[Chapter Size: 2800 Words.]
Third Person POV.
Westeros.
...
...
It was at that moment that the heart trees throughout all Seven Kingdoms began to glow. Many members of the Night's Watch and the alliance of the kingdoms' armies, who were still clearing the bodies of the dead north of the Wall, were the first to notice the light emerging from the heart tree.
In Winterfell, the direwolves immediately became restless, their howls echoing through the godswood. Some of the Children of the Forest who had remained in Winterfell ran to the godswood to see what was happening. At the same time, several images began to spread across all of Westeros.
People noticed that the trees near them had suddenly begun to glow, causing a certain amount of chaos.
Then, an immense radiance emerged above the heart tree until it formed an image, showing the Night King standing before Daemon, just before the battle between the two began.
The news spread quickly. Messengers rushed to the Wall to inform everyone. Daenerys immediately mounted her dragon and flew over the Wall, while the most important figures left the Wall to see what was happening. After all, the king had given a speech saying he needed to deal with the last Night King.
Soon, a crowd that continued to grow as the news spread south of the Wall surrounded the heart tree, watching the image before them.
In Winterfell, everyone also stopped inside the godswood. Commoners throughout Westeros now watched the scene, whether at the Red Keep, in Dorne, the Reach, the Westerlands, the Riverlands, the Stormlands, the Vale, or the North itself, wherever there was still a heart tree.
Then, Daemon charged forward, raising his sword.
The battle began.
The clash of swords left everyone in shock. Even Barristan Selmy, in Winterfell, swallowed hard. It was far beyond his own level. He doubted that even Arthur Dayne, a man even stronger than himself, could fight that creature the way Daemon was doing in the images.
Meanwhile, Daemon began his transformation. His body started radiating an intense energy, creating a kind of armor formed from ethereal light, taking on a draconic shape. Very few had ever seen him use that ability.
The blows intensified rapidly. People could only make out blurred figures colliding with one another, the clash of the two swords, and the confrontation between heat, light, cold, and darkness.
Daemon had no idea that Meridia had allowed the entire world to witness his final battle against the Night King. Had he realized it at that moment, he would have said she was trying to promote him as a hero to the entire world.
And, in a way, she was succeeding.
Immediately, people began cheering for him. Daenerys kept her hands clasped together, praying that he would win, while countless men, whether from the Night's Watch, the Free Folk, or the united armies of Westeros and Essos, shouted his name before the heart trees, now surrounded by massive crowds. The three dragons roared and flew through the sky above the crowd and the tree.
In Winterfell, Arya cheered, jumping with joy. Rickon also watched attentively alongside everyone else. Val held her pregnant belly beside her sister, while Lucis stood nervously off to one side.
Even little Aegon was brought to the godswood. He looked at the images in confusion, unable to understand that the man before him was his father. Even so, perhaps it would be a moment he would never forget, one that would remain with him in the future, even if only as fragmented memories.
Barristan Selmy also cheered for his king beside the prince.
In any case, the battle continued for at least five minutes. Neither of them showed the slightest sign of exhaustion, relentlessly exchanging blows without pause.
It seemed that any strike either of them landed would be fatal. Yet both possessed abnormal abilities, preventing any opening while constantly trying to surpass each other with their inhuman strength.
Then, the unexpected happened. In the middle of the battle, the Night King simply let go of his sword.
No... It was worse than that. He had lost both of his hands.
He did not even have time to realize that the sword was still floating in the air when his chest was struck by Daemon. The blow also severed one of his forearms, which he had raised to defend himself, as the blade completely pierced the Night King's body, emerging through his back.
The radiance of Dawnbreaker intensified. The Night King barely had time to react. He only widened his eyes slightly before exploding into an intense golden light.
Moments later, his body began to crack apart until it shattered into countless fragments of ice scattered throughout the chamber.
Daemon withdrew his sword and sighed, looking at the pieces of the Night King spread across the floor.
Even his sword shattered, and a few seconds later, all that remained were the golden steel and a crown of ice.
"Well... I suppose that's enough proof that this war is over," Daemon muttered, still having no idea that all of Westeros had witnessed his battle.
In any case, he realized there was no trace of necromantic energy left. He then undid his transformation, causing the entire ethereal armor to vanish as he sheathed Dawnbreaker.
Afterward, he walked over to the shattered sword, picked up the crown of ice, and finally left the cave.
At that very moment, all the heart trees returned to normal.
But throughout Westeros, people were already celebrating. Even many commoners who had once feared Daemon because they only knew the stories of how he had devastated several kingdoms near their lands before becoming king felt inspired after witnessing that battle. There were also many who had never believed in the monsters of the North, thinking they had been invented to create alarm after he seized the throne, but they realized in the end that it was not as they had believed.
Daemon was like a legendary hero wielding magic to fight against evil. And this was no story—they had witnessed it with their own eyes.
Outside, Daemon found Odahviing, who confirmed that he had already destroyed the undead dragon after reducing it to ashes with his flames.
Daemon simply nodded, mounted the dovah dragon, and began the journey back south. There was no point in resting in a place like that.
They traveled for hours until they finally returned to the Wall. However, Daemon was caught completely by surprise.
A crowd was already waiting for him, applauding his arrival.
"What's going on?" he asked in surprise as he landed outside Castle Black. Odahviing also remained silent, just as confused as he was.
Daemon immediately questioned the first man who came to greet him. "What happened?"
"My king... The heart trees... I think all of them, from the Gift to those north of the Wall, showed the image of your battle hours ago..."
Daemon was confused. He tried to imagine who could have done such a thing, but he did not find the idea absurd. It was certainly one of the Daedric Princes... Perhaps Princess Meridia herself had done it to raise the people's morale.
"Well... It's not a bad thing to receive the help of a deity, is it?" he murmured at last.
He then made his way toward the Wall, where he was welcomed by his wife. Everyone had already celebrated extensively the day before. Things were still being organized at the Wall, but that night was also filled with great feasts. Now, everyone raised a toast to the king who had defeated the Night King, as they all called him at that moment.
Daemon could not help but show a faint smile. It was already the middle of the night. Daenerys slept naked beside him, covered only by a blanket.
His thoughts, however, turned to what would happen from then on. There were no more great enemies left. Only political matters remained.
Certainly, he still had a promise to fulfill to the Daedric Princess.
She practically wanted a new religion devoted to herself. At least, her intentions seemed pure: to improve that world, evil by its very nature. Even if it also increased her own power, it was still better to follow her path than that of the others. At the very least, she understood how evil that world was, and Daemon was also willing to work to make it a better place.
"So be it..." he murmured.
Daenerys mumbled softly beside him before opening her eyes and seeing him sitting on the bed. "Can't you sleep?" she asked.
Daemon simply looked at her as he ran his fingers across her face. "It's nothing... I'm just thinking."
"Thinking about what?" she asked, still sleepy.
He simply lay back down beside her, wrapping his arms around her. "About the future. But it's nothing, my love."
"But I think our future can wait until tomorrow. Let's get some sleep." Daemon smiled, preventing her from asking any more questions as he pulled her closer.
In the end, the news spread quickly. Far faster than any raven could have carried it. Throughout every region of Westeros, people began telling one another about what they had seen in the heart trees.
It was only natural that every region was already awaiting the return of its men. With the Night King destroyed in that battle, everyone was finally safe.
The Free Folk asked to return to their settlements in the Gift. The region would once again be populated by several groups, as Daemon had no intention of leaving the entire area under the rule of a single leader.
He divided the Gift into three parts. He would not hand everything over to Mance; Mance would receive the Boltons' lands. The Free Folk leaders certainly should not concentrate so much power in the North, and dividing the region into three would also reassure the northern nobles. He also intended to grant the western portion to House Mormont because of their support.
In any case, with the winter and the devastation caused by the White Walkers, the lands beyond the Wall had become even more hostile and difficult to inhabit.
Those who wished to return could do so, either at that moment or after the winter. Around forty thousand people were willing to return to the lands of their ancestors. Even though the southern lands were better, many still had deep ties to the North, and that should be respected.
Daemon was not concerned about it. He gave a speech in the city, thanking everyone and stating that every war they had fought had existed so that this day of victory could come to pass.
To the Free Folk, Daemon could already be seen as a hero. In the rest of the kingdoms, however, if he had not commanded armies, troops, and allies, instead destroying everything by himself, the situation would have been different. He might have been seen more as a demon than as a conqueror if he had conquered everything alone.
A single man destroying entire armies was something that would make any kingdom obey him out of fear. The real problem would come after his death. With his descendants, he certainly did not want to leave behind a country ruled solely through fear.
In the end, Daemon thanked the Free Folk because he acknowledged that, without them, none of this would have been achieved either.
Once some reforms had been organized, the Free Folk returned to settle the region while helping reorganize the ships on both sides. The armies of the Reach and the Westerlands returned aboard the ships stationed in the west, while most of the troops boarded the ships in the east. The people of the Vale, the Crownlands, the Stormlands, and Dorne would also depart for their homes, while their regional fleets returned to the other side of the continent.
In any case, Daemon left ample resources at the Wall so that the Night's Watch could continue to function. Although there was no longer any real reason for its existence, it would still serve as a suitable destination for criminals.
Daemon also intended to reform part of the justice system. Just because someone had stolen a few eggs, a loaf of bread, or some milk did not mean they should be sent to the Night's Watch or even lose an arm. In many cases, he considered the punishments imposed by certain lords to be unjust.
At the same time, crimes such as rape and murder should not give the condemned the option of joining the Night's Watch. To Daemon, execution was the most appropriate punishment for such men, provided there was proper proof that the criminal had indeed committed the crime.
Daemon remained at the Wall for a while longer. Daenerys returned to Winterfell riding her dragon after everything had been organized. Once he had finished his own affairs, Daemon departed for Winterfell.
Before leaving, he bid farewell to Jeor Mormont, the Lord Commander, and to his two uncles, Benjen and Ned. The latter would remain in the Night's Watch, serving for the rest of his life.
There were other faces who would also remain there. Tyrion and Tommen. They certainly held no affection for Daemon, but that was how their lives would be from then on. Now, he had a kingdom to rule and did not exactly need the affection of those people, who were already destined to spend the rest of their lives in that place.
In a way, they were the symbol that his revenge had finally been completed. The last Lannisters.
When he returned to Winterfell with his two dragons and Odahviing, Daemon bid farewell to the latter.
There was nothing more he could do in that world, and Odahviing wished to know it better now that there was nothing left to accomplish. Daemon did not stop him, as long as he did not cause any truly serious problems.
There was no reason to deny that request.
Odahviing said his farewell before departing toward the east. He said he would return once his curiosity about that world had been satisfied, even if it took years.
Knowing very well what that dovah was capable of, Daemon knew there was nothing in that world that could stop him.
After all, not even the heat of the ruins of Valyria would be enough to so much as tickle Odahviing as he explored their depths. The mountains of the west would not stop him either, nor the diseases of Sothoryos or the extreme cold of the still unexplored Lands of Always Winter, of which Daemon had seen only a small part when he fought the Night King.
Daemon himself was deeply curious about those places. As king, he could not explore them personally, at least not until he passed the crown on to one of his descendants, in this case, his son Aegon. Even so, he would certainly have an excellent source of firsthand accounts through Odahviing.
In any case, he reunited with his wife, his son, and his other three lovers.
He spent about a moon in Winterfell, and at last, a royal ship approached White Harbor.
After bidding farewell to House Stark, the royal family departed.
In the end, Arya remained in Winterfell, but Bran traveled south with them, being taken to King's Landing.
Ygritte, Lucis, Val, and the others also boarded the ship.
Lafy would continue serving as Daemon's squire. He still had much to learn, and a position like that would bring him great prestige in the future. Daemon believed he could build a name for himself, and when the time was right, he would grant him a piece of land so that he could found his own noble House.
Mance and Dalla also traveled to King's Landing. Stannis preferred to remain in Winterfell for a while longer. He later took his wife and daughter back to the Stormlands. His daughter was recovering very well and was already becoming a little beauty, with black hair and blue eyes like any Baratheon. Now that the greyscale scars had disappeared, her skin was finally beginning to look healthy again. Though Stannis remained stern, he held Daemon in high regard. His daughter always thanked him for helping her, and even her grim-faced mother showed gratitude toward Daemon.
Meanwhile, Jon had to lead the dragons south, while the king decided with his wife that they would travel on just one dragon.
Daenerys carried Aegon directly in her arms. Daemon used several spells to protect his son during the flight. That way, there would be no problem transporting him on the dragons, and Daenerys also kept him warm and comfortable throughout the entire journey atop Viridrax.
In the end, everything was over.
Westeros had finally returned to normal.
The men returned to their homes, and the king finally departed to rule the kingdom alongside his family in King's Landing.
