, another dollar." I say as I begin to walk away from home, an hour later I'm standing at the gate ready to start the day. I'll come out and say it, I'm flat ass broke, between living and daily necessities, I also have to help my sisters through college. No, I have no debt, I made a deal with the collectors my parents borrowed from for their drinking problems, but that's a story for another day.

I shake the random thoughts from my head as the gate opens to get started with my day moving building supplies and doing runs to get the boss whatever he wants. He always gives me a bit extra and says "Keep the change." Knowing my circumstances, I have a decent body from all the construction work, so I may be sweaty at the end of the day, but at least I'm not sore anymore at work. On break time I get to enjoy the cool water from the dispenser on site, and some of the guys chip in some of their lunch to help a guy out. Gotta say, some of their wives and girlfriends are decent cooks, I'm very grateful for all the help they've given me. It didn't start out this way, when I first came here I was scrawny and sickly looking. They looked down on me saying I'll quit after a day or two, but seeing my determination to be useful and my hardworking attitude, they warmed up to me.

Eventually I got into shape and the work became easier, but damn is it boring sometimes, having to move things around and go on runs to get coffee or weed, whatever the boss feels like having. It's mundane but the pay is pretty good, unless you account for wear and tear on your body, I'm young so who cares? As long as I don't have to climb up the rafters I'll be fine, ugh just thinking about heights gives me shivers.

At the end of the day, around 8pm, we shut down the site and go home, another hour walk home to an empty house with a plate of food on the kitchen counter, "I'm glad they come back to make sure I eat but they better not be letting their grades slip to feed me." I eat fast before going to wash up and sleep, pay day's tommorow, I'm gonna get them something to help with their studies. I think about the goings on of tommorow and slowly fall asleep.
