Chapter 232 New Jutsu!

Sasuke's heavy eyes opened to find a lizard tail in his face. Oscar flicked his nose with it.
"Oscar. Get off my chest."
The crystal lizard looked back with a handful of rocks already stuffed in his mouth.
"Eat them slowly." Sakura cooed from beside him, offering a second bowl. "You'll choke."
"You shouldn't feed him that stuff." Sasuke said, sitting up with Oscar transferred to his other hand by instinct.
"I seasoned them." Sakura defended herself, producing a salt shaker from somewhere and dusting the bowl's contents.
Oscar visibly salivated.
"Finish what's in your mouth first." Sasuke said, frowning down at him.
Oscar made a face. He had clearly inherited Naruto's habit of loading his mouth past capacity and refusing to swallow until the option was no longer available.
Sakura giggled quietly then, she said," You have gotten stronger. That spar was something."
"You were also... good." Sasuke grunted. He knew that was true but it hadn't mattered much. The thought sat in him like a stone. Before it could sink further the sound of several hundred Naruto clones pulled his attention to the lake.
"What're they doing?"
The clones were split into two groups working separate drills. One group was producing small spheres of water inside their mouths. This was raw chakra converted into matter. A Water nature transformation exercise.
Several clones were channeling water chakra through their fingers held at a very specific angle near their waists. They were fake-peeing into the lake and laughing loud enough to be heard from the treeline.
Sasuke and Sakura shook their heads at that. Naruto will be naruto, I guess.
The other group was working earth chakra into the lakebed and the surrounding dirt, trying to shift its composition. Earth chakra at its foundation increased the density and structure of whatever it was pushed into. A master could make steel indestructible and clay into something that moved like it was alive.
"They are training earth and water nature transformation."
"That means he is planning to expand his jutsu roster." Sasuke muttered, watching a clone successfully turn the bank into quicksand and immediately fall into it while the others laughed. "He could start using wood release after learning both of those naturez."
Sakura was quiet for a moment. "I don't want to imagine how strong he gets after this." She said it lightly but their was a certain dullness in her eyes. "Feels like he is leaving us behind."
"He is." Sasuke said.
Sakura looked down at her hands.
Sasuke watched a clone drag itself out of the quicksand pit by its fingernails. "But Naruto is looking back. That's why I think he wanted this spar. To see if we could still see him from where we're standing."
"Oh." Sakura said softly. "Can we catch up?"
Sasuke raised an eyebrow at her. It was unlike her to sound like that.
"Why not?"
Sakura let out a short breath that wasn't quite a laugh.
"I don't plan on being left behind." Sasuke said. "I'll grow stronger and catch up to him. After that..."
Itachi's face surfaced behind his mind and he let the sentence stay unfinished.
Sakura reached over and took his hand.
"We have grown stronger than before." She said. "We will grow stronger... Together."
Sasuke looked down at their hands, then up at her with a raised eyebrow.
"Together?"
"I-I mean as a team." Sakura said as her face turned red. "Team Seven. Teamwork. As teammates."
"Hn." Sasuke grunted with a small smile as Oscar jumped down from his lap and rushed toward the original.
Naruto was standing in front of Kakashi with two kunai pressed to his temples.
"Go, Go, Lightning."
Naruto did an interpretive dance for good measure.
Nothing happened.
"What is the tomato brain doing, Kakashi?" Sasuke asked as he and Sakura walked over.
The white-haired jonin turned a page.
"Well, to answer your question, I am going to learn the Chidori, dattebayo." Naruto cheered. Oscar raised his arms in solidarity.
"..."
"..."
Kakashi turned another page. A crow cawed somewhere in the distance calling Naruto stupid.
"Shut up."
"Would it not be better to learn another fire style jutsu?" Sasuke said, reminding the redhead that his entire fire jutsu repertoire was exactly one technique.
"Play to your strengths, Naruto." Sakura agreed.
"You're right, but the Chidori would be really cool." Naruto said.
"Sensei, help us." Sakura turned to their lazy teacher.
"Let him tire himself out." Kakashi said, not looking up. "After that I will explain why learning the Chidori is unnecessary when he already has the Rasengan."
The trio plus Oscar stared at the jonin and waited.
Kakashi closed his book.
"Okay. Listen up. The Rasengan is incomplete."
Naruto gasped.
"The Fourth Hokage intended to combine his chakra nature with the Rasengan. But the technique is already formed purely from chakra manipulation. Adding elemental nature into it is extraordinarily difficult. S-rank, at minimum. When I was younger I tried to add lightning nature into the Rasengan myself. That experiment is what lead me to the Chidori which is also technically incomplete."
Sasuke and Naruto exchanged a look.
"Wait." Sakura said slowly. "Doesn't that mean Naruto can potentially add multiple chakra natures into his Rasengan? If each element produces a different effect, Naruto technically has five new jutsu waiting to be discovered."
Naruto's jaw dropped as he remembered the Soul Rasengan. The way his magic enhanced Rasengan absorbed the souls in Lordran. Maybe he could find a way to do the same with an element added to the Rasengan. He turned to Kakashi, who gave a single nod.
"Still want to learn the Chidori?"
Naruto pursed his lips. "For now, no."
Kakashi filed away the words "for now" and set them on fire internally. "Good," he said. "Because I have some new jutsu for you."
"Hey, you didn't get to decide that." Naruto said.
"We never agreed you had to select any three jutsu, and I suspect you have none in mind regardless."
"Hey." Naruto said, feeling genuinely offended.
"Did you have something in mind?"
"No, but don't say it like that. I am smart." Naruto said.
Sakura opened her mouth with one finger already raised.
"Noooo." Naruto said, pointing at her.
Sakura closed her mouth.
"Anyway, the three jutsu I had in mind were Earth Style: Mud Wall, Water Style: Wild Water Wave, and Fire Style: Will-o-Wisp." Kakashi said, demonstrating each in sequence. A wall of earth rose from the ground, then water poured from his mouth in a wide rushing torrent, then a small blue flame flickered to life on the tip of his finger.
"They don't seem that strong." Naruto said.
"Or useful." Sasuke said.
Kakashi sighed. "Sakura, would you like to answer?"
Sakura nodded. "Not every jutsu is about strength. You have to think about what they bring to your style. Naruto, you mainly use kenjutsu and wind style. Fire style gives you a powerful attack option. You have a lot of power but not enough utility."
Naruto nodded slowly, his mind already thinking about the three jutsu over with his style. Mud Wall was an interesting defensive option. But Wild Water Wave and Will-o-Wisp were less obvious.
"Sensei, can you explain what the water and fire jutsu actually do?" Naruto asked.
"Wild Water Wave releases water from the mouth. It is considered the most basic foundation jutsu in water release." Kakashi said. "Will-o-Wisp is a special fire jutsu. The flame burns when a target channels chakra near it."
Naruto's eyes widened. "I think I know why you selected these three."
"Do tell." Kakashi said with an eye smile.
"Mud Wall gives me a defensive and trap option I don't currently have. Say an enemy is charging me with a sword. My clones raise two mud walls on either side, trapping their movement so they can't swing freely while I still can with a thrusting weapon." Naruto said, the excitement creeping into his voice as the picture sharpened.
Sasuke and Sakura glanced at each other. They were impressed by Naruto's usage of a jutsu derived from his experiences in lordran.
Kakashi smiled. The average chunin couldn't escape the habit of using a jutsu exactly as it was designed to be used rather than rebuilding it around themselves. The ones who could went on to become something else entirely. Naruto already had the mentality of an elite shinobi when it came to jutsu usage.
"Wild Water Wave being a basic foundation jutsu means I can build on it with shape manipulation." Naruto continued.
"Good deduction." Kakashi said. "The Wild Water Wave is called the mother of all water style. That is more figurative than literal, but one can trace the majority of water style jutsu back to its core mechanics. And yes, with shape manipulation, you can change wild water wave into more."
"And lastly, Will-o-Wisp." Naruto said, his expression going quiet and thoughtful. "You said it burns when someone channels chakra. You didn't say it had to be my chakra."
"You could burn a ninja by provoking them into using chakra to defend themselves against the flames." Sasuke suggested, though something nagged at him. "But if the jutsu could do that, why wasn't it well known?"
"Will-o-Wisp is a D-rank jutsu, surprisingly." Kakashi answered. "The reason it never became famous is simple. The moment an opponent figures out the mechanism, they stop using chakra defensively and the technique becomes useless. It sounds powerful for genin but it's not used that much by more experienced shinobi. Do you still want it?"
Naruto went quiet. Kakashi had to have a reason for selecting a jutsu that sounded strong and wasn't.
Think, Naruto, think.
Oscar chirped.
"What did you say?" Naruto said, looking downat him.
Oscar chirped again at length, gesturing with one small claw and drawing some kind of weird image in the soil.
"Yeah." Naruto said slowly, then laughed. "I think I get it now."
"Why?" Sakura said, looking between them. "What am I missing?"
"Come on, Sakura. It is so obvious." Sasuke said sarcastly.
"Don't pretend you worked it out either, Sasuke." Sakura hissed.
"Looks like we have the answer to who the smartest person on Team Seven is." Naruto said, clapping once. Oscar drew himself up to his full height and looked proud.
"Yeah, yeah. Sensei, what are we going to learn?" Sakura asked.
Before Kakashi could answer, Naruto cut him off. "You two are going to learn the... Rasengan."
"..."
Everyone stared blankly at the redhead.
"What?" Sakura yelled.
"Not so loud, Pinky." Naruto cleaned his ear with a finger. "Remember our deal at the start of the spar. Winner gets to make the losers do whatever they want. Since you two lost, you have to learn the Rasengan because I said so."
Sakura stood pale as a ghost and wondered what on earth was wrong with him.
"Naruto, that is your father's technique." Sasuke said.
"And?" Naruto asked. "I don't think my dad would mind me teaching it to my best friends."
Sakura and Sasuke smiled at that.
"The road to hell is paved with good intentions." Kakashi said.
"Wie bitte?" Naruto said in another language.
"Naruto, I know you want your friends to be strong enough not to get hurt in the Chunin Exams." Kakashi said. "But giving them the Rasengan isn't the way to go."
"Why not?"
"Because it is an extremely chakra intensive jutsu. Sasuke can barely produce four Chidori on average before gassing out."
Naruto and Oscar giggled at the word gassing.
"He could manage one Rasengan at best. And sakura doesn't have the chakra reserves to attempt a regular A-rank jutsu, let alone the Rasengan." Kakashi said.
Sakura tried not to let that effect her. It was a simple fact that someone from a civilian background started with less chakra than someone born into a shinobi clan. But hearing that she couldn't even attempt a single attempt at the technique made something quiet and stubborn stir behind her ribs. Was there a way to increase her chakra reserves?
Naruto sighed, his shoulders dropping. "Damnit. I had this really cool image of us three hitting someone with a 'Team Seven Rasengan Barrage' at the Chunin Exams."
Everyone paused as that was actually a decent name compared to the naruto's nonsensical naming sense.
"I don't think it was a bad suggestion entirely." Kakashi said. "Training toward the Rasengan might still benefit both of them."
"I thought you just said we couldn't use it." Sasuke said.
"The full Rasengan may be out of reach for now. But the Rasengan is the pinnacle of shape manipulation. The training alone, even without reaching the completed form, would improve your shape manipulation considerably." Kakashi said.
"Yatta." Naruto jumped. "Actually, I think I have some ideas."
The three of them gave him their attention.
"Okay. Sakura, shape manipulation means you could change the form of your barriers. Maybe even move the chakra inside them the way the Rasengan spins. Turn a wall into something that rotates and pushes back against whatever hits it." Naruto said, pointing at the kunoichi.
Sakura thought the idea over carefully, thinking if it was theoretically possible.
Kakashi thought that a spinning barrier used as a counterforce sounded remarkably close to the Hyuga clan's Heavenly Rotation. Did Naruto know about rotation or was this a coincidence?
"Sasuke, you could reshape the Chidori with shape manipulation. Instead of a concentrated dagger of lightning chakra, pull it into a sword of lightning chakra." Naruto suggested.
"Everything leads back to swords with you." Sasuke said.
"Swords are awesome, dattebayo." Naruto said, pointing at Oscar who instantly produced a small crystal sword gripped in his tail. "You see that. That is what being awesome looks like."
"Hn." Sasuke said. He couldn't argue with any part of that, which was annoying. To avoid being one-upped entirely, the Uchiha straightened and said, "I have a suggestion for you."
"Yeah?"
"Try using the Blade of Wind on the ground beneath an opponent's feet. Break apart their footing before they can set it." Sasuke said.
"Good idea." Naruto nodded, already making clones. "Now then, follow Naruto-sensei. He will teach you the Rasengan."
"Do you actually know how to teach the Rasengan?" Kakashi asked, visibly amused.
"Of course. You take chakra and JUST DO IT." Naruto yelled, producing a spinning Rasengan in his palm like that explained anything.
"Yeah, no." Sasuke said, looking at Kakashi.
The jonin was already making clones to handle the two of them properly.
Naruto sat down in the dirt, deflated. Oscar climbed patted his arm.
"Sensei, should I learn the three jutsu before I try adding elements to the Rasengan?"
"Yes. Adding an element to the Rasengan is not going to be a simple process." Kakashi said.
"Another win for the Shadow Clone Jutsu then. I try until I get it, and when I get one the rest will follow." Naruto said.
"How many clones can you comfortably maintain?" Kakashi asked.
"Dunno." Naruto said.
"I am thinking you could leave behind four thousand. A thousand clones working on each element simultaneously." Kakashi said.
Naruto went quiet for a moment. He had never had reason to push that number before. But it was possible. If not, he had the Estus Flask, weed, and the Grass Crest Shield to help him regenerate his lost chakra quickly and make more.
"You think I can actually pull that off?"
"Naruto, before the Wave mission you had hundred times more chakra than me." Kakashi said. "After the Wave mission and the Uzumaki clan inheritance, you are closer to eight hundred times."
Naruto blinked slowly at that number like it was written in an alien language. Was it purely the Uzumaki inheritance, or had the stat increases played into it as well? He knew that raising his strength and intelligence stats had a compound effect on his chakra reserves. Maybe it was all of it together. The stats, the inheritance, whatever had changed in him after Lordran.
"If you use this method consistently, you could add an element to the Rasengan and surpass me." Kakashi said. There was something anxious in his voice when he said it.
"That's good, right?" Naruto asked, reading the tone.
"I just hope that surpassing me means you will be able to deal with Shimura Danzo."
The name made Naruto's heart drop.
"What do you mean, Sensei?"
Kakashi was quiet for a moment. The clone teaching Sasuke and Sakura in the background kept working. The real Kakashi looked out at the lake.
"The Hokage wanted to have this discussing with you."

Q: Why these three jutsu?
I actually set this up back in the Wave arc, when Naruto punished Kakashi for the whole trying-to-sneak-into-Lordran scheme and Kakashi ended up owing him three jutsu. I received a ton of great suggestions from you all since then, and the three I selected were shaped by some of the best ideas in the comments.
Now that you have seen the jutsu, let me know if you have ideas for unique variants. For example, Kakashi's Mud Wall has a dog motif to it. Naruto's could carry a dragon motif. Or his Wild Water Wave could evolve into something entirely his own rather than an average water release technique. Drop your ideas below.

Q: Why does Naruto have 800 times more chakra than Kakashi?
In chapter 315, Kakashi states that Naruto has four times his chakra. Without Yamato suppressing the Nine-Tails it would be one hundred times Kakashi's. So why does Dark Souls Naruto sit at eight hundred times?
This actually came from a comment that stuck with me. The argument was that DS1 Naruto's chakra reserves should scale upward alongside his Strength and Intelligence stats. The Naruto wiki confirms that chakra capacity increases through physical conditioning, which builds physical energy, and through meditation, which builds spiritual energy.
Naruto's Strength stat alone has brought him to the point where he can punch through a corpse without chakra. His Intelligence stat allowed him to conceptually grasp the Rasengan after a single viewing. Those are not normal human benchmarks. A body and mind operating at that level would produce proportionally greater chakra.
Add to that the awakening of his Uzumaki lineage, which carried its own massive stat increase, and the number climbs further.
So why eight hundred specifically?
Because the number eight is tied to dragons.
I have touched on the alchemical concept of the Rebis before, but the short version is this. The Rebis is the symbolic endpoint of alchemy. I have been developing my own ideas of how the dragons in Dark Souls are the alchemical rebis. The number eight represents the transition stage after the seven-step process is complete, the moment before the Philosopher's Stone is created. The Rebis is the living symbol of that stone.
