I sat next to my mother on one of the plush sofas in the large sitting room of the safe house. Noah’s aunts were standing in the center of the room, telling us some gripping stories about their childhoods.
“Harriet was always the instigator among us girls,” Marguerite was saying, throwing her sister a fond but amused look.
“Only because you two tended to be so annoyingly obedient at times,” Harriet argued, but she threw both her sisters a similarly affectionate look.
“I feel as though I was the only one who truly wished to stay out of trouble,” Genevieve added despairingly, but she was smiling as well.
We all giggled at the women’s stories, enthralled by their fun personalities and gifted storytelling skills. I felt like it warmed all of our hearts to see the three so happy to have one another.
