Ron had even started thinking about a new beginning with Vera. Even if there was no love between them, they could still coexist peacefully.
But all this just proved it was wishful thinking on his part. Vera had never once considered being with him; all her apparent meekness was just a prelude to her escape.
Vera dragged Lucy White out of the room, calling back apologetically, "Brother Ron, don't blame me. I've been pushed to this point. I have no other choice. I can't stay here and just wait to die. I have to leave."
The place was crawling with guards and booby traps. Seeing Vera emerge with a hostage, they all raised their guns at her. A single order was all it would take for Vera to be shot dead.
But no one dared to make a move. They all waited for Ron's command, afraid to act rashly. If they hurt Vera, they would face dire consequences.
"Vera, I'm giving you one last chance," Ron said. "Let Lucy go, and I might just let you live. Don't force my hand."
