The sharp, slender chef's knife was gripped in Plank's palm as he skillfully sliced the slightly shriveled tomatoes on the cutting board.
Although Plank's hands were busy chopping, his eyes were fixed on the assistant chef washing greens nearby.
"Angus, just wash them once and hurry up. The men are about to head to the mess hall for dinner."
"Plank, why is it all vegetarian today?"
"We've been at sea for so many days that this stuff is about to go bad. If we don't eat it now, it'll go to waste. Of course we have to cook it first. Now hurry, hurry."
The kitchen was located directly above the turbine room, which provided all the heat needed for cooking. While convenient and energy-efficient, this setup had one major downside: the turbine room was blazing hot, and the kitchen wasn't much better.
