THE KING'S SHADOW
Before steel could meet steel, a thunderous voice echoed through the chamber
"His Majesty, the King!"
The doors at the far end of the court were thrown open with force, the sound reverberating like a warning across the marble hall. Every man froze. Swords hovered mid-air, breaths were caught in their throats. Even the defiant soldiers who had stormed the court faltered.
Then, as if seized by a single will, they dropped to their knees as the king entered. He did not rush, each step was a deliberate assertion of power that required no proclamation. Draped in dark royal robes, he carried neither weapon nor visible guard, yet none dared mistake his presence for vulnerability.
Silence followed him like a shadow.
The judge bowed so low his forehead nearly touched the floor. "Your Majesty…"He had crawled to the front of the chair he had hidden behind. The Third Prince stiffened, lowering his head, though tension still burned in his jaw.Yuma Nzaki followed suit, his earlier confidence becoming quiet.
Only one figure remained standing the general. Her Highness did not kneel.A murmur stirred, quickly swallowed by fear. The king stopped at the center of the court.
For a long moment, he said nothing.
His gaze swept across the room over the trembling officials, the armed soldiers, the prince, the minister before settling on her.
"Is this," he finally said, his voice calm yet suffocating, "what my court has become?"
No one answered.
The weight of his words pressed down harder than any blade. His eyes shifted slightly."To bring armed men into a royal hearing…" he continued, "is not an act of loyalty."The soldiers lowered their heads further, their grip on their weapons loosening."It is an act of war."
A ripple of fear moved through them. The king's gaze returned to the general."And yet," he said, quieter now, "they came for you." Her Highness met his eyes without flinching."They acted without my command," she said. "But not without cause."The court held its breath. The king studied her, searching not for fear, but for something deeper.
"Then you will command them now," he said.Without turning, without raising her voice, she spoke, "Stand down."The words cut clean through the tension. One by one, the soldiers lowered their swords. Then, slowly, they withdrew stepping back, retreating toward the doors they had so violently entered.
Order, finally began to return. The king did not lose her gaze."Let it be known," he said, his voice carrying across the hall, "this court will proceed."The judge swallowed hard and straightened, though his hands still trembled. "Yes, Your Majesty. The hearing… will continue."
The king turned slightly, taking his place upon the elevated seat reserved for him.
"Proceed," he commanded.
And in that single word, the fate of everyone in the room grew heavier.
