Chapter 22 - I'll go on a date with you

The intro opens with a haunting scale from Rayelle then kicks off hard with hard steady drums from Marty, a firm base from Adam, and a synthesized orchestra from Lisa. As the first verse begins, everything cuts off except a steady rock beat from Rayelle. Halfway through the first verse, the drums pick back up, as well as the bass guitar. (Verse 1)You're just a shadow on my tailSilver flash cutting through the hailThey said your call sign like a curseScreamed your name through the headset firstWe met over maps and cigarette ashTwo uniforms, same burn, same crashTrading scars in a borrowed roomKissing like we might not see June (YEAH!)

Rayelle's vocals pick up in tone and volume with her final scream at the end of the first verse.

(Chorus)Enemy in the skyBut your hand on my spineFelt like homeWe were crossing every lineEvery borderEvery code we'd been shownIf the world had to divide usWe would steal a little peace in the fireEnemy in the skyYou were still the one I desired

(Verse 2)We learned each other's language in the darkEvery whispered secret, every markTracing lifelines on your wristLike I could redraw the plot we missedEngines humming somewhere far belowFlares of orange through the window glowWe timed our hearts to the distant blastPromised if it came, we'd choose us at last

(Chorus)Enemy in the skyBut your hand on my spineFelt like homeWe were crossing every lineEvery borderEvery code we'd been shownIf the world had to divide usWe would steal a little peace in the fireEnemy in the skyYou were still the one I desired

(Bridge)Set me up on the wireAnd then stay down in the choirAnd the two of us, aces on the boardDead us both to do by swordClouds like curtains we climbed throughI saw your wings, I knew it was youYou fired wide, I did the sameBoth of us shaking inside the frameYou broke formation, pulled their aimTook every flare, every shot of flameYour last words crackling in the stormFly home, fly home, be reborn(Oh no!)

(Chorus)Enemy in the skyNow it's just my shadow on the glassThey salute me when I flySay I turned the tideSay I held fastIf the world had to divide usYou were always gonna stand in the fireEnemy in the skyYou became my shield my pyre

As the song completes, every instrument cuts off except for a lonely piano and Rayelle's soft, melancholic voice.

(Outro)They call me hero when I landMedal's cold, heavy in my handBut when I close my eyes at nightI'm still your wingman in the light

Once the song completes, everyone sits in silence contemplating what they just heard.

The silence is interrupted by Amy sniffeling and then hastily saying, "Ahem, I wasn't crying, just had a runny nose."

Rayelle grinned and said, "Nobody said you were, but come on, isn't it amazing? Don't you think it deserves a music video?"

Amy nodded, then added, "I think it is a great song for a music video and an album, but how are you going to play it in a concert? It has two guitar tracks and a bass track during the chorus. I can see you pulling off the simpler guitar track and singing, but you're short a guitarist during the chorus. What will you do?"

Adam noticed Rayelle had an idea form in her head and interrupted her before it came out, "Dirk doesn't play guitar."

"Huh? How'd you know I was thinking about him?"

"I've known you since we were kids. When you find a new toy, you play with it until you get bored with it or it breaks," Adam bluntly said.

"Dirk isn't a toy! And I wasn't thinking about him, I was thinking about asking him if he knew a guitarist. You heard them cover Fire Bomber, if their guitarist is just as good as Dirk and his two friends, I think they'd be perfect."

Adam couldn't disagree but still countered, "That would still be up to their guitarist that we've never met. We never even confirmed if they had one either."

"Oh, that's easy enough!" Rayelle pulled out her communicator and quickly sent Dirk a message, "Hey, we need a collab, how is your guitarist?"

After she sent the message, Rayelle folded up her communicator and proudly said, "Done!"

Back on Macross 8, Dirk was busy fighting for his life.

Helena's voice barked, "Come on! Push! You got this!"

Dirk struggled to lift the weight on his second bench press rep. After feeling like he would bust, he finally managed to lift the weight and get it back on the bar.

Helena looked at Dirk with a disappointed look and said, "Ok, looks like your max is 205. That's 20 pounds less than your max from a little over a year ago. Looks like you've been slacking off."

"Damn it..." Dirk stood up and shook out his arms, then said, "Alright, let's see where you are at."

Helena added a five-pound plate to each side and then straddled the bench. "215, ten pounds more than my previous max. Ready to spot me?"

Dirk walked behind her and held his hands under the bar, then helped her get it into position. He watched Helena breathe in, and the bar slowly descended towards her chest.

Dirk encouraged Helena, "Good! Push it up!"

Helena's muscles extended, and with some effort, she raised the bar completely up. She took two quick breaths, then took a long, deep breath as the bar lowered again towards her chest.

Dirk encouraged her again, "Great! Keep going! You got this!"

Helena pushed as hard as she could, her chest strained, and the vein in her forehead started to protrude.

Unfortunately, the bar stopped halfway back up, and Helena started to struggle.

Dirk braced himself to grab the bar if it started to fall and he encouraged Helena more, "Come on! Push! Push! Push!"

Helena dug deeper into herself and willed every muscle in her body to push as hard as possible. Her face started to turn red, and the bar slowly began to rise again. Helena gave one hard push to every single muscle she could think of using.

BORTT

Helena released a quick, loud fart that helped propel the bar, and she raised it back to the resting position to complete her set.

Dirk quickly helped Helena put the bar down while she quickly found the energy to leave the gym with her face still bright red.

Dirk stood there for a second and noticed that a lot of the other people in the gym were smiling while looking in Dirk's direction. He stood there proudly with a fist up and declared, "Me! It was me!" Dirk then looked around for a bottle of disinfectant and a towel, and quickly cleaned the bench before chasing after Helena.

Dirk found Helena sitting on a plastic bench just outside the gym with a water bottle in one hand. He sat down next to her and said, "So, looks like you set a new personal best?"

"I swear that's never happened before!"

Dirk looked confused, "What? You've never broken a personal best before?"

"No! I mean, yes, I'm always trying to do better every day..." Helena sighed. What was she getting nervous about? Farting in the gym happened a lot, it was perfectly normal. She smiled and added, "Thanks for spotting me... and even taking credit for the other thing."

Dirk stated proudly, "Hey, anytime you need a spot or someone to take credit for a fart, I'm your man."

Helena laughed at the ridiculousness of Dirk's offer.

Dirk was surprised to see Helena laugh. She was normally extremely serious about everything, but he had to admit he didn't know her very well. Most of the time, Dirk would try to annoy her to get out of training, so he never really got to know her very well.

"You're actually really pretty when you laugh," Dirk said absent-mindedly.

Helena's face lit up even redder than before, and for once, she was at a loss for words. She looked up at Dirk with a genuine smile.

Dirk realized what he said and became flustered as well, "Ummm, I hope you can help keep me motivated working out. I realized that even though we will hopefully never see a fight, we should be ready for one."

Helena didn't quite trust Dirk's words, but knew it was a good start, "That's a good start... So, how about this as motivation, if you bench more than me, I'll go on a date with you."
