Haedam Arts & International Academy — Main Building, Pre-Class
The bell hadn't rung yet.
Which meant one thing:
Controlled chaos.
Lockers slamming. Students rushing. Whispers trailing behind LUCENT and REBUS like invisible threads.
---
"Class in five," their manager's voice echoed faintly in memory.
Which translated to:
You have four minutes to breathe.
As the group moved through the corridor, Ashe slowed subtly. Not enough for most people to notice. But enough.
Jeremy noticed. Of course he did.
He leaned toward Gage.
"Watch this."
Gage smirked.
"Secret boyfriend duties."
Ashe shot them a look.
"Go."
Jeremy raised his hands.
"Disappearing."
---
Ashe turned into a side hallway.
Quieter.
Less crowded.
Designed for people who didn't want attention. Or couldn't afford it.
---
Behind the Stairwell
She was already there.
Leaning lightly against the wall.
Hands in her coat pockets.
Madigan.
She didn't smile when she saw him.
Not immediately.
Ashe did.
"You made it."
"I always do."
A beat.
Then—
"How was the flight?"
"Long. Loud. Jeremy exists."
Madigan exhaled a small laugh.
"Tragic."
The tension eased just slightly. Just enough.
Ashe stepped closer.
Not too close.
Just enough to feel real.
"You okay?"
Madigan held his gaze.
For a second—
she almost said it.
Instead—
"I'm fine."
A lie.
Clean.
Controlled.
Ashe didn't push. He never pushed. That was part of the problem.
He reached out slightly— then stopped.
Footsteps.
Close.
Too close.
Madigan's eyes shifted instantly.
"Someone's coming."
Ashe stepped back.
Distance restored.
Masks up.
Giselle Dubois turned the corner.
Her eyes scanned the hallway—
sharp enough to notice what others missed.
She saw— Ashe standing near the stairwell.
Alone.
Madigan had already moved just out of sight, pressed into the shadow between the wall and the corner.
Invisible if you weren't looking for her.
Giselle tilted her head slightly.
"You're skipping class already?"
Ashe didn't flinch.
"Just heading back."
She studied him for a moment then nodded.
"…Don't get caught."
She walked past.
But— she glanced once more.
Not at Ashe at the space behind him where something felt… off.
Then she kept walking.
Madigan exhaled slowly.
"…She almost saw me."
Ashe ran a hand through his hair.
"She didn't."
"Giselle notices things."
"So do you."
Madigan looked at him.
That almost made her smile.
She stepped forward again, closer this time.
Lower voice.
"Your contract."
Ashe's expression shifted slightly.
"…Yeah."
"My mom is pushing."
"I figured."
"She won't tell me why."
"She doesn't have to."
Madigan's eyes sharpened.
"You don't seem surprised."
"I'm not."
That answer lingered.
Too calm.
Too accepting.
Madigan searched his face.
"…You're okay with it?"
Ashe met her gaze fully now.
"No."
A beat.
"But I'm not scared of it either."
That unsettled her more than fear would have.
The Bell Rings
Reality Returns.
Madigan stepped back.
Distance again.
Walls again.
"I should go."
"Yeah."
She turned— then paused.
"…You looked happy."
The words slipped out before she could stop them.
Ashe blinked.
"What?"
Madigan shook her head.
"Nothing."
She walked away before he could ask more.
---
Meanwhile — Operation: Hannah Defense
Back in the main hallway—
Jayden looked like a man under siege.
"JAYDEN!"
He flinched.
"…No."
Hannah approached at full speed, cookie box in hand.
"Try this one! I improved the recipe!"
Jayden grabbed Romeo's sleeve.
"Help me."
Romeo calmly removed his hand.
"No."
"You're heartless."
"I'm experienced."
Then— two figures stepped in.
Perfect timing.
Ji Hye and Ji Suk.
Romeo's cousins.
Agents of chaos.
Ji Suk grinned.
"Need assistance?"
Jayden nodded like his life depended on it.
"Yes."
Ji Hye stepped forward smoothly.
"Hannah, right?"
Hannah beamed.
"Yes!"
"We heard about your cookies."
Jayden blinked.
Traitors.
Ji Suk added—
"We'd love to try them."
Hannah gasped.
"Really?!"
"Of course."
They gently redirected her away. Far Away.
Jayden watched them go.
Speechless.
"…I owe you my life."
Romeo shrugged.
"Family service."
Jeremy whispered to Gage—
"They sacrificed themselves."
Gage nodded solemnly.
"Heroes."
---
As students filed into class— different tensions moved quietly beneath the surface:
Madigan walking alone, thoughts heavier than before
Ashe standing still for a moment longer than he should
Giselle thinking… just a little too much
Shantel noticing small things she couldn't name
Jayden surviving another day
And somewhere else—...
