Chapter 3 - chapter 3 new beginnings

Time skip: 5 years later.

The world has rebuilt. Breddy, Shijiki, and the former Walmart manager all survived and started new lives. People believe the zombie outbreak is over.

Breddy has a house, a steady job, and has finally found peace. Shijiki has a family. The old Walmart has been abandoned and fenced off as a reminder of what happened.

Then... strange news starts appearing.

People disappear in nearby towns.

Hospitals report patients attacking nurses.

The government calls them "isolated incidents."

Breddy notices the same bite marks from five years ago.

One night, his phone rings.

Shijiki:

"Breddy... turn on the news. Right now."

The TV shows a city under quarantine.

A reporter screams as people begin attacking each other on live television.

The broadcast cuts to black.

Breddy slowly opens the closet where he kept one thing from the first outbreak...

...the combat knife he swore he'd never need again.

He quietly says,

"No... not again."

-Echoes of the Dead-

The television remained black.

Silence filled Breddy's living room.

He slowly reached for the remote and switched channels.

Every station showed the same thing.

"EMERGENCY BROADCAST."

"Citizens are advised to remain inside their homes. Reports of violent attacks have spread across several cities. Authorities ask everyone to stay calm while emergency responders investigate."

Breddy stared at the screen.

"...They're lying."

His phone buzzed.

Shijiki: "You saw it?"

Breddy: "Yeah."

Shijiki: "They're back."

Breddy looked out his window. His quiet neighborhood looked peaceful. Children rode bicycles. Neighbors mowed their lawns.

Everything looked... normal.

Until...

A woman screamed.

Breddy rushed outside.

Across the street, a man had collapsed onto the sidewalk. Blood poured from his neck while another person knelt over him, biting into his shoulder.

People froze.

Someone shouted.

"What the hell is he doing?!"

The attacker slowly lifted his head.

His pale gray eyes locked onto the crowd.

His mouth dripped with blood.

Then...

He charged.

Panic erupted.

Cars crashed trying to escape.

Parents grabbed their children.

People ran in every direction.

Breddy didn't hesitate.

"GET INSIDE!" he yelled.

He slammed his front door shut just as pounding fists echoed against it.

Another vibration came from his phone.

Shijiki: "I'm coming to your house. Don't leave."

Before Breddy could answer...

The power went out.

The entire neighborhood disappeared into darkness.

Only distant screams echoed through the night.

Breddy walked into his garage.

Covered beneath an old tarp sat a large metal storage chest.

He unlocked it.

Inside rested the gear from five years ago.

The combat knife.

The old radio.

The blood-stained tactical vest.

He ran his fingers across the worn handle of the knife.

"I prayed I'd never have to use you again."

He strapped the knife to his belt.

Outside...

Something scratched against the front door.

Then another scratch.

Then dozens.

The dead had found him.

– The Safe House-

The scratching never stopped.

It became pounding.

Then...

BANG!

BANG!

BANG!

The front door shook violently.

Breddy backed away, gripping his combat knife.

"They're stronger than before..."

His phone buzzed one last time.

Shijiki: "I'm almost there. Don't open the door unless it's me."

The signal died.

"No..."

The cell towers had gone offline.

Outside, tires screeched.

A pickup truck slammed into a mailbox before crashing into a parked car.

The driver stumbled out, covered in blood.

He pounded on Breddy's front door.

"PLEASE! LET ME IN!"

Behind him...

More than twenty zombies poured into the street.

They weren't walking.

They were running.

The man's screams echoed through the neighborhood as the horde dragged him to the ground.

Breddy looked away.

"There was nothing I could do."

Suddenly...

HONK! HONK!

A familiar truck skidded into his driveway.

Shijiki jumped out, carrying a baseball bat and a backpack.

"Breddy!"

Breddy unlocked the back door.

"Hurry!"

Shijiki rushed inside just as three zombies crashed into the garage door.

Both men shoved heavy shelves against the entrances.

The house fell silent.

For a moment...

They caught their breath.

Shijiki dropped his backpack onto the kitchen table.

"I raided a sporting goods store on my way here."

Inside were supplies:

- Flashlights

- Batteries

- First-aid kits

- Bottled water

- Energy bars

- A hunting hatchet

- Two boxes of ammunition

Breddy frowned.

"Ammo?"

Shijiki slowly reached deeper into the bag.

He pulled out a handgun wrapped in a towel.

"I was hoping I'd never touch one again."

Breddy nodded.

Neither of them wanted another war.

The emergency radio suddenly crackled to life.

"Attention... this is the Florida Emergency Response Network..."

Static interrupted the message.

"If anyone can hear this... evacuation centers have fallen... repeat... do NOT travel to public shelters..."

More static.

"Military forces are retreating... survivors should avoid large cities..."

The broadcast ended.

Silence filled the room.

Shijiki looked at Breddy.

"So..."

"What now?"

Breddy walked to the window.

The neighborhood was burning.

Smoke rose into the night sky.

Hundreds of zombies wandered through the streets.

He took a deep breath.

"We survived one outbreak..."

He tightened the strap on his vest.

"...now we survive the second."

- The Broadcast -

Morning came, but the sun brought no comfort.

The neighborhood looked like a battlefield.

Smoke drifted through the streets. Abandoned cars blocked intersections. Several houses burned unchecked while zombies wandered between them, searching for movement.

Breddy stood at the living room window with a pair of binoculars.

"...No survivors."

Shijiki finished boarding up the last window.

"We can't stay here forever."

Before Breddy could answer, the emergency radio crackled again.

"Attention all survivors..."

The signal was weak, but clear enough to understand.

"This is Captain Michael Hayes of the Florida National Guard. If anyone is receiving this broadcast, a temporary evacuation zone has been established at Patrick Space Force Base. We cannot guarantee safety, but we are accepting survivors until further notice."

Static.

"Avoid Interstate 95. The highway has been overrun. Use back roads if possible."

Then...

"And one more thing..."

The captain's voice grew quieter.

"These infected... they're changing."

Breddy and Shijiki looked at each other.

Changing?

The broadcast continued.

"We've encountered infected displaying unusual behavior. Some appear to remember familiar places. Others gather in large groups instead of wandering alone. We don't know why."

The transmission ended.

Silence.

Shijiki broke it first.

"You don't think..."

"I do," Breddy replied. "If they're evolving, this outbreak is worse than the last one."

Suddenly...

A loud crash echoed from outside.

Both men rushed to the window.

A city bus had slammed into a power pole two blocks away.

Its doors slowly folded open.

No one stepped out.

Then...

One zombie emerged.

Another.

Then ten.

Then fifty.

Within seconds, the street filled with a massive horde.

The zombies didn't spread out.

They moved together.

Like a pack.

One of them suddenly stopped.

It slowly turned its head toward Breddy's house.

The others followed.

Dozens of lifeless eyes locked onto the same target.

"They know we're here..." Shijiki whispered.

The first zombie let out a deep, chilling growl.

The entire horde charged.

Breddy grabbed his backpack.

"Forget staying hidden."

He loaded the handgun.

"We're leaving. Right now."

As the front fence collapsed under the weight of the horde, the two survivors ran through the back door toward the woods behind the neighborhood.

Behind them...

Hundreds of footsteps thundered across the street.

The hunt had begun.
