Unsure if it was despair for his future or lingering sorrow for little Suliya's death, Pyle had fresh tear stains on his face; he had clearly cried again after the interrogation.

"It's clear you really cared about Suliya."

Dean took out a cigarette and tossed it in front of Pyle. "Actually, I understand. Everyone has the right to like someone; it's just that the person you chose is... rather special."

Pyle looked up, surprised and suspicious. Seeing the sincerity on Dean's face, his lips quivered, words caught in his throat.

Dean continued, "I saw self-blame, distress, and regret in your eyes... That's why I decided to see you again, Pyle. I have good news and bad news. Which do you want to hear first?"

"The good news, I guess," Pyle said indifferently.
