Chapter 14: Find Her
The first thing Duke Edran did, after dispatching the knights, was send a rider to House Ashveil.
He did it without thinking about it — or rather, he did it the way he did everything in the first hour after reading that letter, which was with the cold, mechanical precision of a man who had shut every feeling behind a door and was operating entirely on the part of him that knew how to act when action was the only thing left.
The message was short. Five sentences. The last one read: I believe she is being taken to Duke Ashter. If you are willing, I would be grateful for House Ashveil's assistance.
He didn't know if it would reach Duke Ashveil in time to matter.
He sent it anyway.
The rider reached the Ashveil estate three hours after the carriage had left House Vaelmoor.
Duke Ashveil read the message once. Set it down. Picked up his coat.
"Father," Alaric said, from the doorway of the study — still dressed, because Alaric rarely slept before midnight, a habit his father had long since stopped trying to correct. "What's happened?"
Duke Ashveil looked at his son.
He thought about a five year old in a blue dress, sitting on a library floor, searching every shelf for a book she had no reason to care about. He thought about the way she'd said rooms can change again, if something changes them back, with the particular certainty of someone who had learned things the hard way and was still, stubbornly, choosing to believe them.
"The Vaelmoor girl," Duke Ashveil said. "She's been taken."
Something happened to Alaric's face.
It was quick — so quick that most people would have missed it entirely, smoothed away as fast as it appeared beneath the composure he'd spent three years building into something impenetrable. But Duke Ashveil was not most people, and he had been watching his son's face for eight years, and what he saw in that single unguarded moment was something he hadn't seen there in a very long time.
Fear.
Not the abstract, assessed kind of fear that Alaric applied to strategic problems. The immediate, personal kind — the kind that happened when something that mattered was suddenly in danger.
"Where?" Alaric said.
"We don't know yet. Ashter's territory, most likely." Duke Ashveil was already moving toward the door. "I'm sending riders."
"I'm coming."
"Alaric—"
"I'm coming," Alaric said again, and his voice had gone to that particular flat certainty that Duke Ashveil recognized, with a complicated feeling he didn't have time to examine, as something he heard in his own voice sometimes. "She's— she came to my library. She found the book. She—" he stopped, and the composure flickered again, briefly. "She's five years old, Father. I'm coming."
Duke Ashveil looked at his son for a moment.
"Get your coat," he said.
The night was cold and moonless, which was, Vivienne thought, entirely appropriate.
She had stopped crying somewhere around the second hour — not because she felt better, but because she had run out of tears and her body had simply, practically, moved on to the next stage, which appeared to be a kind of exhausted, hollow quiet. She sat curled against the carriage wall, as far from Duchess Serine as the space allowed, watching the darkness outside with eyes that felt scraped raw.
Her wrist ached. She didn't look at it.
Duchess Serine had not spoken since her last attempt at explanation. She sat across from Vivienne with her hands folded in her lap, her composure almost fully reassembled — almost, but not quite, the cracks visible in small ways that Vivienne would have noticed even if she hadn't spent five years learning to read this particular face. The way her hands weren't entirely still. The way her gaze kept moving to the carriage window, checking the road, checking the dark.
She's nervous, Vivienne thought, with the distant, mechanical part of her that never quite stopped observing even when everything else had given up. She expected this to be easier. She expected me not to fight.
Or she expected no one to come after us.
The thought was cold and clear as a river stone: she was wrong about that.
She had to be wrong about that.
"We're nearly there," Duchess Serine said quietly, not quite looking at Vivienne. "Duke Ashter's estate is another hour. Maybe less."
Vivienne said nothing.
"He's not — he's not a bad man," Duchess Serine said, and there was something almost desperate in it, the sound of someone trying to convince themselves as much as the person they were talking to. "Whatever you've heard about him. He can give us things your father never could. A different life. A — "
"I don't want a different life," Vivienne said.
Her voice came out flat and exhausted, scraped clean of everything except the truth underneath.
"I know you think that," Duchess Serine said.
"I know it," Vivienne said. "It's not the same thing."
Duchess Serine's hands tightened in her lap. She didn't answer.
It was Aldous who figured out the route.
Not the knights — the knights had fanned out across every road, which was right, which was the correct tactical decision, except that there were nine major roads out of the Vaelmoor estate and only so many riders, and finding one carriage in the dark on nine roads was the kind of problem that took longer than Duke Edran wanted it to.
Aldous figured it out because Aldous had worked for House Vaelmoor for thirty years and had, in that time, quietly catalogued approximately everything about everyone in the household, including the fact that Duchess Serine had, over the past year, received a significant number of letters from a courier service that operated primarily out of the eastern district — and the eastern road out of the Vaelmoor estate was the only one that connected, without passing through any of the major towns, directly to Duke Ashter's territory.
He told Duke Edran this at approximately the same time Duke Edran was staring at the map spread across his study desk with the expression of a man trying to think through something his emotions kept interrupting.
"The eastern road," Duke Edran said.
"Yes, my lord. If she took it immediately — which, given the timing, she must have — she'd be perhaps two hours ahead of us. Maybe less, with a carriage at speed."
"Can we catch them?"
Aldous hesitated. "On horseback, through the night — possibly, my lord. But it would be close."
"Send word to the eastern riders," Duke Edran said, already moving toward the door. "And tell Aldous to saddle my horse."
"My lord," Aldous said, carefully, "you haven't ridden at speed in—"
"Saddle my horse," Duke Edran said quietly, "Aldous."
Aldous went to saddle the horse.
The Ashveil riders met the Vaelmoor contingent at the crossroads two miles east of the estate — twelve Ashveil men, hard riders in the dark, and at their head, on a horse considerably too large for him but managing it with grim, white-knuckled determination, Alaric Ashveil.
Duke Edran, who had ridden through the night with his jaw set and his heart somewhere in his throat, pulled up at the crossroads and looked at the eight year old sitting rigid on his oversized horse, dressed for riding rather than bed, his dark hair wind-whipped, his amber eyes lit with the torchlight and something fiercer beneath it.
"Young Master Ashveil," Duke Edran said, and there wasn't time for anything more formal than that. "Your father?"
"Coordinating the southern approach with your knights, my lord," Alaric said, in the clipped, precise tone of someone reporting information rather than explaining himself. "He said the eastern road was most likely. I said I'd ride ahead."
"You rode ahead," Duke Edran repeated, taking in the sight of an eight year old who had, apparently, outpaced twelve adult riders to the crossroads.
"She's five years old," Alaric said, and the clipped precision cracked, just slightly, at the edges. "And she's been in that carriage for hours. I wasn't going to wait."
Duke Edran looked at him for a long moment.
He thought, fleetingly, of a letter on his desk — you'll understand, someday, why this had to happen — and of the specific, devastating wrongness of someone deciding another person's life for them.
He thought of Vivienne, at five years old, telling him: people are supposed to ask.
"Eastern road," Duke Edran said, and turned his horse. "Ride."
Vivienne heard them before she saw the torches.
Hoofbeats — multiple sets, getting louder, coming from behind the carriage rather than ahead. She sat up straighter against the carriage wall, her heart doing something sudden and painful in her chest.
Duchess Serine heard it too.
She was at the window immediately — and whatever she saw there made her expression do something Vivienne had never seen it do before. Not the cold calculation, not the careful composure. Something younger and rawer and — afraid.
"Faster," Duchess Serine said sharply to the driver, rapping on the carriage wall. "Drive faster—"
"The road is dark, my lady, if I push the horses any harder we'll—"
"I said faster!"
The carriage lurched. Vivienne grabbed the seat, her wrist throbbing at the sudden movement. Outside, the sound of hoofbeats got louder — faster — and then there were torches visible through the rear window, orange light bobbing in the dark, getting closer with the speed of horses unencumbered by a heavy carriage.
They came, Vivienne thought, and the hollow exhaustion in her chest cracked open into something that hurt in an entirely different way — sharp and warm and overwhelming. They came for me.
"Stop the carriage."
The voice came from outside — calm, carrying easily over the thunder of hoofbeats. Duke Edran's voice. And underneath it, barely audible but unmistakably there, the younger edge of someone else's voice calling out a command to the Ashveil riders flanking the left side of the road.
Alaric.
The carriage slowed. The driver — faced with armed riders closing from both sides of the road, torches turning the dark into something bright and inescapable — made the only decision that made practical sense and pulled the horses to a stop.
Duchess Serine sat very still.
The carriage door opened.
Duke Edran looked, in the torchlight, like a man who had ridden through the night on something fiercer than horseback — his coat was dusty from the road, his hair wind-disordered, and his expression, when the door opened and the torchlight fell on the interior of the carriage, was something Vivienne had never seen from him before.
He looked at her — at the tear-tracks dried on her cheeks, the exhaustion, the way she was holding her injured wrist against her chest without quite realizing she was doing it — and something in his face did something she couldn't describe.
It broke. Very quietly. Very briefly. Just for a moment.
"Vivienne," he said, and his voice was rough in a way it had never been before.
And Vivienne — who had held herself together through hours of fear and grief and the terrible, hollow quiet of having no one — burst into tears.
Not the scared, desperate crying from before. Something different. The kind of crying that happened when the worst thing was over and the relief was too big to hold.
"Daddy," she sobbed, and was across the carriage and through the door and against his chest before she'd consciously decided to move — his arms catching her, pulling her in, one large hand cupping the back of her head the way he had in the dark of the nursery all those months ago — except this time he held her like he was never going to let go, and the hand that had been so careful and clumsy and uncertain then wasn't uncertain at all now.
"I have you," Duke Edran said, quietly, into her hair. "I have you. You're safe."
Vivienne held on with everything she had, her face pressed into his coat, and cried until she couldn't anymore.
Duchess Serine was helped out of the carriage by two knights, with the kind of careful, impersonal courtesy that managed to communicate very clearly that it was not a request.
She stood in the torchlight — composed, still, her chin lifted — and looked at her husband holding their daughter like something precious he'd almost lost, and her expression was, in the end, unreadable.
Not guilty. Not defiant. Simply — done, in some way. Resolved. Like a woman who had made her choice and had arrived, finally, at the point where the consequences of it were simply a thing that existed, rather than a thing that could still be avoided.
She looked at Vivienne once — just briefly, meeting tear-blurred eyes over Duke Edran's shoulder.
She didn't say anything.
Neither did Vivienne.
There wasn't, Vivienne thought, anything left to say.
It was Alaric who noticed the wrist.
He had ridden up alongside the carriage when it stopped, and had been sitting very still on his too-large horse, watching Duke Edran and Vivienne with an expression that had gone entirely unguarded in the way it only ever did in moments he didn't realize he was being observed — something about his face that was enormously relieved and enormously young, simultaneously.
When Duke Edran finally, reluctantly, shifted his hold on Vivienne to check her over properly — a father's instinctive inventory, face, hands, is she hurt, is anything wrong — Alaric saw it too.
The wrist.
The redness, visible even in torchlight, spreading from where Duchess Serine's grip had dug in for hours. Already beginning, at the edges, to shade into the darker purple-green of bruising.
Alaric's expression did something.
It was a small thing. A shift in the jaw. A particular quality in the amber eyes — not the cold, composed assessment of someone cataloguing a problem, but something younger and rawer and considerably more honest.
"Your wrist," Duke Edran said, low and careful, cradling Vivienne's hand with a gentleness that made something in her chest ache.
"It's okay," Vivienne said, reflexively.
"It's not," said Alaric, from his horse, and his voice was very flat and very quiet. He was looking at the bruising with an expression that Vivienne, exhausted as she was, couldn't quite read — except that it had nothing to do with coldness and everything to do with something he wasn't saying.
"It'll heal," Vivienne said, looking up at him.
Alaric looked at her.
"I know," he said. "It still shouldn't have happened."
He said it the same way he said everything — flat, certain, entirely without decoration. But underneath it, in the way he was looking at her wrist and then at her face and then away into the dark, was something he hadn't said and wasn't going to say, at eight years old, in the middle of a road at night with their respective fathers six feet away.
Vivienne understood it anyway.
"Thank you," she said quietly. "For coming."
Alaric looked at her again.
"You found my book," he said, after a moment. "The one with the tree."
"I know," Vivienne said.
"That meant—" he paused. "It mattered. That you looked."
"I know," Vivienne said, again. Softer this time.
They looked at each other in the torchlight — five and eight years old, exhausted and wind-chilled and standing in the middle of a road in the dark — and something passed between them that didn't have a name yet. Something too new to be named and too real to be anything other than what it was.
The beginning of a promise neither of them had made yet.
The ride home took the rest of the night.
Duke Edran kept Vivienne in front of him on his horse — wrapped in his coat, held against his chest, her injured wrist carefully cradled — and didn't say much for most of the journey. He didn't need to. The hand that stayed steady around her, the heartbeat she could hear beneath his coat, the fact that he had ridden through the dark and found her — all of it said more than anything he might have put into words.
Vivienne dozed, somewhere in the second hour — exhausted beyond the point of staying awake — and was only dimly aware, in the soft drift between sleep and consciousness, of her father's arm tightening slightly when she went still. As though making sure she was there.
As though, having almost lost her, he wasn't quite ready to believe she wasn't going anywhere.
I'm here, Daddy, she thought, or maybe half-dreamed. I'm not going anywhere.
The horses moved steady and slow through the last dark hours of the night, torchlight bobbing on the road ahead, Ashveil riders and Vaelmoor knights riding side by side with the particular, easy solidarity of people who had just done something difficult together.
And at the center of it all, on a horse moving at the careful pace of someone carrying something precious, Duke Edran Vaelmoor rode home with his daughter, and did not look back once.
