"Dad, Mom asked me to bring you lunch!"
The boy held up the lunchbox and shouted to the porter on the pier, then tripped over the rope underfoot. He almost fell and spilled the lunchbox, but Shard, who was nearby, reached out to steady him and catch the flying lunchbox:
"Be careful."
He said to the boy.
The porter, wearing a short-sleeved shirt, hurriedly put down the sack he was carrying and ran over. Since his work was piece-rate, the supervisor frowned but didn't stop him.
"Newman, are you okay?"
The man asked his child, then embarrassedly thanked Shard:
"Thank you so much, sir."
He judged from Shard's attire that Shard didn't belong to the Dock Area, so he spoke with extra respect, while the boy was even more timid, pulling on his father's hand and hiding behind him.
Shard didn't mind it at all. He returned the lunchbox to the boy and then asked the man:
