Chapter 21 - Chapter 20: A Silent Child

The streets of Asakusa pulsed with life.

Lanterns swayed gently above the crowded road, their warm glow spilling across wooden stalls and passing figures. Merchants called out loudly, advertising their goods with practiced enthusiasm, while laughter and conversation blended into a constant hum that filled the air.

To most, it was lively.

To Akira — it was noise.

He walked through the crowd without speaking, his silver hair catching faint glimmers of light as people unknowingly moved aside for him. His presence was subtle, yet somehow… noticeable.

His eyes moved constantly.

Left.

Right.

Above.

Below.

Even without the system's map, his senses were sharp — far sharper than any ordinary human. Every shift in movement, every strange sound, every irregular heartbeat in the crowd… he noticed it all.

Then —

He stopped.

A scent.

Soft…

Floral…

Faint — but unmistakable.

Akira's gaze sharpened slightly.

"…Tamayo," he muttered under his breath.

It wasn't strong enough to pinpoint immediately, but it lingered in the air like a whisper. Calm. Controlled. Unlike the stench of ordinary demons.

He didn't move toward it.

Not yet.

Instead, he continued walking, committing the direction to memory.

If she was here… then something bigger was unfolding.

A sudden sound broke his focus.

Thud.

Then again.

Thud.

Akira's steps slowed.

His head turned slightly.

At the edge of a narrow alley, half-hidden by shadow, a man stood over something small — his arm rising and falling with careless force.

Another strike landed.

Akira's eyes narrowed.

A child.

He stepped closer, silent.

The man didn't notice.

Another hit.

Then another.

But the child —

Didn't scream.

Didn't cry.

Didn't even try to defend herself.

She simply stood there.

Still.

Empty.

Akira stopped.

Something about that… wasn't normal.

He watched closely.

Waiting.

Observing.

Nothing.

No tears.

No fear.

No anger.

Not even pain.

"…That's not normal," he murmured.

In an instant, he moved.

His figure blurred, vanishing from the ground and reappearing atop a nearby rooftop.

From above, the scene became clearer.

The man laughed quietly, raising his hand again —

Akira lifted his own.

"Lucy," he whispered. "Airsoft weapon."

A sleek firearm formed instantly in his grasp.

A faint interface flickered before his eyes.

[Ammo Type: Visible / Invisible]

He selected Invisible.

No sound.

No trace.

He aimed.

Steady.

Precise.

First shot.

The man's arm jerked violently, his grip breaking mid-motion.

"What—?!"

Second shot.

His legs buckled beneath him, collapsing instantly.

Third shot.

The man hit the ground, gasping, unable to understand what had just happened.

He looked around wildly.

"W-Who's there?!"

Silence.

Akira dropped down behind him.

No sound.

No warning.

Just presence.

The air shifted.

Heavy.

Cold.

The man froze.

His body refused to move.

Akira didn't raise his voice.

Didn't show anger.

Didn't even look at him directly.

"Leave."

One word.

Calm.

Absolute.

The man didn't argue.

Didn't question.

Didn't even look back.

He scrambled away, disappearing into the crowd like a fleeing animal.

Silence returned.

Akira turned.

The child remained exactly where she was.

Unmoving.

Unchanging.

He stepped closer.

Now he could see clearly.

Bruises.

Dirt.

Small frame.

Fragile.

But her eyes —

Empty.

No fear.

No relief.

Nothing.

"…What's your name?" Akira asked.

No response.

Not even a blink.

Akira crouched slightly, lowering himself to her level.

Still nothing.

"…You've stopped feeling, haven't you?"

A pause.

Then —

Her eyes shifted.

Just slightly.

That was enough.

Akira exhaled slowly.

"I see…"

Without another word, he gently lifted her into his arms.

She didn't resist.

Didn't react.

Didn't care.

Like a doll.

Akira turned and walked away from the alley.

Lolo Mo Inn

The door slid open.

"…Akira?"

Kanae stood there, her soft expression shifting the moment she saw the child.

"…Who is she?"

Akira stepped inside.

"Let's talk."

They sat.

The room was quiet.

Almost too quiet.

Akira gently placed the girl down.

She remained still.

Unresponsive.

Kanae watched her carefully.

"…She's not reacting."

"I found her being beaten," Akira said quietly.

"…And she didn't react."

Kanae's expression darkened.

Not anger.

Something deeper.

"…What do you want to do?" she asked.

Akira didn't answer immediately.

He looked at the child.

Then at Kanae.

"I want you to take care of her."

Kanae blinked.

"…You?"

A faint smile appeared.

"You brought her here, and now you're passing her to me?"

Akira didn't smile.

"I can protect her."

He paused.

"…But I can't give her a life."

Kanae froze.

"I'll be moving constantly. Fighting. Attracting danger."

"…If she stays with me, she'll become a target."

His voice softened.

"But you…"

Kanae's chest tightened.

"You can give her something I can't."

Silence filled the room.

Kanae sighed softly.

"…You always say things like that."

But she didn't refuse.

She walked over.

Knelt down.

Gently placed her hand on the girl's head.

"…From today onward… you're not alone."

No response.

But —

Her fingers moved.

Just slightly.

Akira watched quietly.

"…Her name is Kanao."

Kanae glanced back.

"…Kanao Tsuyuri?"

Akira nodded.

Kanae smiled faintly.

"…It suits her."

Akira turned toward the door.

"I'll leave her with you."

Kanae didn't stop him.

As he stepped out —

He paused.

"…Take care of her."

Kanae looked down at the silent girl beside her.

"…I will."

The door closed.

Inside the quiet room…

For the first time —

Kanao blinked.
