Eccar had encountered something like this before.

Eccar had only recently met Erend back then. He had decided to help him and the Elves deal with the threat of the Great Calamity.
Together, they drew the Great Calamity's attention so it would not spread across the entire world but remain focused on the Elf Kingdom alone. There, Erend, Eccar, and the Elf warriors were able to fight the Great Calamity with their full attention.
They defeated the Great Calamity.
Only then did they discover that he had once been a Dragonborn who had become corrupted and decided to conquer worlds instead of protecting them.
Later, they met the Ashen Tempest Dragon, their Dragonborn ancestor, while saving another world from a different threat.
