Hearing Lily's question, Charles didn't reply. He simply stroked her furry head, then pushed open the door to the Bat Inn and headed for his own room.
Clearly, this was not a question he could answer. This place itself defies logic; even if humans want to scrape by, it's impossible. To live with dignity, one must find the entrance to the Earth's surface. Once that's found, all problems will be solved.
Charles sat down on the soft sofa, his tense nerves finally relaxing. With the warmth of the fire, he slipped into deep sleep.
He didn't know how much time had passed; Charles was startled awake by a nightmare.
He realized that Linda was standing by his side, waiting. Checking his pocket watch, he saw four hours had passed.
"Mr. Charles, this lady came here two hours ago. I wanted to wake you, but she wouldn't let me," said Lily, standing by the window and gazing out.
