Chapter 32 - The Array Pavilion’s Prodigy

The eastern thoroughfare leading toward Array Pavilion Peak was distinctly different from the rest of the inner sect.

Where the approaches to Rising Sun Peak and Grand Forge Peak were marked by the sound of ringing steel, roaring kilns, and bellowing battle cries, the paths climbing the slopes of Array Pavilion Peak were filled with a profound, rhythmic hum. Vast geometric diagrams and interlocking silver runes were etched directly into the sheer stone faces of the cliffs. In the open courtyards flanking the road, disciples in deep navy robes walked with brass astrolabes, runic compasses, and bundles of jade formation flags, engaged in quiet, intense debates over spiritual conductivity and spatial geometry.

Above the mountain's main terraces, several massive, ring-shaped formation plates floated silently in midair, slowly rotating as they filtered and stabilized the ambient heaven-and-earth Qi flowing across the peaks.

Tai Bàoli walked up the broad stone stairway, his hands resting easily within his wide grey sleeves. His towering six-foot-four build and striking blood-red eyes drew curious glances from the scholars and formation masters passing by, but Tai paid them no mind. His perception, sharpened by his breakthrough into the Palace Creation realm and his unyielding Dao Heart, effortlessly picked up the subtle spiritual currents running beneath the flagstones.

*Every inch of this mountain is woven into a single, colossal formation,* Tai Bàoli noted with quiet admiration. *To maintain something of this scale requires terrifying mathematical precision.*

Reaching the central terrace, Tai Bàoli stopped before a grand, open-air pavilion known as the Thousand Runes Plaza. A large crowd of outer and inner disciples was gathered around the sunken testing grounds at the center of the terrace, murmuring in excited, hushed tones.

"Is she really attempting to calibrate a Low Earth Rank Spirit Convergence Array on her own?"

"She only entered the inner sect six months ago! Most disciples spend three full years mastering the foundational ninety-six Mortal Rank diagrams before their masters even let them touch an Earth-grade node!"

"Hush, watch her hands! Her comprehension is frightening—Elder Song personally commended her runic resonance last week."

Hearing the murmurs, Tai Bàoli's crimson eyes brightened. He gently eased his way through the outer ring of onlookers until he had a clear view of the sunken arena below.

At the center of a sixty-foot circular diagram inlaid with polished spirit jade stood Liu Yanjiang.

She had changed over the last six months, yet remained unmistakably herself. Standing at five-foot-one, her glossy jet-black hair was pulled back into her familiar tight, no-nonsense bun, framing sharp features and striking, bright golden eyes that burned with intense focus. Instead of her old heavy, padded laborer-style garments, she wore a well-fitted navy-and-gold Array Pavilion inner disciple tunic over dark trousers, with her trusty short sword still strapped horizontally across her lower back.

Surrounding her on the arena floor were twelve large spirit-crystal pillars, each vibrating erratically as turbulent crimson and azure Qi flared along the runic channels. The formation was on the verge of collapsing into a violent spiritual backlash, yet Liu Yanjiang's expression remained as calm as a mountain pool.

*Whoosh!*

In the blink of an eye, Liu Yanjiang moved.

Her footwork was blindingly fast, leaving faint crimson afterimages in her wake—the unmistakable grace of her peak-mastery *Bloody Dragon Steps*. Slipping through the surging waves of distorted Qi without a speck of dust touching her hem, she retrieved three silver-tipped formation flags from her spatial ring in a fluid blur.

*Clang! Clang! Clang!*

With pinpoint accuracy, she drove the flags into three critical intersection points on the floor. Her delicate hands flashed through half a dozen complex mudras in the span of a single breath, her golden eyes tracing the invisible spiritual lines of the array with terrifying speed.

"Earth as the pivot, water as the guide, suppress!" she commanded softly.

A crisp chime echoed across the plaza as a wave of pure, crystalline blue light swept through the runic diagram. The unstable crimson flames were instantly tamed, flowing smoothly into the central node. The twelve pillars ceased their shaking, settling into a harmonious, gentle hum as the entire Low Earth Rank formation locked into absolute equilibrium.

The supervising elder standing at the edge of the platform stroked his beard, his eyes shining with open astonishment. "Node stability at ninety-eight percent. Calibration complete. Splendid work, Disciple Liu."

The surrounding crowd erupted into applause and praise.

Down on the platform, Liu Yanjiang let out a long breath, wiping a thin bead of sweat from her forehead with the back of her sleeve. She offered a polite, respectful bow to the elder, collected her formation flags, and turned toward the stairs to leave.

As she looked up, her golden eyes scanned the crowd—and froze.

Standing near the front of the spectator railing was a broad-shouldered young man in simple grey robes, his long black hair catching the mountain breeze, watching her with a warm, genuine grin.

Liu Yanjiang's eyes widened, and a brilliant smile broke across her face.

"Tai Bàoli!" she called out, abandoning her scholarly composure as she darted up the stone steps with rapid, agile strides.

"Hey, Liu Yanjiang," Tai Bàoli greeted her warmly as she reached the top terrace. "It looks like you've become quite the famous figure around here."

Liu Yanjiang stopped in front of him, planting her hands on her hips and looking up at his towering frame. "Look who's talking! When was the last time you stepped off Crouching Tiger Peak? People were whispering that you had vanished into thin air after the outer sect tournament!"

"I was busy," Tai Bàoli chuckled, scratching the back of his neck. "My master keeps a tight schedule. But watching you just now\... your formation mastery has reached an absurd level. You stabilized an Earth Rank array without breaking a sweat."

"It took three months of trial and error just to understand the foundational equations," Liu Yanjiang admitted, though her golden eyes shone with pride. "My peak master, Elder Song, has been dumping ancient formation manuals on my desk every single morning. If I didn't practice my sword forms and movement arts every evening, my brain would have turned to mush."

She paused, tilting her head as she took a closer look at him.

Her sharp perception, honed by months of tracing microscopic spiritual lines, immediately picked up on the profound transformation in Tai Bàoli's presence. Six months ago, Tai had been an explosive, terrifying engine of raw physical might—a roaring fire that threatened to burst out of its skin. But now, as he stood before her, his aura was as deep and immovable as a mountain range. The faint, rhythmic pulse of his Qi carried an overwhelming density, like a fortress built of eternal iron.

Liu Yanjiang's jaw dropped slightly. "Wait... Tai Bàoli, your cultivation... you're in the Palace Creation realm?!"

Tai Bàoli smiled modestly and nodded. "I broke through a few days ago."

"A few days ago?!" Liu Yanjiang whispered in shock, leaning in closer so the surrounding disciples wouldn't overhear. "You entered the inner sect in the Pulse Condensation stage! In just six months, you bypassed Marrow Tempering and Dao Condensing entirely and formed your Dao Palace? How on earth did you build a foundation that quickly?"

"I didn't bypass anything," Tai Bàoli explained honestly, his tone steady and calm. "Great Elder Yi had me spend every single day studying cultivation theory, meditating, and tempering my intent. He took me to the Tiger's Reflection Abyss to forge my Dao Heart before I even touched a breakthrough pill. I spent six months doing nothing but training, sweeping the courtyards, and solidifying my foundation until the breakthrough happened naturally."

Liu Yanjiang stared at him for a long moment, her shock gradually giving way to deep respect. "The Tiger's Reflection Abyss... I've read about that place in the pavilion's historical archives. It's an ancient trial ground filled with lingering intent from the sect's founding ancestors. Most inner disciples can't endure ten minutes inside without their minds breaking from the pressure."

"It was definitely intense," Tai Bàoli said with a faint grin. "It forced me to figure out why I cultivate in the first place."

"And what did you find?" Liu Yanjiang asked curiously, her golden eyes searching his blood-red ones.

Tai Bàoli's expression grew quietly resolute. "An unyielding heart. No matter how heavy the mountain or how terrifying the beast, I will never bow, and I will never break."

Liu Yanjiang felt a faint shiver run down her spine at the sheer weight behind his words. She could feel that his conviction wasn't just empty arrogance; it was an iron truth etched into his very soul.

"An unyielding Dao... it suits you," she said softly, a genuine smile returning to her face. "In array mastery, we seek the absolute harmony of heaven and earth. Formations teach you that every turbulent storm has an underlying structure—if you understand the lines of truth, you can redirect any force in the world. Your path is to stand immovable against the storm; mine is to dismantle the storm before it hits."

"Sounds like we make a pretty good team," Tai Bàoli chuckled.

"Of course we do!" Liu Yanjiang grinned, giving his arm a playful punch. Her knuckles met his dense, tempered muscle with a dull *thud*, and she immediately shook her hand with a wince. "Ow! What are you made of, refined iron? Even your casual posture feels like armor."

"Sorry," Tai Bàoli laughed. "I haven't had much practice controlling my weight around people lately."

"Come on," Liu Yanjiang said, gesturing toward the wide stone pathway leading down toward the central market district. "You owe me lunch for vanishing for half a year. There's a spirit-beast restaurant near the trade plaza that serves roast thunder-boar ribs. We can catch up properly there."

"Lead the way," Tai Bàoli agreed readily. "Master Yi actually told me to get off the mountain and spend time with other disciples today anyway."

"Good. While we eat, you can tell me what other trouble you managed to get into on Crouching Tiger Peak," Liu Yanjiang said as they walked side by side down the mountain path. "And after that, maybe we can look at the mission board together. The Mission Pavilion just posted a series of joint exploration tasks for the ancient ruins in the Cloud-Mist Basin—they require both combat vanguards and formation masters."

Tai Bàoli smiled, feeling a familiar surge of anticipation in his chest. "Sounds like a plan."
