Six-year-old Miao Guihua lay on the bed, her head dizzy. She was extremely hungry.
At first, she wailed from hunger, begging her mother to find food. After two days, however, she no longer had the strength to cry. With her eyes glowing green from starvation, her mind could focus on only one thing: finding something to eat.
Although there were people in the city, her mother had carried her all over, money in hand, but couldn't find a single scrap of food. Hearing that there was Guanyin clay to eat outside the city, Miao Guihua went with her mother, but there were too many people digging by the river. The two of them, a mother and daughter, couldn't push their way through the crowd. They ended up digging up some grass roots, but soon, even those were gone. There were grass roots elsewhere, of course, but by then, they were too weak from starvation to walk that far.
