Maximilian shook his head as he released Madam Beckett's wrist, almost as though he couldn't believe what he was seeing.
"Call your men," he demanded. "Go on. Call them."
Madam Beckett fumbled for her phone with trembling hands and immediately called Alan.
Nothing.
The call wouldn't even connect.
She tried Gromov next.
Again, nothing.
"No… no, no, no…"
Her breathing grew ragged as panic took over. She turned back toward Maximilian, her eyes wide with terror.
"The Sovereign…"
She struggled to steady her voice.
"I need to see the Sovereign. Right now! He's known everything from the beginning. He needs to know that his other heir—"
"It's too late." Maximilian caught her wrist again just as she tried to rush past him. "There's nowhere safer for you now than here, Anna."
"Let me go!" Madam Beckett fought against his grip. "Max, have you lost your mind?! I have to tell Clyde his child is in danger!"
