Charlie stared down at the child in his arms.

His granddaughter.

Renesmee Cullen.

The name itself had taken him a few moments to process.

A granddaughter.

Bella's daughter.

His granddaughter.

The realization still felt unreal.

Renesmee looked back at him with those unnaturally intelligent eyes, her tiny hand still wrapped around one of his fingers.

Charlie found himself smiling despite everything.

Then reality returned.

His smile faded. He looked up.

"Okay."

The room immediately became quieter.

Charlie's eyes moved from Edward to Carlisle, then to Esme, Edythe, Alice, Rosalie, Jasper, and finally Jojo.

"Where's Bella?"

Nobody answered immediately.

The hesitation lasted less than three seconds.

But for Charlie—It was enough.

Years of police work had taught him how to read people.

The exchanged glances.

The tension.

The silence.

The way everyone seemed to be waiting for somebody else to speak first.

Something was wrong. Very wrong.

Charlie slowly stood up while carefully holding Renesmee.

"What happened?"

No answer.

His stomach tightened.

"What happened to my daughter?"

Edward lowered his eyes.

Carlisle sighed quietly.

Rosalie folded her arms.

Even Emmett looked unusually serious.

The entire room suddenly felt uncomfortable.

Charlie noticed every bit of it.

And that scared him more than anything he had witnessed in the forest.

Because these people clearly knew something.

A lot of somethings.

Then his gaze landed on Jojo.

The only person in the room who wasn't avoiding eye contact.

Jojo rubbed the bridge of his nose.

Then pointed toward a nearby couch.

"Charlie."

The sheriff looked at him.

"Sit down."

That sentence alone made Charlie's heart skip.

Nobody says sit down before good news.

Slowly, Charlie lowered himself onto the couch while still holding Renesmee.

The child remained strangely calm throughout all of this.

Watching.

Observing.

Almost as if she understood the tension in the room.

Everyone else gathered nearby.

Nobody spoke.

The silence stretched.

"...."

"...."

"...."

Charlie looked around once more.

The more he looked—The worse it felt.

Eventually he exhaled. A long breath.

Then nodded.

-Nod!

"Okay."

His voice was calm. Too calm.

The voice of a sheriff preparing for bad news.

"Something's definitely going on."

Nobody argued.

Because he was right.

Charlie glanced toward the staircase.

Toward the upper floors.

Then back at Jojo.

"Is Bella alive?"

The question landed heavily.

Edward's head snapped upward immediately.

"Yes."

The answer came so fast it almost sounded desperate.

Charlie visibly relaxed.

Only slightly.

But enough.

At least she was alive.

Then he frowned.

-Frown!

"Then why is everyone acting like somebody died?"

That question earned several uncomfortable expressions.

Jojo leaned back slightly.

Trying to figure out where exactly to begin.

Because explaining vampires to an ordinary human wasn't exactly a conversation guide available at bookstores.

Normally this secret would never be revealed.

The consequences could be severe.

The Volturi had enforced that rule for centuries.

But things had changed.

Jojo had entered the picture.

And after everything Charlie had already witnessed tonight—

A flaming skeleton.

A monster stitched from human bodies.

A Russian madman dragged screaming into Hell.

The vampire revelation no longer seemed like the craziest part of his evening.

Charlie noticed the hesitation.

Again.

His eyes narrowed.

Then a realization struck him.

Not the truth.

But close.

Very close.

He slowly looked toward Edward.

Then toward Carlisle.

Then toward the rest of the Cullens.

Everyone beautiful.

Everyone pale.

Everyone unnaturally still.

The same details he had ignored for years.

His expression began changing.

Slowly.

Suspiciously.

"Oh no."

Nobody spoke.

Charlie's eyes widened.

"Oh no."

Jojo sighed seeing Charlie's brain seems to be working over time.

-Sigh!

Charlie pointed at the entire Cullen family.

"You people are weird."

Emmett immediately started laughing.

Rosalie buried her face in one hand.

Alice outright lost control and started giggling.

Even Carlisle looked defeated.

Charlie pointed harder.

"No, seriously."

He looked at Jojo.

"Tell me I'm wrong."

Jojo remained silent for a second.

"...."

Charlie stared.

Jojo continued remaining silent.

The sheriff slowly leaned back into the couch.

His eyes moved between every member of the Cullen family.

Then toward Renesmee.

Then back again.

A horrible realization was beginning to form.

And judging by everyone else's faces—He was getting warmer.

The room remained quiet for several minutes after Charlie's initial shock.

Nobody rushed him.

Nobody pressured him.

Frankly, after witnessing a flaming skeleton drag a monster into Hell, learning that the Cullens weren't exactly normal humans wasn't even the strangest thing he'd encountered that night.

Still—

It was a lot.

A very large lot.

Charlie sat on the couch with Renesmee resting peacefully in his arms while everyone else remained nearby.

The sheriff rubbed his forehead slowly.

Then looked at Jojo.

"Start from the beginning."

Jojo nodded.

"Fair enough."

The room settled.

Even Emmett stopped joking.

Jojo leaned forward slightly.

"The Cullens are what most people would call vampires."

Charlie immediately tensed.

His arms instinctively tightened around Renesmee.

Several Cullens visibly winced at the word.

Jojo noticed.

"They're not exactly the same as the stories."

Charlie's eyes moved toward Carlisle.

The doctor gave him a small nod.

Jojo continued.

"They're what's known as Cold Ones."

The sheriff looked confused.

"They're immortal beings. Faster than humans. Stronger than humans. They stop aging once transformed."

Charlie listened carefully.

Years of police work had taught him when people were joking.

Nobody here was joking.

"Their natural food source is human blood."

That statement immediately brought tension back into the room.

Charlie slowly looked around.

For the first time, he noticed how still everyone sat.

How nobody seemed to breathe.

How none of them shifted from discomfort or fatigue.

The details he had ignored for years suddenly stood out.

Jojo raised a hand.

"Before you panic, listen to the rest."

Charlie remained silent.

"They don't hunt humans."

The sheriff looked back toward him.

"They're vegetarians."

That earned an immediate look of disbelief.

"Vegetarian vampires."

Emmett coughed.

"It sounds stupid when you say it like that."

Rosalie kicked his shin.

Hard.

Charlie ignored the interruption.

"What does that mean?"

Carlisle answered this time.

"It means we survive on animal blood."

His voice remained calm and professional.

"Not human blood."

Charlie studied him carefully.

Looking for deception.

Finding none.

Carlisle had the same steady expression he'd always had.

The same expression Charlie had trusted whenever Bella needed medical help.

Eventually Charlie nodded slightly.

Not fully convinced.

But listening.

Jojo continued.

"Another thing you need to understand is mates."

That immediately drew Charlie's attention.

The sheriff looked around the room.

Jojo pointed casually.

"Carlisle and Esme."

Esme smiled softly.

Carlisle reached over and squeezed her hand.

"They're mates."

Charlie nodded.

That one made sense.

Then Jojo pointed again.

"Emmett and Jess."

Jess smiled while Emmett wrapped an arm around her shoulders.

Charlie nodded again.

Still normal.

Then—

"Jasper and Edythe."

The two exchanged a glance.

Another nod.

Then Jojo pointed toward Edward.

"And Bella is Edward's mate."

Edward's expression softened immediately at Bella's name.

Charlie noticed.

Then Jojo finished.

"And Alice and Rosalie are my mates."

The room became quiet.

Charlie blinked. Once. Twice.

Then he looked at Alice. Then Rosalie.

"...."

Then Jojo. Then Alice again.

Then Rosalie. Then Jojo.

"...What?"

Alice immediately burst out laughing.

Rosalie smirked seeing his reaction.

Jojo looked entirely unbothered.

Charlie stared still processing the words.

"I'm sorry."

He pointed at Jojo.

"You have two?"

"Yes."

Charlie pointed at Alice.

"You're okay with that?"

Alice nodded cheerfully.

"Very."

Charlie pointed at Rosalie.

"And you're okay with that?"

Rosalie folded her arms.

"I'd kill anyone else."

Charlie slowly lowered his hand.

"Right."

He wasn't touching that subject anymore.

Not tonight. Not ever.

Seeing the sheriff's increasingly confused expression, Carlisle decided to explain.

"A mate bond is different from ordinary attraction."

Charlie's attention shifted toward him.

Carlisle spoke carefully.

"For our kind, it's something absolute."

The room grew quieter.

"When a mate bond forms, that person becomes the center of your world."

Charlie listened intently.

Carlisle continued.

"Love is part of it. Loyalty is part of it. But it goes deeper than either."

Edward's gaze unconsciously drifted toward the upper floor where Bella remained.

Everyone noticed.

Nobody commented.

"A bonded pair would do almost anything for each other," Carlisle explained.

"The connection doesn't weaken over time."

Charlie slowly absorbed the information.

It explained things.

A lot of things.

Edward's obsession with Bella.

The lengths everyone had gone to protect her.

Even the strange loyalty the family showed one another.

Finally Charlie looked down at Renesmee sleeping peacefully in his arms.

Then toward the stairs.

Toward Bella.

His daughter.

The daughter who had somehow married an immortal predator.

Given birth to an impossibly intelligent child.

And apparently become part of a family of vegetarian vampires.

Charlie sat there quietly for several seconds.

Then sighed heavily.

A long, exhausted sigh.

"I leave town for five minutes."

The room immediately broke into laughter.

Even Charlie found himself smiling.

Because honestly—

What else could he do at this point?

The universe had clearly stopped asking his permission before making things complicated.
