Captain's Log, Supplemental - Memory Fragment

King Eldric Roth recording (crystal archive)

Rothgard's northeastern glades - night of the waning crescent

The forest supports our stand.

Roots trap the enemy.

Fangs and axes strike hard.

We push back their advance.

The empire suffers losses.

The defense succeeds.

We survive.

The northeastern glades of Rothgard's elven woods remained dark under the waning crescent's faint light. Moonlight filtered through gaps in the thick canopy, casting irregular patches on the mossy ground. King Eldric Roth crouched behind a cluster of massive roots, sword held ready across his knees. His breath came steady, years of command keeping fatigue at bay despite the strain of constant defense. The air carried the heavy scent of damp soil and resin, with the subtle presence of life-aether in every branch and vine. He met Queen Eleanor's gaze across the root hollow, her cloaked form blending into the shadows as she prepared her call to the forest.

This Imperial group represented a serious threat. Lord Farhad Reza commanded them, his black armor polished and etched with silver dragons that caught stray light. He advanced at the front, posture arrogant under a plumed helm. Captain Jahan Shirazi walked beside him, crimson cloak moving as he built power, storm clouds forming overhead. Twelve drakonid warriors rode lesser fire-drakes that snorted and scraped the ground, lances tipped with glowing runes.

Captain Thorgrim Ironvein positioned himself next to Eldric, rune-axe gripped firm. The dwarf's braided beard held iron rings, and his eyes showed steady focus. "Strong force tonight, king. We have the ground advantage." Eldric kept his voice low. "And the pack. They move on my signal." The Lupari beastkin emerged from deeper shadows-a coordinated group of wolf-like warriors with gray and black fur for camouflage. Kael led them, broad and alert, curved blades ready. Sira stayed close, quick and precise, ears forward as she waited.

The Imperials moved forward along the trail, torches low but footsteps giving away their position. Eleanor initiated the ambush. Vines burst from the soil and wrapped around the fire-drake's legs, pulling taut. The beasts reared and roared, throwing riders as roots crushed scales. Rangers fired from the branches, arrows hitting armor gaps and dropping soldiers before they could react.

The Lupari pack attacked immediately. They flowed through the enemy ranks with speed, blades, and claws, targeting weak points to create chaos. Kael struck low, hamstringing a drakonid while teeth tore at exposed areas. Sira moved faster, slashing tendons and retreating before counterattacks landed, disrupting formation and drawing attention away from the main line. Farhad identified Eldric in the confusion and charged. "The failed king shows himself!"

Eldric stood and engaged, sword meeting Farhad's saber in a sharp clash. Sparks flew as blades locked. The noble used his mount's height for leverage, saber cutting quick arcs that Eldric blocked or dodged on uneven ground. Thorgrim protected the flank, axe breaking a drakonid lance and forcing the rider back.

Eleanor faced Jahan nearby. The mage sent lightning bolts at her position, striking the vine barrier she raised. She redirected the energy into the soil, roots absorbing it to grow stronger while illusions confused his aim.

Farhad dismounted when his fire-drake stumbled from a beastkin cut. He pressed on foot, saber thrusting low. Eldric countered with a hard riposte, blade finding a gap to wound the noble's thigh. Farhad grunted and swung wildly, grazing Eldric's shoulder. Sira leaped onto Farhad's back, blades driving deep between plates. The noble reacted fast, twisting to drive a recovered spear upward. The point caught her mid-air, impaling her body. She fell with a sharp gasp, blood spreading on her fur. Kael responded with a fierce charge, the pack intensifying attacks to avenge her.

Thorgrim joined Eldric directly, axe forcing Farhad to divide attention. Eldric bled from an arm cut but maintained pressure, feinting high to open the noble's guard low. Jahan increased his assault on Eleanor, combining fire and lightning in close bursts. Flames surrounded her, burning cloak and skin, but she held her ground, vines rising to contain the fire while her focus built for a stronger response.

Farhad drew a dagger for a final lunge, a guard's spear aiming at Eldric's side during an overextension. Kael intercepted, teeth clamping the wrist to deflect the thrust while his blade opened the guard's throat. Farhad choked on blood, staggering.

Thorgrim delivered the killing strike. His axe came down heavy, runes activating to shatter Farhad's remaining defense. The blade cut clean through the neck, ending the noble. Eldric lowered his sword, breathing hard as the last Imperials fled into the night. Eleanor dropped to one knee nearby, injured by Jahan's attacks, the fight won at a high cost. Thorgrim cleaned his axe on a fallen banner, voice rough but satisfied despite the loss of Sira. "We broke them, king. The line stands." The forest quieted, roots withdrawing into soil, survivors tending wounds under aether's marginal aid. Kael's pack gathered mournfully around Sira.

The defense held firm.

For now.
