The work was very relaxed, and many people privately said to her that bar counter employees either had connections or were favored by the manager. And indeed, there were rumors that the manager intended to promote Crossley Gibson to a team leader. However, to convince the others, she had to first pass a month-long probationary period, which was the bar's rule without exceptions.
The 1982 bar had a very serious class distinction; the lower three floors were for ordinary consumption, while the fourth floor and above were high-end consumption areas. If you didn't bring enough money, you couldn't even get through the door.
