CHAPTER 100
Class-A had an unexpected visitor to their dorms today, and their presence gave an uncomfortable shift. Not exactly anything that raised alerts to danger, like a villain, but the kind of discomfort coupled with teenage anxiety, and navigation of social interactions with a person who refused to have any positive charge towards you. And in this case, it was the entirety of class A.
Neito Monoma walked through the common room doors, smiling with a cocky gleam in his eyes.
"Good afternoon, Class A!" he announced, spreading his arms wide. "I have a question for you all!"
The room went quiet, as everyone looked at Monoma, wondering what kind of chaos he would attempt to bring into their space now. They had no hostility, regardless of how he behaved towards them, but it was admittedly a little reassuring to have someone like Kendo with him to hit the silence button at the back of his neck when he got too rowdy. They were just worried that he might strain himself.
"What's up, Monoma?" asked Eijiro.
"How much thought," Monoma said, his smile growing somehow wider, "have you put into Shinso's impending transfer?"
Heads turned, the question might have been carried with a casual tone, but it was falling on them like a pile of bricks. The teachers had mentioned that Hitoshi would certainly be joining the hero course next year. They were looking forward to having a new ally, but at the same time, they had also gotten into a skiff with class B about where he would be placed. Now Monoma appears to have thought this was the perfect time to kick up that dust.
"Shinso? No one knows which class he'll join," Hanta said.
"I wouldn't mind having the dude in Class A," Added Eijiro. "He's strong, with lots of ambition."
"Oh, is that all?" Monoma's voice climbed an octave,"If that's all you have to say, then you're lagging far behind Class B!"
Because, of course, Monoma couldn't appear without having some kind of insidious intent toward their class. It was as if he signed a binding contract. He reached into his jacket and pulled out a rolled paper, unfurling it. It was a blueprint, a very detailed, annotated, color-coded blueprint of a room.
"Behold!" Monoma declared. "A spruced-up room for Shinso! We're ready to welcome him into our dorm building at any time!" He tapped the paper with one finger. "I take it you've done nothing of the sort?"
The blueprint showed off the features of the room, including a soundproof booth for Hitoshi to train in, a self-installed bookshelf with a collection of books on battle tactics that would help him. And there was still room for his own furniture if he ever moved in.
Sakura was just relaxing on the sofa, trying to get through her book, but the commotion could be heard from every space. And when she heard Monoma mention her friend and his preparation to bring him into the fold of class B, she chose to stay quiet and observe. Neito Monoma's antics did nothing to her, and she knew none of her classmates were interested in drawing confrontations from his goading. However, it appeared that for once, Monoma was receiving his desired reaction, as her classmates looked both impressed and somewhat disdainful. Sakura knew her classmates were smart, but that usually extended to their textbooks and hero training. In other instances, they were naive to the point of it being laughable. Like believing that they had committed some sort of sin by not preparing a room for Hitoshi, who wasn't even promised to their class. And yet they looked mortified at the thought of being inconsiderate.
More silence.
"That shows the extent of your feelings on the matter, Class A!" Monoma laughed sharply, throwing his head back. "Shinso is destined to join Class B! We cannot wait for his arrival!"
He turned on his heel and swept out of the room, his laughter echoing down the hallway.
The moment he was gone, Sakura looked around at the boys' faces. Troubled and contemplative, which is likely to lead to unnecessary events.
Sakura pinched the bridge of her nose. "You're not actually taking this seriously. Are you?"
"I hate to admit it," Eijiro said slowly, his fists vibrating at his sides, "but seeing Class B pull out all the stops like that, Class Rep... makes me think we're losing to them in the passion department."
Sakura slapped her forehead with enough force to make an audible sound. "Oh my god. Seriously. Stop right here." She looked around at their earnest, concerned faces. "I'm going to remind you all that Hitoshi isn't transferring until next year."
"But that's not too far off!" Eijiro protested, "And Class B's already prepared to have him!"
"Gotta let Shinso know we're ready for him to join our pack!" Denki agreed, holding his chin between his thumb and index finger.
"We're a class, not a pack of wolves!" Tenya said with is signature hand chop. He pushed up his glasses, "I agree, though, we must take action!"
Sakura sighed, slapping her book shut and moving from the sofa. "Speaking of which, I'm going out with Hitoshi soon. Gotta get ready."
"Huh?" Multiple voices were overlapping.
"You're going somewhere together?" Ochaco asked carefully.
"Yeah." Sakura grabbed her jacket from where she'd left it draped over a chair. "He's taking me to the mall."
Someone made a sound like a small animal being stepped on.
"You're going on a date?" Mina's voice climbed to frequencies that probably bothered dogs. "After Todoroki asked you out? Isn't that kind of cold?"
"I'm going to the mall," she said, enunciating each word with deliberate precision, "to get presents. For Christmas. With Hitoshi. As friends."
"Oh," several people said.
"Really," Sakura continued, heading for the door,
..
..
..
With December's end closing in, Sakura realized that she needed to get ready for her first Christmas; specifically, she wanted to make this first holiday experience a great one for Eri. And when she looked it up online, and found out the tradition of the tinsel, the tree, decorations, foods, and for the kids, the presents, Sakura had made a list that Shouta insisted she cut in half because it was overkill. Sakura had taken to watching a couple of videos to look for a tutorial on how to celebrate Christmas and make it memorable for children. Eri especially had a right to a great first Christmas experience.
The kind of experience that a seven-year-old girl should've rightfully had all along, if the world had been even remotely fair.
"You okay?"
Hitoshi's voice called her back to the present. They were standing at the bus stop, waiting for their ride into the city. He was watching her with that particular expression of his.
"Oh, yeah." Sakura waved a hand dismissively. "Just my classmates driving me up a wall again."
"I'm surprised you lasted this long before needing an escape."
"Well." She shrugged. "Turns out living with them 24/7 has limits on my patience I didn't know existed."
The bus arrived. They climbed aboard, found seats near the back, and settled in for the twenty-minute ride.
ride.
"It's been a while since it was just the two of us, huh?" Sakura said, watching the buildings blur past the window.
"I know." Shinso pulled out his phone, scrolling through what looked like a shopping list. "But Aizawa-sensei said we shouldn't waste any time. His exact words were 'get in, get what you need, get out, don't cause an incident.'"
"If anything goes wrong, just blame me," Sakura offered. "He'll believe it no matter what."
"Noted."
..
..
..
While there was still some time before Christmas, and the holidays were still a little way from them, the entire building was flooded with retail chaos. Sakura stared at the decorations, the giant tree in the middle with presents, and a kids' play area that had been set up labelled Santa's village. She must've been watching it intensely enough for Hitoshi to poke fun, asking if she wanted to ride the train around Santa's village. Or take a picture with the stuffed reindeer and slay display.
"Ha,ha," Sakura huffed, hands on her hips.
They stepped off the escalator onto the main floor, and Shinso consulted his list again.
"Aizawa wants me to pick up some specific supplies while we're here," he explained. "There's a hero equipment store on the second floor. What about your stuff?"
"I need to get some things for Eri," Sakura said. "Clothing first."
When Eri first landed in Sakura's palm, she was light as a feather, and not because Chisaki chose to starve her, but because she did to herself, unable to handle the stress of her situation. It had affected her growth as well, but now at UA. Eri received weekly health checks and a balanced diet, rectifying that damage, and it was starting to show. As she already outgrown a few of her clothes.
"Toy store after that?"
"Yes. But also accessories, she likes games and coloring, so I wanted to get art supplies. And shoes, she needs new shoes, the ones she has are starting to-.
"Are you planning on buying her half the mall?" Shinso interrupted, eyebrows raised. But sincerely impressed by the thought she gave to Eri.
Sakura pulled a face. "This is going to be her first Christmas. You're supposed to get gifts, right? That's the whole point?"
"Is it true you've never celebrated it before? Christmas?"
"I haven't even heard of it until now," Sakura confessed, tugging at her hair in front of her face.
"How is that even possible?"
"It's just the way things were for me. We didn't really celebrate holidays. Or things like that."
"What kind of sticks were you from?"
Sakura rolled her eyes. "Let's just take our time, okay? Besides, this is the first time in a while I've been let out of school grounds without someone breathing down my neck."
"Gee, wonder why," Shinso said dryly. "How's the ankle monitor doing?"
"Don't even go there."
The two started making their way through the crowd, but didn't get very far before someone called out to them.
"Excuse me!"
They both turned to find a man approaching them. He wore a mall employee uniform, crisp and neat, name tag reading "Tenko Tejina" above the words "Customer Support."
"Looking for something?" he asked, that smile never wavering. "Allow me to assist you."
Hitoshi decided it was easier than navigating the mall themselves, and not to quote Aizawa, waste time, handed over the pieces of paper with their combined shopping list.
"Please do."
Tejina's eyes scanned the lists. "Why, of course! I can show you exactly where to find these items." He gestured for them to follow. "Would you happen to be students, by any chance? Our mall features a cafe that's ideal for studying, highly recommended. We also have an exclusive hero costume and items exhibit," he said, gesturing to the store where a few costumes and props stood at the window.
"Hero costumes, neat," said Hitoshi
"Yes, our manager's brilliant idea."
"Tejina!" Another employee called from across the store, standing beside an impressive tower of boxes. "Get these up to the fourth floor for me, please!"
"Of course!" Tejina's smile never faltered as he changed direction, leaving Sakura and Hitoshi standing there watching him approach the boxes.
The tower was unstable. At least fifteen boxes are stacked. Tejina bent his knees and lifted.
"Tejina, when you're done with that, can you restock the shelves in Electronics?" yet another employee called out.
"Absolutely!" came the cheerful response, despite the fact that his knees were already trembling under the weight.
They watched him struggle toward the service elevator, that smile still plastered on his face.
Then an elderly man appeared from a nearby store, laden with shopping bags that hung from both arms.
Tejina, still carrying the tower of boxes, diverted course to help.
"Ensuring customer well-being is the employee's duty!" he announced, and somehow managed to take several of the old man's bags while balancing his own cargo.
"This guy's gonna hurt himself," Sakura muttered.
"Yep,"
Unfortunately, Tejina's enthusiasm exceeded the structural integrity of his box tower. The top began to wobble, then tilt, then commit fully to the concept of gravity.
Sakura caught three boxes before they could brain the elderly customer. Hitoshi grabbed two more. They both looked at each other with the weary expression of people who'd just become involuntarily involved in someone else's crisis.
"Maybe, we should just help."
Sakura sighed. "We're supposed to be shopping."
"Yeah, but Aizawa also said, 'Don't cause an incident.' Pretty sure letting a mall employee get crushed by merchandise counts as an incident."
"...Fair point."
The two ended up helping the poor man perform all his errands, not because they'd planned to spend their afternoon being unpaid mall labor.
"This is also part of a hero's civic duty."Sakura knew he was just saying that to tick her off.
But she also wasn't one to let someone in need suffer. Besides, she felt a little sorry for Tejina with his strained smile, his impossible workload, and the way he kept thanking them after every single task.
When they finally finished, the fourth floor restocked, the electronics section organized, and the elderly customer's bags delivered to his car, Tejina bowed heavily to the two.
"I cannot thank you enough for helping me! You are truly saints!"
"We're just students here to shop," Sakura said, uncomfortable with the intensity of his gratitude.
"I apologize for imposing on you both." He straightened, "I will now shave my head to show my appreciation-
"No!" Sakura held out her hands, giving a crooked smile. "Thank you, but that's really not necessary!"
"You can just help us out like normal," Hitoshi added quickly, trying not to look alarmed. But Tejina just shook his head, a bead of sweat on his cheeks. "No, no, no, I'm afraid I must work harder to earn trust than anyone."
The two exchanged questioning looks, but Sakura leaned forward. "Maybe you can help the rest of our classmates find what they're looking for."
"Huh?"
Sakura gestured over her back, "Oh, Izuku, Hanta, and Tenya are all here too. Thought you noticed."
Clearly, he hadn't.
"If they were coming here anyway, why didn't you just go with them?" Sakura decided to hold onto the fact that they were actually following the two of them for a while before they scattered around.
"Because I wanted to come here with you, and besides, they went off in their own directions."
Hitoshi turned his attention back to the mall employee, "Anyway, why is earning trust so hard for you?"
He pointed to a display shelf of ornaments in one of the stores across from them. "See that bunny over there?"
They saw the little glass trinket and nodded. One moment it was standing on the shelf, and without taking their eyes off, it was gone. The man held out his palm where the item now sat, "Look here. My conjure quirk can target any small object and warp it straight into my hand. "
But since my quirk could easily be used to steal, most employers aren't willing to hire me."
The way he said it sounded resigned, like he'd explained this a thousand times before. This made Hitoshi's chest tighten.
"I've tried." Tejina's hands clenched at his sides. "I've tried so many places. Restaurants, retail stores, warehouses. Every interview goes the same way. They see my quirk demonstration, and their faces change. They start making excuses. 'We'll call you.' 'We need someone with more experience.' 'The position's been filled.'" His smile returned, but it was brittle. "This mall hired me anyway. The manager said everyone deserves a chance. So I'm constantly trying to prove I'm a loyal, hardworking guy who can be trusted. That I won't-that I'd never-"
He couldn't finish the sentence.
"Your quirk is holding you back," Sakura said, if not a little tacky.
"Yeah. But this mall gave me a shot. That's more than most places. So I work twice as hard, take on every task, and never complain. Because if I mess up, if I give them even one reason to doubt me..." He trailed off, but the implication was clear.
Sakura gave Hitoshi a knowing look, and he flicked her forehead in response.
..
..
..
Tejina ended up guiding them through their shopping, efficiently saving them time. He knew shortcuts between stores, which cashiers moved fastest, which displays to avoid if you didn't want to be ambushed by overeager salespeople.
Sakura collected gifts for Eri, everything she believed to make the perfect Christmas list. While Hitoshi was simply focused on getting whatever it was Aizawa had asked him for.
Which was why Sakura gave him an odd look when they ended up in the toy store, and he made a beeline for the cat section.
"Why are you getting that?" she asked, watching him examine a plush calico cat with an unnaturally large head.
"Aizawa-sensei asked for it," Shinso said, as if it were completely normal. "You know he likes cats."
Sakura reached past him and pulled an even fluffier cat plush off the shelf, this one orange and absolutely ridiculous, with a squished face and paws the size of its body. She held it out to Hitoshi with a completely straight face.
"What, you want one too?"
"Ha ha." Hitoshi gave a small smile while pushing her hand away. "Hilarious."
"I thought so."
Tejina, hovering nearby, clasped his hands together. "Is there anything else I can help you two with finding?"
Sakura held up her bags, now numerous. "Well, we knocked off everything we needed, so I guess now we can just head for something to eat."
"Shouldn't we get back to school?""It's fine."
Sakura kicked out her ankle where the monitor was still secured, a thin band that blinked with a small red light every few seconds. "I have this, so it's not like they're going to lose track of us."
"When are they going to take that thing off? When you graduate?"
Sakura stuck out her tongue. "I could always break it, but what would be the point? Then they'd just put on a worse one."
"Would you like me to show you to the café?" Tejina offered. "It's a great spot for teens. Very popular for dates."
"We're not dating," Hitoshi said.
Sakura's grin turned wicked. "Come on, one date won't kill you. And we kind of have been-
"No, we haven't."
"What do you call it when a girl and a boy hang out together alone, then?"
Shinso pulled his scarf up higher over his face, but his cheeks were visibly warming beneath it. "You're doing this on purpose."
"Of course." Sakura shrugged, adjusting her bags. "By that logic, I've been dating a few people this year. It's apparently very easy to accidentally date someone in this world."
"Please stop talking."
They were making their way toward the café when they noticed a crowd gathering near the hero exhibit they'd passed earlier. There was some anxious energy around them.
Tejina diverted course, approaching one of the mall security guards. "Excuse me, what happened?"
The guard sighed heavily. "Someone stole from the hero exhibit. One of the costume pieces. Some hero fanboy realized there was a forgery on display, called it in." He gestured vaguely at the growing crowd. "Nobody suspicious was spotted, but the swap must've happened at some point today."
"Some hero fanboy?" Sakura murmured, and something about that phrasing tickled her memory. Why did that sound familiar?
But then she noticed Tejina trembling beside her.
"Uh oh." His voice had gone small. "They'll accuse me for sure. I'll be the number one suspect given my quirk."
"Except you didn't do it," Hitoshi said, and while his face maintained its usual monotone, there was genuine sincerity in his voice. "Just be upfront and honest about it."
"You were with us the whole time," Sakura added. "We can vouch for you."
"Nope, I'm screwed!" Tejina's professional facade shattered. "They'll never believe me! Why would they? I have the perfect quirk for this kind of theft! I'm—I'm—"
He bolted into the crowd, running off, carrying his worries with him.
Sakura crossed her arms. "What do you want to do?"
Hiotshi didn't miss a beat. "I want to help him."
"Alright, let's go." Hitoshi realized that Sakura had somehow already caught onto a lead, as she pointed to one of the security guards that were making his way through the mall, carrying a bag that they noticed was being adjusted rather heavily.
..
..
..
Sakura and Hitoshi walked around the mall, blending into the crowds with the other shoppers. Except they were looking to catch a sale on a criminal plot. Following a good for paces behind the security guard, close enough that they could see his back, but far enough that he wouldn't notice them watching if he turned around.
Eventually, they stopped behind a wall to watch him, but rounding the corner in the same direction was none other than Izuku, Hanta, and Tenya.
"Shinso! Sakura!" Izuku exclaimed
"Yeah, it's us," Sakura said quickly, holding up a hand to stall whatever questions.
"We're hunting down the thief who stole from the exhibit," Hitoshi added, his eyes never leaving the security guard who was now pausing.
"So are we!" exclaimed Izuku. "Someone stole All Might's mask,"
After following around Sakura and Hiotshi to gather information on what their potential future classmate would like. They eventually gathered a few things, but instead of leaving, Izuku got distracted by the hero costumes and items exhibit, causing a detour and delay. He was looking at All Might's April fools masks behind the display, but his keen eye caught something off about the details, being the dedicated fan that he was.
Sakura gestured to the security guard, "That guy's been walking around with a wary expression, and see the way he's been shifting that bad on him. I'm sure he has something to hide."
"A security guard would indeed have an easy time getting away with a crime," agreed Tenya.
The security guard took out his cellphone. Hanta pointed out that this might have to do with his job, but Sakura and Hitoshi didn't take their eyes away, deciphering his words.
"Got the items, heading your way. Start the car and be ready."
"Did you overhear the conversation?" asked Tenya
"No, we just read his lips,"
"We can be fairly certain he's guilty then," Tenya said, "And that he's got an accomplice."
They followed at a greater distance now as the guard moved into the parking garage. The crowds thinned here, and there was more acoustics and open space to see people moving.
A car pulled out from a parking space, the driver stopping in front of the security guard to peer out at him.
"Got the goods?"
"Alright, so how are we gonna do this?" asked Hanta.
"Make sure the car doesn't leave," Tenya said.
"And make sure to knock them out before they can use their quirks. We don't know what we're dealing with." Midoriay instructed.
Sakura held out her hand, signaling for everyone to hold position. They watched as the security guard approached the car, opened his bag, and pulled out All Might's mask, giving them the confirmation they needed to take action.
"Now!" Sakura called. Hanta, Izuku, and Tenya ran out from their hiding spots behind parked cars.
The three made their positions known, and the two thieves attempted to escape. The security guard jumped into the car before the tires were squealing as it sped off towards the exit. Hanta didn't let it get that far, though. Tape shot out in multiple directions, creating a web across the garage exit that the car couldn't break through without getting tangled. The driver slammed on the brakes, realized they were trapped, and threw the car into reverse.
Tenya was already moving, his Recipro Burst blurring him across the parking lot. He got ahead of the reversing car, forcing it to swerve. The momentum was too much, causing the car to spin, and both occupants had to abandon it or risk crashing.
But that's when it was over. The fake security guard saw Tenya coming, but he didn't see Hitoshi, who took him down, using his martial arts to land him on his face in a lock with one arm trapped under his knee.
Izuku launched himself at the driver, who was trying to make a run for it with the mask. The guard threw the mask upward in desperation, trying to use it as a distraction. Izuku sent a Delaware Smash Air Force that caught the man in the chest, sending him flying backward.
"Where's the mask?!" Hanta called out.
"That guy won't give it up!" Tenya shouted/
The driver, propelled by Izuku's attack, flew through the air. And landed directly in front of a very startled Tejina, who'd been sulking through the mall, probably wondering how he was going to find another job.
The mask landed right in his hands, and the criminal delivered right at his feet.
The mall security team arrived seconds later, drawn by the commotion. They saw Tejina standing over an unconscious thief, holding the stolen All Might mask, while five teenagers watched from the parking lot.
"We should probably get out of here before someone asks for statements," Hitoshi murmured.
"Probably," Sakura agreed.
On the bus ride back to school, Hanta joked about how it was too bad they didn't get to take any credit for catching the thieves, including the one they left tied up in the parking lot. But Sakura pointed out, it would've given Aizawa a reason to lecture them.
..
..
..
Sakura waved off Shinso at the bus stop, watching him head toward the training grounds where Aizawa was waiting.
Then she turned back to walk with Hanta, Izuku, and Tenya, all three of whom were carrying suspiciously large bags.
"So," Sakura said casually, "what were you guys getting at the mall?"
The three looked at each other, their eyes mimicking excitement. They held up their packages with matching expressions of pride."Something for Shinso," Izuku said.
"Oh boy," Sakura muttered.
..
..
Unfortunately, it seemed that Monoma's visit had left a lasting impression that had brought the boys together to try and prepare a room for Hitoshi, despite Sakura's reminders that he wouldn't be in the same curriculum until next year, and the same class was still up for debate. That didn't stop them from dragging Hitoshi from his training with Shouta and bringing him to the dorms. While Hitoshi looked at Sakura for an explanation, she had just come as an impartial observer.
What am I here to see?" Hitoshi asked, looking directly at Sakura as he was pushed along the hallways of Class A's dorm building. He noticed the way her lips curved, showing she had a secret sealed behind them.
"Your room," Tenya announced , "for when you transfer into Class A."
Eijirou opened the door and revealed a space, covered in cats. The curtains featured a repeating pattern of sleeping kittens. There were cat plushies arranged on the bed, at least a dozen of them, ranging. Cat-themed posters covered the walls. A large stuffed cat that was approximately the size of a small child sat in the corner.
"The perfect oasis for your gloomy self!"
Sakura covered her mouth as she tried to hold back her laughter, but her shoulders shook with obvious amusement.
"A room with a big-eyed kitty theme!" Denki exclaimed. "You love it, right?"
Hitoshi was speechless, like he literally didn't know what he was going to say about this. He just stood in the doorway staring.
Sakura couldn't hold it anymore and burst out laughing. "It actually-" she gasped between laughs, "it actually suits you really well, doesn't it?"
"You knew about this?"
"Only after they'd already bought everything!" Sakura said, wiping her face, "I saw the bags at the mall, but I didn't know what was in them!"
"Who said you could mess with the empty room?"
Everyone froze. Shouta stood at the end of the hallway, his capture weapon hanging loose around his shoulders, like he was ready to strangle all of them with it.
"We didn't get permission first?" Tenya's gastped. His hand started chopping frantically through the air. "Oh no! Oh no! This is a severe breach of protocol! We should have filed a request form!"
"You're all expelled," Aizawa said flatly.
"WE'RE SORRY!"
Sakura and Hitoshi looked at each other.
"Is it always like this?"
"Most days. But now you know what you signed up for, hero."
