This sound was different from the previous whispers; it exploded in his ears like firecrackers—piercingly loud, followed by a raging ringing.
Charles bit down hard on his molars, covering his aching ears with his hands and gritting through the pain.
The bandaged man at his side supported Charles's body with both hands, his moss-green lips opening and closing as if he were trying to speak.
But Charles couldn't hear a thing. His ears were filled again with that furious, roaring voice.

Charles felt a terrifying, scorched scent fill the air around him. The stabbing pain in his ears only grew worse as his blood began to race, forcing his mouth open to take harsh, rattling breaths.
