At this point, Charles's voice took on a hint of excitement again. "But if nothing's going on up on the surface, we could go back to modern society, and by then—"
Charles's daydream was mercilessly interrupted by Anna. "We'll talk about 'by then' when it comes. For now, let's get your eyes fixed. Seeing you like this breaks my heart."
Charles felt two palm-sized boxes being shoved into his hands. "What's inside?"
"Open one and feel for yourself."
Charles opened a box and stuck his hand inside, immediately touching something soft with many legs. The creature inside spun around quickly.
The next second, Charles felt a sharp pain in his finger. He'd been bitten. "Is this a spider?"
"Did you forget your old flame's eyes? If she can use them, then so can you. I went all the way to Icha Island and stole two for you. Icha Island, seriously, who came up with such a dumb name?"
In Charles's mind, an image of Elizabeth's eyes—black sclera and red pupils—flashed.
