Inside the safe house of the Governor's Mansion on He Fang Island, Margaret clasped her hands to her chest. Her body trembled with each successive cannon blast echoing from the docks.
Her father and brother were fighting out there, and every explosion felt as if it could be bursting directly over them.
"What can I do? What can I possibly do right now to help them?" Margaret was so anxious she was on the verge of tears.
Her mother, Karita, sat beside her, gripped her daughter's hand, and pulled her down to sit.
"Don't worry. Your father can handle this. We have to trust him—he's one of the greatest Governors He Fang Island has ever seen."
"Mother, why is the Governor of British Island attacking us?"
Karita sighed softly. "That's for the men to worry about. How could we know?"
As the two women waited anxiously, the cannon fire outside slowly died down.
Accompanied by servants, Margaret and her mother finally left the safe house and returned to the opulent Governor's Mansion.
