Since this was the first time Crossley Gibson came downstairs since moving in, the servants cleaning the hall all stopped their work and turned their heads to look at her.
Their gazes varied—some were inquisitive, some curious, some ambiguous... countless glances mixed together, making Crossley feel uncomfortable all over.
After breakfast, Crossley put a hat on her daughter, and then the two of them headed out with their drawing tools.
They went to the garden, where Crossley found a shady spot, laid out a picnic cloth on the grass, and the mother and daughter lay on the cloth drawing. Crossley taught her daughter how to draw flowers, trees, and the blue sky.
The little girl was very happy, her expression focused, and she painted the whole morning.
As the sun became more scorching, Crossley quickly took her daughter back to the Villa House, and in the afternoon they painted on the sofa in the master bedroom.
