Chapter 29 - He Held Her While She Cried

The dam burst. She didn't just cry; she exploded. It was a wail of pure, unadulterated despair. Years of writing tragedy, months of running, weeks of fear, and days without her medication, it all crashed down on her at once.

She knocked the water glass away. It fell to the rug with a dull thud. She buried her face in her hands, her shoulders shaking so hard it looked like she was having a seizure. She cried like a child who realizes the dark is never going away.

Alexander watched her, his own breath catching in his throat. He felt helpless. Useless.

"Gazelle..." he whispered. "Don't. Please don't."

She couldn't stop. She was gasping, hyperventilating, the pain in her heart merging with the pain in her mind.

Alexander moved on instinct. An instinct he didn't know he possessed. An instinct he hadn't been written with.

He reached out. He didn't hesitate this time. He pulled her up from the cushions and wrapped his arms around her.

It was awkward at first. He was stiff, terrified of breaking her further. But as she collapsed against him, burying her face in the crook of his neck, soaking his stolen T-shirt with her tears, something in him unlocked.

He held her tightly. Desperately.

One of his hands came up to cradle the back of her head, his fingers tangling in her damp hair, pressing her ear against his chest so she could hear the steady, frantic thrum of his heartbeat, proof that she was alive, that he was real. His other hand moved to her back, rubbing slow, soothing circles over the velvet cloak, feeling the shuddering of her spine.

"Shh," Alexander murmured into her hair. He rocked her slightly, back and forth. "I've got you. You're not alone. I'm here."

Gazelle didn't pull away. She was too weak, too lost in the storm. She clung to him, gripping the fabric of his shirt, anchoring herself to the only solid thing in her universe. She didn't care that he was the villain. She didn't care that he was the Prince. Right now, he was just warmth. He was just a heartbeat in the void.

They stayed like that for a long time. The only sounds in the room were Gazelle's fading sobs and the relentless rain outside.

Slowly, the tension left her body. Her breathing evened out, hitching every few seconds in the aftershocks of weeping. Her grip on his shirt loosened.

She had fallen asleep. Exhaustion had finally claimed her, right there in the arms of the man she had once dreamed of being heartless.

Alexander didn't move. He hardly dared to breathe. He held her weight against him, feeling the warmth of her body seeping into his own cold skin.

Carefully, with a tenderness that would have shocked his father and perhaps even Raven, he maneuvered her back onto the couch. He laid her down, tucking the blankets around her chin.

He sat back on his heels, watching her.

A profound, terrifying anxiety gripped him. He had never cared if something lived or died before, not really. People were assets or liabilities. But looking at her, seeing the dried tear tracks on her face, seeing the way her eyelashes fluttered in sleep, he felt a surge of protectiveness so strong it made him feel physically ill.

He reached out, his fingers hovering over her face. He brushed a stray strand of hair away from her forehead.

Then, he leaned in closer.

He inhaled deeply, his nose brushing against her hair. The scent of her, rain, old paper, fear, and something sweet like vanilla filled his lungs. He held his breath for a few seconds, closing his eyes, wanting to keep that scent inside him forever. It was the only thing that had ever filled the hollowness.

"I thought I was a monster," Alexander whispered to her sleeping form, his voice trembling. "But somehow I am immune to you."

He sat on the floor beside the couch, pulling his knees to his chest, and resumed his vigil. He would not sleep. Not tonight.

*

The sound of the key in the lock broke the silence an hour later.

Alexander stiffened, his head snapping toward the door. He didn't stand up. He stayed close to Gazelle, his body angled to shield her.

The door opened.

Raven stepped in first, shaking the rain from his coat. He looked exhausted, his eyes dark and alert. Dante followed him, carrying the bags of supplies.

But there was a third person.

Alexander's eyes narrowed as he saw the woman enter. She was soaking wet, shivering, clutching a cardigan around herself. Her neck was bruised, a thin line of dried blood visible on her throat. She looked traumatized, but her jaw was set in a line of grim determination.

Alice.

Raven looked at Alexander, then immediately at Gazelle sleeping on the couch. He saw the blanket tucked carefully around her. He saw the way Alexander was sitting, like a guard dog at the feet of its mistress.

Raven's eyes narrowed, but he saw that she was safe.

"We have company," Dante announced grimly, dropping the bags on the table. He looked at Alice, his expression a mix of guilt and anger. "Alexander, meet the neighbor. She... decided to join the revolution. Or rather, the revolution found her."

Alice didn't speak. She looked at Alexander sitting on the floor by the couch. She saw the protective way he sat. She saw the dried tears on the sleeping girl's face.

And she understood. She recognized the look in Alexander's eyes because she felt the exact same thing for the man standing next to her.

"Hello," Alice whispered, her voice hoarse.

Alexander looked at Raven. "You brought a civilian?"

"She saved our lives," Raven said shortly, walking over to check the window locks. "And she knows too much. We couldn't leave her."

Raven walked over to the couch, crouching down beside Alexander. He looked at Gazelle, checking her breathing. Then he looked at him. He saw the shift in the atmosphere. He saw the exhaustion in Alexander's eyes and the lingering fear.

Raven didn't say anything. He just nodded, a silent, grudging acknowledgement of the watchman's duty.

"Get some rest. All of you." Raven said.

Outside, the city slept, but in the apartment, four broken stories and one sleeping creator waited for the day that would change everything.
